@ciphoenix That may be true, but it is well known that veterans make up over 1/3 of the total homeless population. In Nashville area alone since I have lived here, several thousand homeless veterans have lived on the street, in spite of the fact there are several organizations including Operation Stand Down trying to help them. Just because there are laws on the books does not in any way mean that there is not a significant homeless veteran problem that is not being adequately addressed.

I am a Disabled Veteran of OIF/OEF and the Global War on Terror. I was discharged over 30 months ago due to injuries sustained in an accident. I have yet to receive my benefits, or even an explanation as to why I have been denied. I work less than 20 hours a week, suffer from severe sleep depravation/insomnia and get treated like a second class citizen. I'm lucky enough to have parents who can afford to take me, and my fiance who supports me, in.

... who have given soooooo much for my freedom. I don't have much to offer, but I can make sure she has 3 meals a day, a bed to sleep in ... someplace she can call home for however long she needs it. I will try to help her with whatever she needs. Again - not to make myself look good, but it's the right thing to do, the PATRIOTIC thing to do. I challenge anyone else who reads this post to do the same. Imagine if each of us took in just one Vet and/or their family. God Bless!

This is terrible. I had no idea there were so many, much less that there are homeless women veterans. It brings me to tears thinking of these men and women who have served our country for countless years and sacrifices, some totally unimaginable, and this is how they get repayed???? After seeing this, and as a single mother, I promise right here and now, to take in a female veteran for however long she needs it. This is not to make myself look good, but to help the ones ... see next post .

Thank you for your kind response. What a lot of Americans don't realize is that many homeless veterans, as well as other homeless people, suffer from severe sleep deprivation, which makes it very difficult to hold down a steady job, even if they can find one. Women homeless veterans have it particularly hard because most the word "veteran" to most Americans automatically creates a mental male image, thus homeless female veterans remain particularly invisible.

Right again. When I go to VA Hospital (another insult), I get a lot of stares, even from other vets, because I wear a cap that says "Marine Veteran". t hasn't been that long since VA even had facilities to treat us (ccoties!! A vet GIRL!!!!).

I am hoping the new Sec. of Vet Affairs Shinseki will change things around. If I ever figure out how to get his email, he is going to get a real awakening. And I mean that in a nice way, not in a Marine way.

I'm a woman who served in USMC during (but not IN) the VietNam era. If I told you how we get treated when we fall on hard times (become disabled, lose jobs, etc.), you would think I was talking about communists. They always find a way to "lose" your paperwork or deny your claim.

I agree. I've been in the Skid Row area in Los Angeles and homeless veterans are there, I've seen them standing in bread lines in Phoenix, Denver, Prescott, Nashville. They've been there since the Reagan era and those who promulgated the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan sure as hell haven't done anything but made their situation worse. Support the troops my ass!

@richardaberdeen I assume that homeless veterans are sinners and, other homeless people are also sinners. Just as I assume presidents, lawyers, bankers, scientists and wealthy capitalists, as well as you, are sinners. The reason I assume this is because I know I myself am a sinner and, have never met anyone who has ever convinced me they are not a sinner. So what is your point? @Santor6 You seem to have a very twisted sense of reality. A homeless veteran is a human being, the same as any other human being without a home. The reasons why people become soldiers, like the reasons why people become lawyers, carpenters and truck drivers, are complex and have a lot to do with economic opportunity and survival necessity. Your position assumes we are born in a totally equal environment and all have the same opportunities and abilities; you remind me of rightwing Republicans
