  • nice !!

  • Hi Mate, Just bought the exact same OLP here in the UK and was thinking of upgrading the PUP and adding a pre-amp, worth doing?

  • @bassatnight - The preamp - YES considering your OLP is probably passive and could use it. The pickup - NO. I think the OLP pickup is quite nice. In the UK I would look at John East's stuff. I would go for the MMSR 3 knob 2 band. Should be quite punchy!

  • VERY NICE use of the low B...Loved IT!!!

  • @hlygoly1 - As my high school music professor used to say - "The voice of God!"

  • Fantastic playing.

  • its by t rex???

  • @zornfilm - Yes, the original song was a T. Rex track sung by Marc Bolan.

  • "OLP MM3 5-String Bass" on guitar center is $280 =p. is there 2 versions for this? on a budget =p

  • @themeleed - The OLP's are no longer made and that seems like a high price for a used one. I would keep looking or make them a lower offer. They come up used quite often.

  • play the Fecking tune john!

  • @tammy90kennedy - Also, I will send anybody that requests it a good quality mp3 with the bass even more pumped up. :+)

  • YEAH!!!!!

  • i like this song, though i have to say i like the version by Cinema Bizarre, that is the version i play on my bass :) good job by the way. excellent. :)

  • you're actually quite awesome at playing the bass!

  • hey man, nice playing!

gonna buy a 5-string bass myself, so, can you tell me if I could get a smooth reggae tone out of this one?

  • I wish the SNL appearance of Power Station was on Youtube. I used to have it on VHS, but a younger brother recorded one of his television shows over it.

  • @CT68 - I remember that performance very vividly. They were playing to a track but I could definitely hear John playing bass. I think it was mostly the huge drum sounds that were being flown in via tape. Yeah, I wish I could see that one again.

  • Dig it!!!

  • Dig it Man!!!

  • hey guy very nice cover!!! you do an exellent cover!!!

  • I LOVE YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!MUAH MUAH MUAH!!!

  • @olgarikka - I like this comment! :+)

  • the best:-)

  • holy crap ...it's John Taylor ..why anyone else ..we all know Bernard was involved in the process but john and andyt were in the band and this is well within their most capable abilty range. ......why are you even posting this of yourself playing with a pick? have some booty pride and get in with the fingers then post it!

  • @sammyp1971 - Hey man, thanks for posting. In the words of John Taylor himself in a recent interview - Bernard played the main bassline and he (John) played the solo. I predict this argument will never end and, yes, we have all seen the video of Bernard playing the solo. It doesn't make sense but there you go! In reference to the pick, I am NOT playing with a pick. I was trying to imitate Bernard Edwards "chucking" technique. I am not very good at it but it fun trying.

  • @zumazmusic Bernard played the slap bass solo, there is a video of the making of the album and it shows this clearly. John def. did not play the solo.

  • Pretty damn good job brother

  • another good job fella! and BE could kick all our asses so no shame there. . .

  • Bernard only did the solo. John Taylor plays with a pick

  • Answer in reference to the bass playing in the power station videos the guitars were brothers John Taylor and Andy Taylor there was also another person with the last name of Taylor is Roger Taylor all of which was and or are from the band Duran Duran

  • @Jeannette65, you are correct except that John and Andy are not brothers. Not biologically anyway!

  • THIS IS GOOD but the bass line is way simple and a bit boring tbh compared to t-rex's version of the bass line with the crazy fills on bass.

  • That's great work...only point of contention I'd bring up is that in the verse when the key switches from E to A you're playing an octave too low.

But that's a fine interpretation of a bassline that, let's face it, was absolutely BURIED in the final mix. My theory is that the player (likely JT) was too blitzed to nail it properly (you've got to remember...this was a SIDE PROJECT, recorded after hours) so they had Bernard cover for him when it was needed and evened it up by mixing it WAY LOW.

  • Isn't there a video on youtube of Bernard Edwards recording the bass solo in the studio if you search "Bernard Edwards power station" ?

Doesn't that prove that it was played by Bernard?

  • there is a dvd were john plays the bass and bernard teaches him the solo.

  • Bernard did the slap solo. JT did the lines.

  • That shows behind a great song you need a powerfull line bass!very well done dude!!!

  • Awesome! Do you play in a band?

  • Excellant. I"m an OLP owner myself. thanks! Is your active or passive electronics? Does that matter for your sond and tone that you got? Someone says OLP dont make those MM copies anymore?

  • This one is passive. I believe only the Tony Levin model was active but I could be wrong. I don't have a preference either way. I tend to lean toward passive basses but lately I've been playing nothing but active so go figure.

OLP is, sadly, out of business. I suppose they were denied their license to make way for the "Sterling" import line.

  • I fooled around and got another OLP. a 5 stringer this time. I shouldnt be easily influenced but I swear this is the last bass for me this month!.

  • Are you sure about that? I thought it was John Taylor of Duran Duran. Also, keep in mind that T-Rex did the original version PS, was a Cover Version.

  • WE're definately sure about Bernard Edwards. JT did the video! He's prettier.

  • Your bass line is impressively beautiful and power.

  • God u make it look easy :(

  • You described your playing this song as "Humble".....Well, if that's what you call Humble, Id like to see what you'd consider Good.........That was a lot betteter than I'd be able to do, I'll say that much

  • Humble as in Bernard Edwards will still kick my ass!

  • Ah, I see......still, that's a lot better than I'd be able to do

  • Who cares who did what? While the bass playing is solid and in the groove it's not exceptional. Why did it take 2 bass players anyway?

  • I saw a video of the recording sessions, the song was played by Taylor, including the first part of the bass solo, the funky bass solo was Edwards who was a real smooth player.

  • The interesting thing is that per John Taylor himself (in a recent web post) it was the other way around - Bernard played the groove and he played the solo. I know the video shows different but that's what he said. And the mystery continues...

  • sorry my mistake, Taylor played the simple bit, and Bernard the funky bit as I got the mixed up since the funky part was the first part and not the second part of the solo....hey it was 2am when I wrote it....

  • "Hi!i have a olp mm 22,and i want to know if it exists EMG pikcups for that model of bass ?thanks"

  • (It's a $139.99 bass!) You mean 1399 or something?

  • No, I'm serious! I bought it from Musician's Friend for that price. I couldn't pass it up. Even when they were not on sale they went for under $300 USD quite often.

  • thanks, now I want to kill myself.

  • Original pickups?...or musicman pickups?

  • Bone stock! Those are even the original strings! A shame they retired their products now...

  • i love your laid back style. i cant stop watching this video....i rock out to it. you are inspiring me when i am too apathetic about playing my bass...love the dog and the fire trucks in the background too.

  • And at BelleFourche: maybe calling JT a charlatan is a bit too much, but I agree with you (and on dvd or vhs everybody can see it clearly) that on Get It On who 'played' was Bernard Edwards, just look at how his fingers moved on that bass. John was there just trying to keep up, without managing...

And thank you Zumaz for this video, you're an excellent bass player.

  • BelleFourche: Dude! With all due respect, you're an IDIOT! John Taylor is truly one of the best bass players in the game. I'm a 24 year bass player who also studied music theory and Charlatan is the last word I'd use to describe John Taylor! Get your head out of your ass a long enough to listen to real music!

  • I hope you also do the other best Power Station song - Some Like It Hot. I love the base line of that song!

  • Nice job, buddy. I really thought I was gonna hate seein' this, but you pulled it off. Nice. Yeah, if anyone's seen that Power Station VHS tape from the old days, you'd laugh at what a shitty-ass bass player John Taylor really is--a pure charlatan.

  • You really are a dumb ass - watch the girls on film night version or last chance on the stairway - u will realise what a great bass player taylor is you complete moron?

  • can i just add if taylor is such a charlatan why are most of zumanzmusic bass lessons based on john taylor - i will tell you why because he is inspirational you fool?

  • You're easily impressed, and dumbass is one word, dumbass. I'm sure you think the kid from Hanson kicks ass, too. I'm surprised you could keep your hand out of your zipper long enough to respond--TWICE. Flush out yer headgear, new guy.

  • lol - i am sure hanson are your heroes - If your going to make such crushing criticisms of other people - lets see you post a video up of your bass playing skills - saying i am easily impressed - your almost saying i could do better?

Well lets see it DUMBASS - I wont hold my breath for the video thou - i can see your all mouth no action.

    complete and utter tosser

  • So if Bernard was playing this, what, or who, was John doing?

  • John was probably looking at Bernard Edwards in ecstacy. John himself admitted that Power Station was an open project, where many artists contributed. If you look at the record sleeve or booklet, it features Mr. Bernard Edwards (RIP) and Mr. Guy Pratt, two very talented bassists in my humble opinion.

Had John played everything on that record, maybe the above mentioned gentlement wouldn't have been necessary.

  • Hi Andy, Interesting that you mention Guy Pratt as according to his Biography he personally wrote (and played!?)the lines to at least two Powerstation tunes including 'Go to Zero' which he wrote with Palmer a year before Powerstation got together.

Hey but no shame in being outgunned by Bernard and Guy.

  • I recently managed to get a copy of the rereleased Power Station 33 1/3 album with extra tracks and a DVD with behind the scenes footage of they guys recording Get it On.

If you guys havent got it yet go find a copy.

The son 'Someday Somehow, Someone is Gonna Pay is a brilliant track ive not ever heard of before.!)

Go get it if you can worth every penny.

  • Man, have you ever talk to JT?

    U good.

    Congratz!

  • No, I have not met John Taylor but I hope to someday!

  • First of all Colby.. you're wrong.. the bassline IS played "strum style".. only the solo is slapped... which brings me to my next point..

Zuma, you did your thing man, but there's a video up on here which shows Bernard and John Taylor in the studio. John is playing the bass part with a pick.. Bernard only played the solo... If you listen closely.. you can hear the sound of a pick on the strings. Bernard's chucking technique has a slightly softer attack. Anyway, GREAT JOB ! Nice feel

  • i rock

  • can you slowly teach the bass solo

  • you kick butt! Who makes the OLP copy, I can't read it. You make it look so easy. Thank you for taking the time to record and post. Take Care!

  • Man, that's so cool... you just made me wanna go out and buy a bass guitar, you bastard! Good job and thanks for posting!

  • U doubters are silly, it may not be 100% but the dude does a great job.

  • omg he sux he isnt playing it right he is struming when he is suppost to play slap bass i know how to play it on bass and my dad to

  • OK, post your version of the song, and we'll pick which one is best. My guess is it won't be yours!

  • you have to give it up for zuma...that is some serious john taylor.edwards bass playing...gotta give respect..i Bow before you sir!!

  • dude what combo are you using?i want to buy a 4 strings olp...would recommande me to do it?

  • If you can find an OLP (don't think they make them new anymore) I think it's a great bass for the money. I am not using an amp. I record direct to ProTools.

  • hi

i know where you can get an olp from...there are loads of them at my local guitar center..they are not hard to come by at all....if guitar center fails go ebay..for the money they are very very nice and should seve you very well..ive got a musicman bongo myself..i call it my cadeliac:)

    D

  • Kicks Ass, awesome stuff,

  • this is just a cover the orignal by marc bolen and T-Rex is better

  • Great Job!

I used to play the crap outta this song. Thanks for saying you couldn't hear what was going on in the chorus. I thought it was just me (lol)! I love you approach and your frankness. Honestly I don't think John played on RIO either!!!

  • It's funny, the Power Station Album, along with Make It Big were my first two albums I bought with my own money.

I got them both on record, not tape or CD but I had the actual records for both. To bad they disapeared when I started moving atround.

    Good job BTY.

  • Yazoo's single for "Situation" and Wham's Make it Big were my first records. Still have them!

  • Cool we have the same taste in music !

  • Thanks, this is cool!! I was always wondering why NONE of the Power Staion songs ended up in Rock Band, or Guitar Hero for that matter. Power Station kicks ass!!

  • Flaco, desde argentina, sos un capooo!

  • Huh. John Taylor played... the Bass.... on this song.... but, ummm, ok....

  • Somebody posted a nice video, look for "Power Station :John Taylor and Bernard Edwards" for a very interesting footage...Bernard Edwards playing this...

  • gene simmons eat your heart out

  • Wow that was really good, you should be in a band or something!!

  • Beautiful bass mate, puts my old Aria to shame.

How long you been playing for mate?

  • I've been playing for 21 years now. (Yikes!)

  • Have you ever tried the Some like it hot bass line?

  • I'm definitely gonna do it someday. It's up there as one of my favorite things to play.

  • Thats tight man.

  • great job mate

  • it's not that cheap! the 4 string mm2 its US $250 in the USA and over US$ 300 IN OTHER COUNTRIES

  • It was that cheap when I bought it! I swear! It was on special at Musician's Friend. I couldn't resist it. Also, I heard that Ernie Ball is not renewing the OLP license so they (the OLP Stingrays that is) may be unavailable soon.

  • great stuff

  • Great playing!! Sounded awesome! Wasn't it John Taylor who played the bass on this tune?

  • It turns out I had it backwards. Bernard played the bass line and John played the solo. I know Bernard is shown playing to it in the video but that's what John himself has said so I'm leaving it at that.

  • awesome

  • I wish my attempt at mimickicking "Bass-God" Bernard Edwards was as humble as yours... You really rock, mate! thanx for your lessons. JT rules!

  • Well, I must be a glutton for punishment because I am doing Sister Sledge's We are Family next.

  • i try to work on that every once in a while, but i can't quite move my left hand fast enought, though it's been a while, so maybe i can

  • cool.

  • I saw a special on MTV where they filmed the Power Station making the album. I saw the part where Bernard sat next to JT and Bernard said something like "you ready to do this funky little break. Then they played the solo for Bang a Gong and it was Bernard that played the slap solo and John finished the rest of the song.

  • I think I read somewhere that John Taylor said that he was not a slap bass fanatic, that he only did some parts, "such as the slapping you hear on Get It On"...if I find that link I´ll include it.

  • Hey everybody, I'll re-iterate what was "decided" earlier in the thread. Bernard played the song and John played the slap solo (including the little percussive bits after it). Based on everyone's input I am pretty satisfied with that conclusion. R.I.P. Bernard and rock on John!

  • I remember watching a special on MTV about the making of the Power Station album. They interviewed the band and filmed them making the album. They showed a part where Bernard sat next to JT and he Bernard said "you ready to this funky little break. They went into the solo and Bernard played the slap solo and JT finished the rest.

  • Awesome - I play some rhythm guitar and sing by ear. Haven't bothered to look at sheet music since I was a kid. This song was what made me want to learn because it's geared great for the guitar and drums. Loud. Yeah, I've grown up since.

  • Do you know where to find decent guitar lessons for free? Cause I had one for months here and I'm getting a little pathetic, :d

  • thanks, its such a tough decision.

especially since they are both the exact same price.

i know the bassist of Flyleaf uses the actual musicman, and after seeing him play this live It makes me want to get the bass even more.

im probably gonna go with this, thanks :D.

  • im trying to find a bass that has a lot of growl, and mostly mid-low tone range.

    and i mean, dirty growl.

this bass sounds pretty growly, and i noticed you siad you smoothed it out a little.

im looking at getting either getting the 4 string version of what youre playing, or a squier special with the jazz and precision pickup combo.

which would be better for me?

    thanks and God bless.

  • That's a hard one. I haven't play that Squier but I know that pickup combo is pretty beefy. It's tough to beat that big MM humbucker though! I think the OLP would be growlier but the Squier will be more versatile.

  • where did you get that bass at

  • I purchased it from the musiciansfriend website. I was sure the price was a mistake so I bought one to see if they would actually ship it to me. Amazing bass for the money. The OLP 4-string is great as well.

  • :) I got my guitar from there. It's a really great company.

  • Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! That was awesome. I love the way you throw it out there and can't wait to see more DD or Power Station. Damn good bass!!! Rock on!

  • thats a very nice sounding bass ,i cant bealive it was that cheap.

  • It actually sounds better than that. I was trying to imitate a certain technique and it actually thinned the sound out. If I just play it regular fingerstyle this thing is punchy as heck.

  • WOW! Fantastic.

  • John Taylor is an awesome bass player. He played everything except the slap bass solo on this song. It seems like you're missing the subtle triplets he plays after the slap solo. And could somebody give credit to Marc Bolan and T.Rex for writing this gem. Oh wait... I just did. Cheers.

  • Believe it or not, I now believe that the solo and the funky bits after WERE played by John. The rest of the song is Bernard... I'll listen for those triplets you mention. I am doing the fast little funky bits though. I think my volume is a bit low on this one.

  • Also big it up for the original T.Rex bass guitarist Steve Currie,an amazing musician!!!

  • my favorite part starting at 3:19...peace!

  • Thank God I bought the sheet music for this album 22 years ago when I first took up the instrument.

  • Wow, are you saying that you have the bass part written out? I would love to see it...and yes, Rest in Peace Tony, Robert, and Bernard.

  • I have the whole songbook. I bought it when the album came out, It was 6.95 in 1986.

  • I know for a fact the Bernard Edwards created the bass fill on Get it On. If memory recalls, JT asked him for his input cause JT wanted something funky in there and who better to ask than Bernard. JTs jaw dropped in awe when Bernard took the bass and in one second made that riff. Bernard said to JT at that moment "thats not quite good, but its the first thing that popped up", JT said "that was perfect, i wanna keep it" Bernard didnt agree and kinda laughed. I dont know who recorded it.

  • Cool info. Sounds like you were there!

  • I have the video and Bernard Edwards played the solo on "Bang A Gong" right on the spot but John Taylor is a bass monster in his own right and is so underrated Duran Duran was more than a bunch of prettyboys these dudes could play. R.I.P. Bernard and Tony your music inspired to take up the Bass alon with John Taylor.

  • Sorry Zumazmusic....Nice try ....but no cigar.

  • The purpose for me is to teach. I welcome constructive criticism and constructive opinion; however, your comment is neither. Can you be more specific? Also, if you read my video description I state "My humble attempt at mimicking Bernard Edwards"...and in my intro I admit to making up some of the bass line.

  • Mowac - I wasn't able to find YOUR bass lesson video for this song, until you post one that's note perfect, maybe you should shut the fuck up.

  • It pains me with regret to inform you that you have completely exhausted your entire vocabulary with that last statement.....tsk..tsk..tsk.

  • Coming to a youtube near you....

The Power Station-Bang a gong (on bass)

(enter that on the search column) ...so .now you can see my video.

  • I would have to VERY respectfully disagree with the part about Bernard playing this song, "especially the solo". There's just no way to know, but evidence (past Duran recordings, Live Aid, etc...) seem to indicate that this was very easily John's style. I'm a huge Bernard fan (R.I.P.), but I have to speak up for John on this one. Just my 2 cents, and thanks for featuring a cool cover by a great bunch of players.

  • Hey Jer, we pretty much agreed that John played the solo and Bernard played the rest. This is, in fact, what John says himself. Thanks for stopping by.

  • Great, great, zuma! Excellent choice, the five string bass to play this song! Very cool!

  • your right i used to play that in a band years ago its a basterd to pick out the notes

  • You're not kidding! Believe me, it pains me to just make it up but I tried every trick up my sleeve and sometimes I just can't hear what the notes are! I feel "Addicted to Love" coming soon...

  • yea i used to play that years ago when i 1st started dont think i ever played it right lol.

  • I love the bass. It's my favorite, although it's nothing without the Lead Guitar and the Drums, (and vocals)

    Thanks for the demo!!

  • Thanks for the video! Geddy Lee and Chris Squire are the 2 best bass players in rock history. And, the most underrated bass player ever-Duran Duran's John Taylor. Yes, he was a prettyboy, but that dude could play! His playing in "Rio" is classic, and his groove in "Notorious" is an all-time-great funk-bass groove. Who agrees with all of this?

  • I agree with all of that... I hate it when people say, John Taylor was just a very popular pinup poster boy and not a musician!! Absolutely false!! John is a very good musician. He's not a technical player like Flea, Chris Squire,Jaco Pastorius Geddy Lee or Ryan Martinie...But he does FEEL the music and his basslines always sound Awesome!!! By the way, the whole "Notorious" album has that great funk bass feel!! I never heard that specific funky-sound again on a Duran album!

  • That "Notorious" album only had a few hits, and did not sell nearly as well as some of their other albums. I don't think enough people gave it a chance, since Roger Taylor and Andy Taylor had both recently left. So, I would say that "Notorious" as an album is very underrated!

  • nope duran was out of their minds making crappy videos and changing drasticly too bad MTV is what makes and breaks most bands

  • man, thats fucking excellent. great bass playing!

  • DUDE YOU HAVE A LOT OF BASS GUITARS

  • You haven't even seen them all!

  • ZUMA, i also have an ARIA PRO2 that i bought used in 1983 for $800.. Similar to JTs cept it has duel pickups.. Its my baby. I will start posting some of my playing of DD.. Just dont laugh too much

  • Bernard Edwards was and probably still is one of JT's heroes.

  • That's for sure! Who the heck cares who played what part. I love 'em both!!!

  • :) oops. I was in such a hurry to let you know about John's comment, I didn't read sardanap's comment!

  • Zuzaz, I never knew that Bernard played on this track. I was about to say something but came across a comment about it on DD's official webpage. Check out what John writes on AskKaty posted on 6/20/07--John's birthday, btw. :)

  • By the way, i never knew Bernard was playing this song. I thought John played every song on the Powerstation cd, and Bernard was just kinda helping/producing with some of his basslines. So thanks for the info! You can also watch them play together on the powerstation dvd.

Awesome bunch of musicians together! Andy Taylor is also definately no joke on guitar!

  • Yeah, I watched that "DVD" endlessly when it was just a VHS tape I recorded from the tele long ago. I have now purchased the DVD as well. John does play bits and pieces but it just sounds like Bernard . I'm not taking away from John. That kind of stuff happens in the biz. It's really no big deal.

  • Ask katy from dd official site

"Power Station was a collective with everyone diving in and doing a bit of this, a bit of that. You got to remember that the producer, Bernard, was the hot shit bass player of the time. I wanted him to play something on the album and he said okay, I'll play on this one. The break is me though, the solo if you will. His style of playing on it is reminiscent of Addicted To Love. Check it Out. JT"

  • And i can't still believe JT did that solo. Is not his style, nor his sound ...but if JT himself say so .....

  • You know sardanap, believe it or not, that could make more sense than it being the other way around. IF John played Bernard's bass it would be very feasible. Technically the solo is not that difficult. It's more about the sound and the feel. Like you said, if he said so...

  • Yep it's not that difficult, maybe Bernard composed that solo and John recorded it. In the Powerstation video there must be some piece where Bernard was playing the solo and John was doing the funky stuff

  • this guy doesnt quite look like john does he.

  • ...and here I thought that if I could play like John, I would start looking like him too!

  • From Stockholm Sweden,,,you are good....

  • Wow!!! Thanks for showing this bassline!!! I can play almost all powerstation songs on bass, but this one and murderess never worked for me because i counld't hear the bass very well on the record (exept for the bass solo). But it seems you play it correctly, thanks! I'm gonna try this one immidiately on my warwick thumb bass!!

  • !!!Great!!! !!THNKS!!

  • There should be some kind of talkbass club on youtube if there isn't already.

  • i wuld love to try an olp 5 string like that

    sounds great
