@Shamik1 Of course it's meant to be an angry song!
It's all about rage at upper-class types thinking it's fun and games to live the life of under-priveleged folk, when they'll never understand how it truly is to be "common" because they aren't stuck living that way.
MCR are a bad band, but they definitely capture the emotion of the song better.
This article says it better than I could: cracked(dot)com/blog/5-cover-songs-that-stole-show-from-originals/
@FarmerMayhem You realize that that article says that William Shatner preformed this song better than Pulp does, right? It isn't saying the song should be preformed with angst and hatred, it says it should be preformed with passion and heart. MCR preforms it the way an angry teenager would send a letter to the teacher that gives them a failing grade, Shatner preforms it the way a man finishes a debate with wit and intellect in a calm collected way while still making fun of the opposition.
@JackSkellingFrost. I still think the point stands that this version better encapsulated the general feeling of the song. I don't think this song sounds overly angsty, but it does show fury and comtempt and loathing.
I feel dirty saying this but I think they perform this song as it should be performed, and as it would be performed had it been performed by a great punk band way back when.
@FarmerMayhem If we're going with the version that better showed the emotion of the song, then definitely Shatner and Pulp beat out MCR here. I like MCR, I've been a fan for a while, but I wouldn't consider them punk and the majority of their music is angsty and spiteful. This song is meant to be played with humility as well as anger at the class differences. Gerard just sings it in the way that he's mad, but that's not the point of the song. The point is that you're mad at yourself as well.
@YourBestDroog you may not have heard the original but that's ok ....Search for Pulp Common People , then listen to it again if you don't understand it
@Shamik1 no, i've heard it. and it's good, i just think the song is played better with the tint of bitterness and angst. i'm not necessarily defending MCR just saying after listening to this and Shatner's cover, Pulp's just seems so petite and inadequate.
Dudes, stop argueing. listen to the music that you wanna listen to, dont go & write stereotypical comments on ones you dont agree with or don't like the cover. ok, so a lot of mcr fans are teenage girls. that's 'cause teenagers can be emotional, and mcr is an emotional & meaningful band and the people in the band help with not just the lyrics but give messages of hope. dont shoot that down if you don't know anything about it. no offence to anyone. :)
Why all the arguing? Especially between teens and adults. Really? Anyone can like any music they want, it doesn't matter. One person's music God may be another's nightmare and that's perfectly okay. If you don't like it, then don't listen, or convey your opinion in a respectful manner. That's all. There's no reason to be freaking out on each other via Youtube for something so immensely insignificant. I loved the cover, but I also love the original. See, that's it. Life goes on.
Sorry, meant to say "angsty teenagers in general". Please don't tell me you aren't one, your colorful language without lack of any significant provocation proves my point very clearly. Also, you are 14 and your prefrontal cortex has yet to develop fully to allow a deeper appreciation for more sophisticated thoughts.
Do you think Simple Plan is a good band as well? Or how about Lincoln park? They aren't.
How about giving Radiohead a listen? Or maybe try The Killers. Also give Pulp a listen to.
@bulbinking sorry i didn't utilise wikipedia for my response, i just thought it was shallow. sorry, also - i hate simple plan and i DESPISE linkin park. radiohead are alright, though. the killers are amazing; one of my favourite bands. i also like la dispute.
i apologise for not conforming to your stereotypes; i'll go cry because i'm a fucking angsty teenager.
I just want you to know most people consider MCR to be one of those "teenage girl" bands. Also while they did sing well the song had poor production and was grainy. MRC also failed to grasp the emotional tone that pulp presented in the original. They were singing in a "matter of fact" way while MCR sang the lyrics to be "in your face" and thats what turned me off the most to their cover.
p.s. It is quite funny that there is indeed no god. Glad to see a young enlightened one.
@bulbinking It's not just GIRLS who like MCR. I am in fact a boy... And just because someone likes MCR, then it doesn't mean that they don't like other music which you define as 'good.'
I like Pulp but not MCR, but I'm not closed-minded to covers. What I don't like about this one, though, is that I don't think they understand the meaning.
@theoneandonlyadey youtube is a user generated site of which users upload videos and comments that are relevant to their taste and opinion. It's a social network, thus making it obvious that I can put whatever the fuck I wanttt :) xxx
I love MCR more than any other music I have ever heard, and I also like Pulp. But I found out about Pulp through MCR.
If you're going to hate on MCR, don't comment on a video that has them in it, because there are people (like me) who owe their lives to MCR and are gonna get fucking pissed off at you.
they have killed it, call the cops
