'Borrowed' this album long term off a friend at the time and carried it everywhere as a badge, only to learn, 40 years later, our school bus passed by Bernie's birthplace twice a day - and we didn't know it! Marvellous stuff.
my juvinile arrest(breaking into my jr high school)gave me a musical influence of EJ ,for my mother made me listen to this repeatedly when she took me home from jail.........I am now an Architect....and SANE, so they say.....
May I recommend to you that have listened to this song and feel you have a little excess energy, to go to 'Federal Sweep Nets 1300 Gang Members' or similar YT vids & say a few things there. Please keep it civil & coherent. Or if it is all too much and you find yourself doubting humanity, come back here & listen to Elton again with a renewed understanding of the song :)
Bernie Taupin really captured the feeling-- if you've ever been arrested and held, -- there's no feeling like realizing nobody is going to let you go, no matter how small the infraction, that no one will free you and the fear of the unknown. Excellent job from both Taupin and Elton.
awesome song! dont think elton ever did a bad song--anyone trying to do a remake of any of his songs just cant compare to the real thing!!Elton is the best !!
this song takes me back to the 70's when I used 2 sit on my Dad's lap and we would listen to this song and he would explain the meaning as was only 10 yrs old. It is still my favorite song today!!
i suppose joshua needs a new coat as well. Or the red white and blue needs updating. Or the blues are just the wrong shade of................... ot the cistine chapel could you use a little graffitti...
Are you wasting my time, or do you know for sure, DUDE, because I can go home and check my album cover once I get off work. If you are for sure, please don't use the word, "think".
Interesting..thanks for the trivia. I'm glad that Sir Elton brought him back eventually. He certainly found someone who SOUNDED like Dee, though, didn't he?
Actually, Elton dedicated ROTW to Nigel and Dee. As you probably know by now, if you checked the album sleeve, Kenny Passarelli played bass on that album.
Yes, I've gone home since my last post and found that out. And I also see that Nigel is not on the album as well. So sorry, I meant no disrespect to Kenny Passarelli, didn't mean to say that he was Dee Murray - although if he's smart he'd take that as a compliment!
Use to be my stoner album out in my 70's chevy II Canso wagon, my sweet "Windjammer" car. (noisy windy sounding muffler when I booted it) joke, ah ya, good times! :)
The guitars on this song are awesome, very mcuh inspired "Layla." The strings blend in well. The talent of EJ, Taupin, Buckmaster and Johnstone combine beautifully.
thanks for posting this album...my fav is High Flying Bird!

What musical genre would you say this is? Blues?
goauld88 2 years ago
thats the thing with elton john
most of his songs (apart from ones like funeral for a friend and love lies bleeding of course) are pop-based.
but he always adds a bit of his own touch to it...
like this song is pop-based, but elton is singing it like the blues...
so basically say this should belong to elton =]
montypython11111 2 years ago
@goauld88 Yeah blues mostly. Blues rock. Elton had some great guitar players in his band.

Dee Murray is the best unknown bass player in recorded history.
Just listen to the album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road".
dennismp 2 years ago 3
I did that way back when it was still on LP. You don't have to tell me about him - I believe he could have easily been one of the Funk Brothers!
Listen to "Grow some Funk of Your Own" from "Rock of the Westies".
IrisMG 2 years ago
I don't think Dee Murray played on Rock of the Westies dude ;).

hehe dude. Dee Muray DOESN'T play on ROTW. I didn't make that statement just for fun you see...hehe this is quite funny actually...
torturedej 2 years ago
Well then should I just thank you then? Doesn't change my opinion of Dee Murray, if that's what you're going for.
IrisMG 2 years ago
No, no, you're mistaken. Dee Murray was excellent. I wish you all good.
torturedej 2 years ago
OK then. Sorry I gave credit to another guy. Makes me look like it's been 30 years since I played that album! I'll look at that when I get home.
IrisMG 2 years ago
I'm right though - Elton wanted a different and more rock-oriented sound after the masterpiece CFATBDC.
