The upside is that if you have time and patience, the skills will gradually evolve. To learn an instrument is very much about to be willing to put in the time for practicing. And with transpiration comes inspiration :-)
@munnyay You are young, get going and you will learn. Practice and persistence is the main thing and that's what will makes you good. I see you already have the desire so go for it you wont be sorry.
Hi Rounder, excellent job! I love it! I checked out your other version, but I like this one because I like the sound better. I would be grateful if you could take a look at my version. Once again, excellent job!
I have noticed (with a bit surprise) that quite a few people still prefer this older recording :-) even though my newer recording is more accurate and closer to the original '62 Booker T take.
The upside with this old one as I see it is that it's easy to see here that Green Onions is totally playable even on a smaller single manual keyboard.
I've just checked out your version and it's nice and wth great feeling!
May I suggest that you check out my newer recording (Jun 22, 2010) of Green Onions? My newer recording of the song is more true to the original compared to this. The chorded chorus, the melody and the bass line are all improved in the newer recording.
I play both the white and the black keys during this song. I didn't knew they sounded different ;-)
Good that there still is some use of this earlier version.
Then you might be interested in using this old version to see the keys, and my later version for the improved accuracy of the melody (as I didn't got some of the grace notes, phrasing, etc, down in this earlier version). The chorded chorus is also 'wrong' here.
You might also be interested in using my later version to get the left hand bass line, as the bass line in this version is simplified.
Cheating by looking at your solo to make up my own improv. Ill put in when da video of the concert is up. Concert on my may 3rd. This 15 year old is ready to jam it out! :)

You are very good. Are you familar with the Hammond Concord? If so do you know if I could play this song on it and what drawbar settings are used? Thank you
Sure you can play 'onions' on a Concorde! The Concorde is all solid state/transistors. No tonewheel. Maybe you will not get the exact Booker T sound, but it can sound good, yes.
Please, check out my new improved recording of Green Onions, where play the song on my Nord C1, a Hammond B-3 clonewheel organ. For that video I have provided info about all drawbar registrations, sound settings, etc, which might be of help for you.
I'm sorry but you can't add a tonewheel (from e.g a B-3, C-3 or A-100) to your Concorde. It is not possible.
I suggest that you try out as many different drawbar registrations and sound settings as possible on your Concorde and find its strengths and accept its inherent weak spots. A solid state organ can't get the 'true' B-3 sound. It is difficult even today even though we now have a few rather close sounding high quality clonewheels.
@rounder2u Is there a way to make the Concord sound Jazzy or alittle bit more like the B3? Online everysite I have been to only gives a portion of the drawbar settings for some reason also is there a site that gives drawbar settings for the concord for certain songs? Thank you
I'm running out of tips here, sorry, except for this last one. One way forward for you might be finding an old hand Hammond tech, or technically skilled Concorde owner, somewhere, and ask what can be done to tweak the Concorde.
But still, the Concorde is solid state and thereby generates the sound in a totally different way than real tonewheels like the B-3/C-3/A-100 or the most recent high quality clonewheels.
@rounder2u I know there are quality instruments out there, but for me, the B-3 is the ultimate. After all these years, a Hammond with a Leslie really does it for me.

I have sent my guide for learning how to play Green Onions to your YouTube message inbox. The guide is updated and based on my newer improved version of Green Onions, uploaded june 22.
I have now uploaded three 'How to play' videos for Green Onions:
- Part 1 of 3 - Bass Line During Chords - Slow Tempo
- Part 2 of 3 - Right Hand Chords - Slow Tempo
- Part 3 of 3 - Bass Line During Solo - Slow Tempo
My written guide for learning the song is also updated. If you are interested in the guide, ask in a comment or a message and I will send it to your YouTube message inbox.
I have now sent you my updated Green Onions guide. The main difference is that the updated guide takes into account my new four Green Onions videos, one new, more accurate, recording of the song and three 'how to play' videos.
If anyone wants to see how Booker T. Jones played Green Onions then do the search below. Booker will show you every note as how he recorded it. Can't get any more precise than from the man who wrote and recorded it.
Google "do-you-play-green-onions-correctly-find-out-now/" and you will find it.
That's a great interview! :-) I saw it some time ago on another website.
My new improved version of Green Onions, uploaded two weeks ago, is based on that interview when it comes to the 'trademark' chorded solo chorus and it's bass line.
The solo on my new version is based on Booker T's solo from the 1962 original recording, and the the left hand bass line I'm playing during the solo is based on Lewie Steinberg's bass from the original '62 recording.
In addition to this version, I have now uploaded a new, hopefully improved, version of Green Onions.
I can't post the link for the new version in this comment field but you'll find the link if you expand the description/the text field below this video, or through my channel.
@rounder2u Hey Rounder, how are you? :) Do you have a guide just for the right hand with one key at time? (single finger) if you do, please message it to my inbox (:
Sorry, I have no single finger guide for 'onions'...
I'm planning to record a new, hopefully improved, version of 'onions' though, played at my Nord C1, and with an overhead perspective (like my other C1 videos). The overhead view will make it easier to see what notes I'm playing and my fingerings. I'm also planning to add a number of low tempo video tutorials for parts of the song.
No need for emails as this guide (even if it's quite lengthy) fits in a YouTube text message. Just check out your YouTube message inbox and you'll find my guide for learning how to play Green Onions.
hey rounder2u, love your organ videos. just got a nord c1. if you can send me your green onion guide and any other material, it would be appreciated. peace, dave
I have sent my guide for learning how to play Green Onions to your YouTube message inbox. The guide also contains general learning and practicing tips. If you later on would like to have more tips about how to develop independent left hand walking bass lines while soloing on top, just drop me a line in my message inbox.
@rounder2u fantastic guide. people need to appreciate your effort put into this. the guide is very constructive and im enthusiastic to follow it. Im 14 and Im in love with the swinging sixties :D
The 60s is e.g. when groove based soul jazz and jazz blues really took off.
I've been infected quite heavily myself with the jazz organ blues flu since some time. Don't know when or if I'm gonna be cured, as it is such great fun to play walking bass lines with the left hand while soloing on top with the right :-)
Just a few days ago I uploaded another 60s jazz blues called 'The Cat'.
I don't have sheet music for Green Onions, but I did try to send you my lengthy guide with practicing tips in general and info about learning Green Onions in particular. My guide couldn't be delivered to your message inbox, as you have activated some kind of lock for incoming messages. Sorry.

@rounder2u I know there are quality instruments out there, but for me, the B-3 is the ultimate. After all these years, a Hammond with a Leslie really does it for me.
gilbert20 8 months ago
Hi gilbert
The ultimate jazz organ setup is an old all-tubed B-3 or C-3 with two all-tubed Leslie 122's connected.
Unfortunately they don't make them anymore, so it's really great that we now also have a number of high quality clonewheels to choose from.
Well, the original '62 Green Onions take was recorded with a simpler Hammond model: the M-3.

Hi cky12qxz
I have now sent you my updated Green Onions guide. The main difference is that the updated guide takes into account my new four Green Onions videos, one new, more accurate, recording of the song and three 'how to play' videos.

Nice job rounder!
If anyone wants to see how Booker T. Jones played Green Onions then do the search below. Booker will show you every note as how he recorded it. Can't get any more precise than from the man who wrote and recorded it.
Google "do-you-play-green-onions-correctly-find-out-now/" and you will find it.

Thanks wahoospa!

Laser
Laserdance15 1 year ago
Hi Laser
Sorry, I have no single finger guide for 'onions'...
I'm planning to record a new, hopefully improved, version of 'onions' though, played at my Nord C1, and with an overhead perspective (like my other C1 videos). The overhead view will make it easier to see what notes I'm playing and my fingerings. I'm also planning to add a number of low tempo video tutorials for parts of the song.
