fantastic! so glad I stumbled across this. will be great to use with my class - for identifying separate woodwind instruments and linking reading music to this video. simply shows high/low sounds + instruments. really great thanks
@MusicFreak31296 Thanks! OK, I just uploaded another score (link at the bottom of the video description) that should have the clarinet transposed correctly, if I did it right...
I looked at the score and I saw that Clarinet, Flute, and Oboe were all set in the same key, when Clarinet should be in a different key because it's a Bflat instrument while flute and oboe are C instruments. I was playing a few measures on clarinet with a flute and it sounded a little off. Will it sound better with the whole blend or was this a mistake/typo?
@MusicFreak31296 In notation, I write all my music as if every instrument was a C instrument ... perhaps a bad practice, but it makes composing a lot easier ... and when I made the PDF score, I never changed it back ... I guess I should? I'll see if I can find the original notation file...
That was awsome! The instruments blended perfectly, so not one was left in the background the whole time (I play the oboe, so I know what it feels like). The video was also great, and so creative. Keep up the good work!
@teerifikc Thanks! I don't have a .mus file for it, unfortunately, since I used Overture to write it... I might have a MIDI though somewhere, in the vast mess of my hard drive :-)
Hi Sean, I'm in the midst of writing my own quartet.. problem is.. I don't know anything about them! I'm familiar with different compositional techniques (canonic, counterpoint, etc.) though I'm completely unaware as to whether or not there is any type of traditional structure behind the building of a piece such as this one, is there any chance you could give me some frame of reference? perhaps point me towards some sort of literature that might?
As with just about all my pieces, I don't follow any set structure. Of course, just like when writing a melody, a structure will naturally form itself as I write, but I don't give it much conscious consideration. Classically, I guess all my pieces would be considered "fantasias" ... following no rules of any strict musical forms.
I bet there are plenty of books on musical forms, but I haven't read any. I'm much more interested in orchestration and melody. I think today's audiences for this kind of music don't expect certain forms anyway, so we're quite free to let the music go wherever we please... a freedom I very much enjoy...
Its really cool I Think I'm going to play it with my friends. the Bassoon part is pretty boring and so is the clarinet but the flute and oboe parts and very cool.
Yeah, sorry for the boring bassoon and clarinet parts ... I think they provide a good foundation for the flute and oboe, but they are pretty boring parts ... actually the bass instruments in many of my pieces are pretty boring :-/
Yeah your right. Its a good bass part but I still think that it would have been better if there was more of a moldic line at the begining when they are so exposed. I really like when the eighthnotes happen on thier parts. Its a very nice piece. Your also right about bass parts being boring. As a clarinet player I don't usually get boring parts. Except when I play with the orchestra!
Thanks! I happened to come across this video because I wrote wind quartets as well, which seems to not be very common compared to a wind quintet. I really like this program as well, but I haven't used it to make a video yet!
Wow, this is amazing!! It'sI play the flute for my school's concert band, and my best friend who sits behind me (wierd seating order) is a bassoonist, and our best friend is a clarinet!! Now if only the oboe didn't hate us...!!
wow, i absolutely adore this song! i am an oboe player and friends with several all-state players. is there any way you would let us play this piece for a contest?? i could supply you with a video of us playing it.
I have sheet music for this on my site, linked to in the description... though I might have forgotten to transpose the clarinet. Argh, transposing instruments!!
F Flat? That WOULD be torture, I dont know if it even exists! .... Unless you mean F major, then the poor clarinets would have to make up new sharps to keep consitstant with the other keys!
Wizzerd this is so nice the clarinet the babby basson and the oboe and the flute sounds amazing. Did you and your friends make this? Brw,i play the oboe and clarinet but im advanced in oboe :-D
Really great piece! the beginning is a bit weak due to the bassoon (I think that's the English word) sounding so obviously machinemade, but as soon as the more high pitched instruments join in you forget all about the un-living sound of the bassoon. It just sounds happy, nice and great :-D
I was planning on convincing the quintet I'm in, to adapt this to five persons, but then I remembered that I, the tuba, would have to play the lower part :-S
Thanks! ... a "conversation" ... hmmm, I like the comparison! This is definitely more "conversational" and less "direct melody" like most of my pieces.
I'm just curious, WizardWalk, what kind of video games do you play? Your music is very intelectual and intriguing and I think it would be great music for an epic video game like final fantasy or something. Great job!keep it up!
Thanks! I've actually never played the Final Fantasy games, but I do enjoy some of its great music. I haven't played many games lately, but I've enjoyed the Myst games, The Sims, and Shadow of the Colossus... that has some great music too. :-)

And the clarinet part is more fun than the parts in most clarinet/flute/oboe trios I've played in.....I like this, I wish we had a bassoon player :/

WizardWalk 3 years ago
Its only one note up from a C instrument with 2 extr flats / 2 less sharps =|
But forget french horn, I couldn't transpose that if i tried.
Rodier1128 3 years ago
It's actually 2 extra sharps, but yes you write everything a tone higher. Just thank God we don't use clarinets in F flat or something.
