  • thanks alot :D

  • I just discovered your channel and man, that's what I've been looking for! What a great and clear explanation and examples. What's your opinion about the exposure bracketing in such a difficult lighting situation (7:30)? Using GND filter wouldn't help so much as we would have to darken the buildings as well...Btw, your pronunciation is so nice which is a huge advantage for non-english viewers! Thanks!

  • Great videos man, but you say changing the shutter speed and the aperture doe's the same thing, but changing the aperture changes the focus depth doesn't it?

  • @Rollumadur You're right - it does change depth of focus (or field). But in terms of exposure both shutter and aperture let in more or less light. It's why you have to have two exposure controls. If you want lots of DOF you often have to use a slow shutter speed to make up for the small aperture. If you want a fast shutter speed to freeze motion - you might have to use a wide aperture. Hope this helps..

  • Mike,

This is surely, one of the most instructive videos about manually setting exposure ! Not only is it informative, but that trial and error style really underlines its educational value !

And there is also that accent of yours...

    Brilliant !

  • Did you use the same camera throughout this video?? Im just a litlle confused as to why @ 5.09 the exposure metre was -on the left and + on the right. However @ 11.16 + was on the left and - was on the right. Great tut just hoping you might clarify it please.

  • @Sallybunckle Well spotted! I have two D300 bodies and for some reason the light meter on one shows over exposure to the right and the other does it to the left :-/

  • @Sallybunckle I'm not sure about other cameras but with Nikon you can always reverse it in Menu:)

  • This is one of the best "how to " videos i have seen, covering the topic from all angles and not bamboozling newcomers to dslr's like myself.....

What Model camera is your NIKON... ?

Thnaks for the videos there brilliant....

  • @digitaljaffa Thank you - it's kind of you to say so. It's a D300

  • Fantastic tutorial! Within minutes I was taking better photos. My question is, does this also apply to recording video?

  • @Lifeburn1 Yes it does but with video it's more normal to adjust exposure with aperture and by adding / subtracting ND filters. You can still change the shutter speed though but it's not wise to drop it below 50th second because the frames might not be sharp.

  • @Lifeburn1 AGREED. Best I have seen on here. As an ex prof. photographer (film days)I am re-learning my way into the digital world. I think all this info is first rate and dead simple to understand.

  • I have had professional photographers explain manuel settings before, but I do have to say that you gave me confidence in myself to better handle my DSLR. Thank you again for all of your awesome videos. Jeremiah Edwards Oklahoma, USA

  • @jeremiahedwards Thank you :-)

  • Hey thanks for your comments everyone - very much apprieciated.

  • Very good video. Well done.

  • @nate42nd Thank you

  • Great effort in making this tutorial as simple as possible... nice and well done !

  • That's a good explanation.

The only problem with all manual is that you can't work quickly to take a shot where you can't jibber around with exposure etc.

  • @CMampaey Thanks. It's not as quick as auto - but auto sometimes gets it wrong and if you don't know how to do it yourself you don't get the shot. Also you get quicker with practise - which most people don't do. It's a bit like learning to drive a car. For a while it takes up all your concentration to manage gears, steering, not crashing, mirrors, indicators etc - bit of practise and you make it look easy. :-)

  • One of the best explanatuions of shutter speed/apeture/ISO i have come across, well done.

  • Great explanation...

    Thankyou :)

  • HDR tutorial for the 2nd part of the video?

  • What did you do to loose so much wight?!!

  • @oliverhshow Ha Ha - I did the LighterLife diet. Lost 6 stone in four months and been maintaing it for two. It's tough but it works..

  • @photoexposed cool! what do you need to do in your diet?

  • @oliverhshow Hi - you can only eat the food packs given to you by LighterLife, drink water, tea and cofee without milk. I like it because I don't have to think!

  • Very well explained. Great tutorial. Thank you.

  • Excellent video.

  • First rate tutorial thanks so much

  • Very well explained.... nice one...
