Good question. Usually you support the bassoon with the palm of your left hand and particularly with the left hand index finger joints nearest the hand. I also use another method of supporting the bassoon other than the seat strap. I used to had a neck strap but now I am using a harness that goes around my chest and then hooks to the balance hanger on the basoson.
I had a question that you could hopefully answer. When I play open F (F3 i believe) I have the problem on the weight of the bassoon pulling forwards and because my hands aren't covering any of the holes I was wondering where do you rest the weight?
Thank you for this video! It was very eye-opening for me. I have smaller hands, and you've tought me through this video how to maximize the length I do in my fingers. I never would have thought to give preferences to my joints like that. It makes complete sense! Thank you!
This is a very interesting video.... I play the alto and C-melody saxophone. The bassoon looks so confusing but this is a very interesting video to me as ive never really seen a bassoon up close
the only time i really ever use half hole is on g and even then when i put my finger center or take it off it sounds the same and wat in the world is f#3
For octave designations please see my video "Octave Designations in Music" on Youtube.. I use the common system taught in America, established by the Acoustical Society of America.
i consider the half hole technique essential for proper tuning and articulation. I hear a BIG difference when it is applied.
you say in the video that when doing a half hole (for the G above open F for example) , you should not be sliding your left ring finger up and down. why is that? is it to make the movement faster?
Sliding bakc and forth is very slow and not well controlled. I work for a technique that is fast and consistent. What happens when you perspire and your finger is sweaty? I think you will lose control.
wait! for the G note... where like you go from your thumb down to a lotta fingers down... can you use the key below the hole you have to cover halfly as a sub and still have the same tone??
where can i get one of those neck straps? Because I use a strap that you sit on, and it gets really bothersome to make sure it doesn't get caught on anything and hold my music, and hold my bassoon. Please respond.
Many music stores or online music websites have bassoon neck straps. I use both a neck and seat strap for the instrument. I don't publically recommend products but you might just try searching for them online.
As a bassoon player, I gotta say, I rly do not think about it, it is very natural. Anyways, do you use halfhole on the A after open F? Because I really don't but if you are out of tune, it makes it in tune sometimes, also, should you half hole for notes such as High G and A?
Typically I don't use the half hole on A3 (above open F). I "flick" the start of A3 to avoid the bad start to the note. I use the half hole on F#3, G3, and Ab3. I do use half hole on G4 (your high G). On G5 (highest G) I don't.
@tewelltube ah thank you very much and thank you for these videos they have helped me tremendously...

Dogz37 1 year ago
Sorry for the late reply. Use the bocal that is best in tune. Most use a Heckel 2 or a Fox 3.

Okay. Thanks

Yes, I do. It is more comfortable in that position--better ergonomics for me.
