  • I wish I had the skills, time, and patience to play this... I am 14, I have none of those.

  • Hi munnyay

The upside is that if you have time and patience, the skills will gradually evolve. To learn an instrument is very much about to be willing to put in the time for practicing. And with transpiration comes inspiration :-)

Keep swinging, or should I say, start swinging,

    Rounder

  • @rounder2u You are very true xD

  • @munnyay You are young, get going and you will learn. Practice and persistence is the main thing and that's what will makes you good. I see you already have the desire so go for it you wont be sorry.

  • is the solo just blues pentatonic in F?

  • Hi jbest

Almost all notes in it, yes.

    Keep swinging,

  • Hi Rounder, excellent job! I love it! I checked out your other version, but I like this one because I like the sound better. I would be grateful if you could take a look at my version. Once again, excellent job!

  • Thank onehandedkeyboardist!

I have noticed (with a bit surprise) that quite a few people still prefer this older recording :-) even though my newer recording is more accurate and closer to the original '62 Booker T take.

The upside with this old one as I see it is that it's easy to see here that Green Onions is totally playable even on a smaller single manual keyboard.

I've just checked out your version and it's nice and wth great feeling!

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • your chords are not exactly correct, and it sounds really, well... really white.

  • Hi gingervytis

You are right about the chords :-)

May I suggest that you check out my newer recording (Jun 22, 2010) of Green Onions? My newer recording of the song is more true to the original compared to this. The chorded chorus, the melody and the bass line are all improved in the newer recording.

I play both the white and the black keys during this song. I didn't knew they sounded different ;-)

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • Is that a hammond organ

  • Hi s695579

No, this is a digital piano. The model is Yamaha P-120.

I just use the 'jazz organ' setting to get a sound a bit closer to a Hammond organ.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • prachtige uitvoering!! grote klasse en beter dan je latere versie. echt super!!!

    Greetz from Europe

    Keep Europe swingende,

    Rounder

  • I can see what keys you're hitting better in this video than in your later version.

    Thanks for uploading!

  • Hi scubanan

Good that there still is some use of this earlier version.

Then you might be interested in using this old version to see the keys, and my later version for the improved accuracy of the melody (as I didn't got some of the grace notes, phrasing, etc, down in this earlier version). The chorded chorus is also 'wrong' here.

You might also be interested in using my later version to get the left hand bass line, as the bass line in this version is simplified.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • Well it wont work so look up Loy Norrix Jazz Band Green Onions and Blues Machine. Im the guy rocking out on keyboard.

  • Hi fopper

I've checked your version out. Nice long groove version work! Great piece to play in a big band too. Keep it up!

  • Cheating by looking at your solo to make up my own improv. Ill put in when da video of the concert is up. Concert on my may 3rd. This 15 year old is ready to jam it out! :)

  • Hi fopper

Good luck, and I'm sure you'll do fine at your concert!

You even still got some time to fine-tune :-)

PS. I believe Booker T. was 17 when he recorded Green Onions way back in '62.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • bloody brilliant. well done

  • Thanks Tcloud!

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • this is epic, i mean absolutly superb! yo even got all 3 grace notes in time XD that takes skill my man

  • Thanks rynn!

May I suggest that you check out my new recording of Green Onions? My new recording of the song is more true to the original compared to this. The chorded chorus, the melody and the bass line are all improved in the new recording.

I have also recorded three slow tempo Green Onions tutorials that you might be interested in checking out.

  • Muy buena rola, creo que trabajare yo tambien un poco en ella, para empezar con algo de Blues.

    Keep swinging,

  • You are very good. Are you familar with the Hammond Concord? If so do you know if I could play this song on it and what drawbar settings are used? Thank you

  • Thanks NorthernSoulKing!

Sure you can play 'onions' on a Concorde! The Concorde is all solid state/transistors. No tonewheel. Maybe you will not get the exact Booker T sound, but it can sound good, yes.

Please, check out my new improved recording of Green Onions, where play the song on my Nord C1, a Hammond B-3 clonewheel organ. For that video I have provided info about all drawbar registrations, sound settings, etc, which might be of help for you.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • @rounder2u Thank you. Can I buy a tonewheel for the organ to get that B3 sound?

  • Hi NorthernSoulKing

I'm sorry but you can't add a tonewheel (from e.g a B-3, C-3 or A-100) to your Concorde. It is not possible.

I suggest that you try out as many different drawbar registrations and sound settings as possible on your Concorde and find its strengths and accept its inherent weak spots. A solid state organ can't get the 'true' B-3 sound. It is difficult even today even though we now have a few rather close sounding high quality clonewheels.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • @rounder2u Is there a way to make the Concord sound Jazzy or alittle bit more like the B3? Online everysite I have been to only gives a portion of the drawbar settings for some reason also is there a site that gives drawbar settings for the concord for certain songs? Thank you

  • Hi NorthernSoulKing

I'm running out of tips here, sorry, except for this last one. One way forward for you might be finding an old hand Hammond tech, or technically skilled Concorde owner, somewhere, and ask what can be done to tweak the Concorde.

But still, the Concorde is solid state and thereby generates the sound in a totally different way than real tonewheels like the B-3/C-3/A-100 or the most recent high quality clonewheels.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • @rounder2u Thank you the guy that sold it to me is actually a repair guy to I will ask him.

  • @rounder2u I know there are quality instruments out there, but for me, the B-3 is the ultimate. After all these years, a Hammond with a Leslie really does it for me.

  • Hi gilbert

The ultimate jazz organ setup is an old all-tubed B-3 or C-3 with two all-tubed Leslie 122's connected.

Unfortunately they don't make them anymore, so it's really great that we now also have a number of high quality clonewheels to choose from.

Well, the original '62 Green Onions take was recorded with a simpler Hammond model: the M-3.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • good to see your still going rounder :)

  • Hi Wordhammer

No plan of stopping just yet :-)

Btw, I've uploaded an improved version of this oldie.

Unfortunately there is a YouTube bug that I am affected of as of today, which means that I can't send messages (I just end up in my own message inbox when I try to send a message).

But I can reply to messages sent to me. So, please, send a message to my inbox, and I will reply your message with my guide for learning how to play Green Onions.

YouTube staff are working to solve this message bug, btw.

  • Hey rounder2u, I like your organ playing. I learned to play this song by watching this video. Keep up the excellent work!

  • Thanks AgentAndromeda!

Good to hear that you have had use of this video for your own playing :-)

You might be interested in checking out my newer, june 22, recording of this song. The new recording is closer to the original 1962 recording. Mostly the bass line and the chorded chorus, but also the solo is more copy-cat compared to this one.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • @rounder2u So I took a listen to the newer one, but I like this one better because it sounds like what my keyboard sounds like. Also, seeing that you apperantly aren't doing the solos exactly the way like they are in the song, that means they're more your solos and that you did it somewhat your own way which I like because I'm the same way. Once again keep up the excellent work!

  • Hi AgentAndromeda

    I see you point.

Yes, I have noticed that some like this old version better. This version is for me my wannabe copycat version, and my new improved version is more of a real copycat version :-)

    Thanks for your compliments!

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • i like this one better than the improved version. the p 120 kick ass!!

  • Thanks wamadeus!

Good to hear that you have taken your time to compare both versions :-)

If you are going to learn the song, please, go for the improved version, as it is much more accurate.

The P-120 is a good keyboard, no doubt about that :-) A bit weak though in the bass at the jazz organ setting. That's why I played a pedal tone with my left thumb, to get a bit more oompf in the bass departement.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • great cover

  • Thanks Mr Nightrider!

    Keep swinging,

  • Do you know what key the original song is in?

  • Hi scruztkl

The Green Onions original recording from 1962 is in the key of F. It's a 12 bar blues progression in F minor.

If you are interested, please, check out my new, uploaded june 22, improved recording of Green Onions. My both versions are also, like the original, in the key of F.

    Keep swinging,

    Keep being awesome, good sir.

  • Thanks CalvinoBear!

If you are interested, please, check out my new, uploaded june 22, recording of Green Onions. The new version is more close to the original regarding both melody, chords and bass lines.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • this would sound better if you didn't keep the chord root note held down with you thumb in the left hand

  • Hi wiggygfe

If you are interested, please, check out my newer, uploaded june 22, improved version of Green Onions. The new version has no left hand pedal tone to beef up the bass (no need for that as I play on a better instrument), and the bass line is played more accurate to the '62 original recording.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • @rounder2u yep ive just had a listen and your new one does sound better/more accurate to the original :)

  • Hi wiggygfe

  • Nice job rounder!

If anyone wants to see how Booker T. Jones played Green Onions then do the search below. Booker will show you every note as how he recorded it. Can't get any more precise than from the man who wrote and recorded it.

Google "do-you-play-green-onions-correctly-find-out-now/" and you will find it.

  • Thanks wahoospa!

That's a great interview! :-) I saw it some time ago on another website.

My new improved version of Green Onions, uploaded two weeks ago, is based on that interview when it comes to the 'trademark' chorded solo chorus and it's bass line.

The solo on my new version is based on Booker T's solo from the 1962 original recording, and the the left hand bass line I'm playing during the solo is based on Lewie Steinberg's bass from the original '62 recording.

    Keep swinging! :D

    Laser

  • Hi Laser

Sorry, I have no single finger guide for 'onions'...

I'm planning to record a new, hopefully improved, version of 'onions' though, played at my Nord C1, and with an overhead perspective (like my other C1 videos). The overhead view will make it easier to see what notes I'm playing and my fingerings. I'm also planning to add a number of low tempo video tutorials for parts of the song.

    Keep swinging,

  • Good to hear Wordhammer!

The 60s is e.g. when groove based soul jazz and jazz blues really took off.

I've been infected quite heavily myself with the jazz organ blues flu since some time. Don't know when or if I'm gonna be cured, as it is such great fun to play walking bass lines with the left hand while soloing on top with the right :-)

Just a few days ago I uploaded another 60s jazz blues called 'The Cat'.
