In terms of big names, it wasn't a classic Hennessy - but it was a wonderful riding performance from Mattie Batchelor. The run by Carruthers came hard on the heels of a stamina sapping race at Cheltenham. I've been watching racing for 45 years and no win has pleased me more than this. As for saying Carruthers didn't deserve it? Granted he wasn't carrying weight, but this was a bonny, brave performance. Huge sentiment, yes - Mattie's mum's death date and Lord Oaksey - but a worthy winner.
This was the worst Hennessy i have ever seen.I cannot bring myself to congratulate Carruthers as he is thoroughly exposed the 2nd too looks hard to place and good old Fair Along is a better hurdler. For me any of the previous 10 winners would have trounced this field.I also dont like the idea Carruthers deserved it this is purely down to who owned it and nothing to do with what the horse has done previously as he is exposed. The second seaon novices look overhyped especially time for rupert
you know its a well below average hennessey when two thoroughly exposed monkeys like carruthers and fair along finished first and third. the second season novices, who usually come ot the fore in the hennessey, were disappointing and there was not a gold cup horse, ala denman, in there.
@azertyuiop32 I agree with you to a certain extent, a very poor Hennessy, but to be fair to Carruthers he was on a very handy mark. I had £5 e/w on him at 20/1 on Friday. I never thought he would win, but thought he was a very sure bet for a place. 6th last year remember off 14lbs higher and 4th in a Gold Cup... The second season novices all look very average, even Time For Rupert is starting to dissappoint. Long Run is lucky he's come at a time when the division is short of talent.
What I still cant work out is, what went wrong with 1883?

@GTFCRyan87 Agree, even Quito Del Rouge was looking well beaten first time out before the leaders tired.
