I used to dj on vinyl back when everything was 1200's. My question is, what cdj's are advisable for a small home studio set up? Obviously I would like quality, but would like to keep it as affordable as I can. Much thanks!
OK,so ive matched the beat right..it then begins to go off beat again.So..how do I determine how much to readjust the pitch?,in order for it to continue on beat.I always seem to miscalculate the readjusting,so it catchs the beat but then shortly after it goes off again. These vids are great bu i cant seem to overcome this.Any tips would be GREAT!!!!
dude your tips and stuff has landed me a opener spot at the local techno bar ive been using cdj for about 5 months now and the djs there say i am really good i have you to thank you
@DjDannYL The purpose of the jogwheel is to synchronise the beats, I mean, you could have two songs at the same speed (BPM) bu that doesn't mean that the beats of song 1 are occurring at the same time as the song 2, you move the jogwheel clockwise or counter-clockwise to accomplish that...
hey, im doing a set on friday, im used to mixing on a numark mixtrack pro, and those kinda mixers with virtual dj, and my preferred Traktor Pro. i picked up mixing on thm instantly with out practice, the set on fridays on cdjs, got all my tracks on cds, but i was also wondering if theyre about the same difficulty as learning to use? ie whether il be able to pick it up as easy if im doing a simple dubstep mix.
i can ride the pitch with vinyl put it just dont work rite on cdjs,i find ifyou move the pitch 1st then use the jog wheel to catch up with the pitch its way better than jog wheel 1st then pitch ,,, :p
Been DJing on 1210's for about 10 years now and am thinking about getting one of these CDJ's. I have always wondered mixing works, and this tutorial is great. Nice one mate.
to Rooookas: thanks man! but if i choose a song which has many beatles as you say how can i beat match it if it changing, do i have to adapt it each time it changes?
ellaskins: your tutorials are the best! but i have a question. in my particular cdj turntables, as i set the pitch at lets say 125 bpm, randomly it goes to 123 and then back to 125 and in moves without me moving the pitch control. is that normal?
@robertosoccer yes, especially during the beatles parts (holes) when there are no beats the cdj could get confused a bit and start writting random bpm's
I dont agree mate you're saying that after moving the jog wheel it will be back off beat well. If your beat is off but the bpm is the same moving the jog wheel will also move the track so it will match the beats
@YuzaDaMan no offense m8, but new people getting started won't have the time/patience/funding to start with a decent set of vinyl. Everyone must start somewhere, and if everyone played the same style on the same media, it would all sound the same, right? Oy, everyone has different style. Enjoy yours, and appreciate others'. :-)
@YuzaDaMan Yeah, try using a cdj with no information about your track except for time left and percent pitch change and no vinyl scratch capabilities........... man my setup sucks...........
i think thats only in serato and virtual dj. correct me if mistaken. but whats the point in pressing sync? you wont get any better at being a dj, but just pressing sync when your in trouble.
@NightriderSam of course you get better but i like the sync button cuz its automatic. but if your experienced then you know what songs go together. i just scratch for fun but if i get good enough i might hit a couple parties.
Hi, can some one tell me when you move the pitch at the side will it round of the bpm? e.g. if i move it up will it go to 120.00 > 121.00 ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, or 120.00 > 120.35 i have this problem when mxiing with Traktor it really zones in on the bpm making it difficult to get the right beat match.
I love this guy , you got the best approach in teaching any technique , you speak clearly and wisely , and your tutorials are always accurate . Keep on posting other tutorials . TUMBS UP EVERYBODY
I have been making this mistake for a long time. This technique is VERY fundamental in order to avoid a trainwreck. By moving the pitch you make your pitch bending adjustment permanent. i get that your turning it to match the beat of the other track but why do thatwhen you can just speed the it up with the dial not stuffing round with the truntable and then matching it to the dial??
@FlappyFlipFlops95 probs not mate start with a computer controller for a software like tractor and virtual dj and a cdj cost about 700 to about 1 half grand depending on if its second hand or not and which model !!
@detroit110 yeah, but if you do so, you will never be able to actually do it by ear. He teaches you how to do it the hard way. looking at the bpm and matching those is like using a crutch. It 'dumb-downs' your real ability to mix.
But why do you even need to jog the Cdj in the first place? Why don't you just change the pitch rather than first moving the cdj clockwise/anticlockwise then changing the pitch?
Got plonked in a club where they had 2 cdj1000's absolute fucking nightmare as i'd never used them before..too used to denons..ok now as i've had a couple of months practice but initially i sounded like

im no dj but i guess it will be at the right pitch but you have to be lucky that the beats are at the right moment ..they might beat after each other ..i hope you understand what i mean =P
Set the point you want to play at as a cue. Or if you have a Pioneer you can sample that point and use it anywhere you want. I am kinda unclear on you question but I hope it helps.

I work in technology it is what I do for a lviing I just feel that using technics for decks requires more skill. I have used CD decks before not only do they not feel or sound the same they also can scratch like a real deck. I am all about technology infact I like serato I just can not stand CD decks and controller decks it is a cop out. A real DJ would use turntables regardless of technology, you got serato now, there is no excuse.
These vids are mostly for garage DJs, who dont want to lug around two 12" turntables and a mixer. And scratching most club music that was made in the last 15 years sounds corny.
I don't hate man like I said I just feel it is a cop out. Every club I have played in the last 2 years has had a pair of tech 1200s ready for use. All I bring is my mixer, laptop and serato box that is not alot to carry I feel it is cheating, on a CD controller you have an option of button cue, you can tap out the drop of a song in a heartbeat, I have to drag the record manually. When I see a DJ I want to see him use turntables but miost people dont know or care as long as music is being played.
no offense but using a serato is cheating immediately, dont get me wrong i love the thing to death its made my job easier ten times fold but calling something cheating cus of the cue when the bpms are right in front of you seems off...
I completely agree scratching on any dance track is lame and played out. It didn't sound good in 1990 and it mos def doesn't sound good now. I just find it less of a skill to mix on controllers, I even turn off the tempo lock on serato, everything should be done live, you need to give your self to the crowd put yourself out there take a chance. otherwise you are hiding behind your play list and technology.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You are a moron sir. I don't need to learn about them, I was around using turntables when CD decks came out, they suck they are noob and the scratching on it sounds like shit.
soo, the slider changes pitch and tempo, what if you have a song thats too fast but is at the samepitch as the one playing, surely if you slow it down it will go out of tune ? sorry fr the noobyness :)
technically U don't have 2 use jog U could just use slider.
however pitch is just off a bit.
Rather then moving slider way faster to catch up then try to move it all the way back & guess where a litle bit ahead of where it was is we can instead use the jog 2 catch up & only slightly move pitch slider forward, so you know it is just a bit faster for sure.
If it doesn't work re-jog 2 catchup & move slider a litte faster & again & again etc etc until its matched good.
Let's say your headphonetrack is playing just a little bit to fast, you can push back the jog till they're tied and then adjust the real tempo with the slider. Or..first adjust with the slider so the tracks are in the same tempo but just a bit offbeat and then correct that by pushing the platter back or forward.
Also if you pressed play just a lil' to late with both faders up, you can correct that by giving the platter a little push;)
Thanks for the vid man! It was VERY useful! Love the way you explain things!

I have been making this mistake for a long time. This technique is VERY fundamental in order to avoid a trainwreck. By moving the pitch you make your pitch bending adjustment permanent. If not you will lose the value of the pitch bend.

Correction to last post :
"they also can NOT scratch like a real deck"

Dude, whats with the hate???
These vids are mostly for garage DJs, who dont want to lug around two 12" turntables and a mixer. And scratching most club music that was made in the last 15 years sounds corny.
kapsakorsten 2 years ago
I don't hate man like I said I just feel it is a cop out. Every club I have played in the last 2 years has had a pair of tech 1200s ready for use. All I bring is my mixer, laptop and serato box that is not alot to carry I feel it is cheating, on a CD controller you have an option of button cue, you can tap out the drop of a song in a heartbeat, I have to drag the record manually. When I see a DJ I want to see him use turntables but miost people dont know or care as long as music is being played.
LndSofaKing1337 2 years ago
no offense but using a serato is cheating immediately, dont get me wrong i love the thing to death its made my job easier ten times fold but calling something cheating cus of the cue when the bpms are right in front of you seems off...

I dontunderstand why you cant just move the pitch control to speed it or slow it ? whey do you even need to touch the jogg wheel ?
killthedrummer 2 years ago
soo, the slider changes pitch and tempo, what if you have a song thats too fast but is at the samepitch as the one playing, surely if you slow it down it will go out of tune ? sorry fr the noobyness :)

Dude...that really helped....I agree there are different ways of beat matching...whichever is convenient for you...

alain026 2 years ago
your better off learning to beat match with out using that little indicator, it can trip sometimes.
jonobyrne 2 years ago
DJThijz 2 years ago

Bit of a n00by question here but if it's all done by the pitch slider why do you even need to use the jog wheel at all? Seems kinda pointless to me.
artifactingreality 2 years ago
if u have the same speed on the two track (for example 128bpm) but don't matches perfectly you can match them use the jog
albiz94 2 years ago
technically U don't have 2 use jog U could just use slider.
however pitch is just off a bit.
Rather then moving slider way faster to catch up then try to move it all the way back & guess where a litle bit ahead of where it was is we can instead use the jog 2 catch up & only slightly move pitch slider forward, so you know it is just a bit faster for sure.
If it doesn't work re-jog 2 catchup & move slider a litte faster & again & again etc etc until its matched good.

well watch it he'll show u if you use the slider and its not on pitch proply u use the jog wheel to either speed it up alittle or slow it down
masonizere 2 years ago
Let's say your headphonetrack is playing just a little bit to fast, you can push back the jog till they're tied and then adjust the real tempo with the slider. Or..first adjust with the slider so the tracks are in the same tempo but just a bit offbeat and then correct that by pushing the platter back or forward.
Also if you pressed play just a lil' to late with both faders up, you can correct that by giving the platter a little push;)
Get it?
