Watch the tapes for games 4, 6,7. Several no calls that favored the pens. In game 4 offsides wasn't called. That led to a goal. Missed penalties in game 6. In game 7 no icing that led to first goal. No penalty when crosby hit someone and injured himself. Thank gary bettman for that cup. I just pray he does NOT do the same for the caps this year.

That's a great fan base. Even this year when they were in 1st place all season and had the leading goal scorer all year, they were worse than half the league in attendance. So tell me how I'm "just wrong altogether."
You can't say that the fan base in Washington is good but the fan base in Pittsburgh is full of bandwagoners. It's either both or neither. Both teams had rough years, with poor attendance. They are both now solid teams and have very much improved their attendance.
Any team's number will drop a little during bad years, but the Pens sold out prior to Sid's rookie year, and they were terrible that season. They sold out the next year anyway, and they sold out last year after losing in the 1st round of the playoffs. The Caps were 28th in attendance in OV's sophomore year, and 17th the year after they made the playoffs. Neither have fans like Montreal or anything, but I think I have a fair argument that Caps fans don't compare to Pens fans.
Yeah, Bettman had Ovechkin in Washington where the fan base is god awful, and Crosby in Pittsburgh where the arena had a consecutive sell-out streak that dates back before this past season. But Bettman had a meeting with the refs, and told them that Crosby was sexier and that they should make sure the Pens go all the way because it would improve the NHL's income if he wins.

Oh wait...they had the last TWO powerplays in both games 6 and 7 to try and tie it up, and had fewer PIM over the series. He must have stopped their offense somehow.

MalkinFan25...Wings used to be like the Yankees but with a new salary-cap era, you can't buy cups. I'm a Wings fan, loved the series, not the result. Just remember the injuries to the Wings really helped the Pens. Last year, no injuries. This year: Lidstrom, Rafalski, Ericsson, Lilja, Kopecky, Datsyuk and Draper. With a healthy Wings squad, the outcome could've been in the Wings favor. But Pens got the boost from the Guerin trade and Gonchar healthy. Next year will be interesting for both teams!

Yes, injuries did play a role in this series, and in the season. We were very fortunate that Gonchar came back for us even though he has been banged up all year. It may have been a different series had all the wings been healthy... who knows. Good luck next year!

When you try and embarass your opponent it always haunts you later. If you look at the Carolina Edmonton series when oilers were down 3-1 they won 2 games in a row but game 6 they embarassed them and won 4-0 and the hurricanes came out stronger in game 7 and won.

the fact in the nhl today is that nothing is for sure. it is possible for both teams to hit rock bottom next year. The nhl salery cap is going down and players are still demanding high salerys. More likely than not it will be the same matchup for the cup next year. both teams have high power offenses and killer defenses. evrery game this year was close with exeption to game 5.
nbenton152, for sure ANYTHING can happen in the NHL these days. I mean the Pens were staring down 10th place and we were hoping to just make the playoffs in Jan. (granted, half our team was injured then), and even though players are demanding higher salaries, the desire to win has not changed, and we have seen players like Guerin, Adams, Fedotenko, and McKee take significant paycuts to stay or go to the Pens.
Both teams will be great, they are both solid, and they should have a good run again.

Yeah the refs did ruin it. Like when Zetterberg closed his hand on the puck in the crease twice, and the interference the Wings got away with so badly that even the terrible NBC announcers noticed. Or when the Wings got nearly twice as many PPs in the series than the Pens did.
Both teams had to overcome calls. That's why they play a 7 game series, and not one. In a 7 game series, the team that overcomes the calls will win. And the Pens did. The Red Wings did not.

As a wings fan, there's nothing I, or anyone else can say to take this away from the Pens, cuz bottom line, they did what they had to do as a team. There wont be an * next to their names on the cup. With that being said, were they the better team? No. Should they send one hell of a fruit basket to the teams that injured our star players earlier in the playoffs? Yes. Watch the tapes for games 4, 6,7. Several no calls that favored the pens. In game 4 offsides wasn't called. That led to a goal. Missed penalties in game 6. In game 7 no icing that led to first goal. No penalty when crosby hit someone and injured himself. Thank gary bettman for that cup. I just pray he does NOT do the same for the caps this year.

Any team's number will drop a little during bad years, but the Pens sold out prior to Sid's rookie year, and they were terrible that season. They sold out the next year anyway, and they sold out last year after losing in the 1st round of the playoffs. The Caps were 28th in attendance in OV's sophomore year, and 17th the year after they made the playoffs. Neither have fans like Montreal or anything, but I think I have a fair argument that Caps fans don't compare to Pens fans.

Yeah, Bettman had Ovechkin in Washington where the fan base is god awful, and Crosby in Pittsburgh where the arena had a consecutive sell-out streak that dates back before this past season. But Bettman had a meeting with the refs, and told them that Crosby was sexier and that they should make sure the Pens go all the way because it would improve the NHL's income if he wins.

Just remember the injuries to the Wings really helped the Pens. Last year, no injuries. This year: Lidstrom, Rafalski, Ericsson, Lilja, Kopecky, Datsyuk and Draper. With a healthy Wings squad, the outcome could've been in the Wings favor. But Pens got the boost from the Guerin trade and Gonchar healthy. Next year will be interesting for both teams!

When you try and embarass your opponent it always haunts you later. If you look at the Carolina Edmonton series when oilers were down 3-1 they won 2 games in a row but game 6 they embarassed them and won 4-0 and the hurricanes came out stronger in game 7 and won.

The Red Wings are much like the Yankees as an organization (historically). They are usually always good, they'll are expected and usually make the playoffs, and succeed. The Wings are a phenomenal power in the NHL
The Penguins are kind of like a stock market. We hit rock bottom in 84 and got Lemieux. We hit Rock bottom in '03 and got Crosby, Geno, Fluery...
Both organizations have great historic value. Both orgs. produce in different ways and both will be good next season. Leave it at that...

That's pretty unfounded... What makes you think the Pens will hit rock bottom next year? Is it the fact that we were Eastern conference champions 2 years in a row? That we have had 2/3 leading scorers in the NHL during the regular season AND the playoffs? Or is it the fact that we are bringing back just about all of our offense back from last year?

the fact in the nhl today is that nothing is for sure. it is possible for both teams to hit rock bottom next year. The nhl salery cap is going down and players are still demanding high salerys. More likely than not it will be the same matchup for the cup next year. both teams have high power offenses and killer defenses. evrery game this year was close with exeption to game 5.

nbenton152, for sure ANYTHING can happen in the NHL these days. I mean the Pens were staring down 10th place and we were hoping to just make the playoffs in Jan. (granted, half our team was injured then), and even though players are demanding higher salaries, the desire to win has not changed, and we have seen players like Guerin, Adams, Fedotenko, and McKee take significant paycuts to stay or go to the Pens.
Both teams will be great, they are both solid, and they should have a good run again.

What an awful game. But it took this game for the Pens to get refocused and pull it together for the final stretch. What an amazing recovery by Fleury.
I think it's pretty awesome that Sykora told Fleury after he was pulled not to worry, that he would still win this series. Like the goal Sykie called in game 5 last year. He should get a crystal ball and tell hockey fortunes as "the man who knows" :)

this was detroit's highlight game after games 1 and 2 that were littered with goals provided by the backboards of the joe....fact is that after games 1 and 2, the Pens resiliency and speed proved to be simply too much for the Wings.

Yeah the refs did ruin it. Like when Zetterberg closed his hand on the puck in the crease twice, and the interference the Wings got away with so badly that even the terrible NBC announcers noticed. Or when the Wings got nearly twice as many PPs in the series than the Pens did.
Both teams had to overcome calls. That's why they play a 7 game series, and not one. In a 7 game series, the team that overcomes the calls will win. And the Pens did. The Red Wings did not.
