Hi again! Regarding our discussion about the Dutch sub O-19 and the possiblity that a US navy pilot broke off an attack on a suspected Dutch sub with numbers in orange: On w w w. dutchfleet. n e t (leave the open spaces) I dropped your question. Dutch subs had no numbers in orange, only in the colour white or black. On dutchfleet there are extensive logs of all waractions of the dutch subs (very interesting!). It seems no sub operated in the Wake area. Sincerely,'Change6609'
Hi! I'm not sure if our Dutch submarines in the Pacific had numbers in orange painted on the conning tower.
I'll try to check this out.
But Dutch air force planes did carry an orange triangle on them, which they only carried in wartime, (our normal roundle, in red, white and blue could be too much like the british roundle)

Thank you for posting this amazing video! My great uncle is in it , topside on the Cod, nice to see him so young! He wrote about this in his journal, now property of the Cod museum.
I've been aboard USS COD up in Cleveland; the tour is absolutely fascinating. Best of all, she has not had her casing cut away to install stairs for the public; if you want to tour the boat, then you have to enter through the forward torpedo room hatch and down the two short ladders there. If you get the chance to go aboard her, do so.
The Netherlands had submarines since before WW 1... At the start of WW 2 the netherlands even had more sub's than the Germans. It was also the Dutch navy that invented the 'Schnorkel'=mecahnism through which diesel-powerd sub's could load their batteries without emerging. Dutch subs were the first to sink (a lot of) jap. transportships in WW 2. Today, the Dutch navy still operates 4 very modern diesel sub's
@Change6609 bud whe where invaded by germany in 1945 so from where did those subs operate becase the netherlands was one of the first countrys they invade
and at the time they didint even had defences whe had like 20/25 tanks and some of them where dug in becase they didint workt they used them as atillerie olso many of our weapons where ww1 or even pre ww1
(i dont say you lying or that i dont belive you iam just curious)(iam dutch btw)
Ik ben ook Nederlands, maar ik zal maar even in het Engels antwoorden
The Kingdom of the Netherlands also included what's now called Indonesia (Dutch East Indies (DEI)). The DEI were invaded by the Japanese after Pearl Harbor, in march 1942 I believe,. The Dutch navy operated about 15-20 submarines from DEI (O-Class, the most modern, and K-class boats).
After the defeat of the allied forces (ABDA command) in the Batlle of the Java Sea, most remaining navy ships and all sub's
@reemstrrr We were not invaded in 1945 but may 10th 1940. Japan attacked Indonesia in december 1941. We had 1 real tank and a few dozen armoured cars(which were a real pain in the ass for the Germans). The government tried to order tanks in Sweden. Landsverk L40? But it was to late. We had a pitiful air force. Only the Fokker G1 was up-to-date and a match for German fighters. we only had a few of them though. Only the navy was fairly good. Especially the submarines:).
... most navy ships and all sub's fled to Australia, where all remaining Dutch forces were re-assembled and continued their fight against Japan, alongside our allies.
Some ships were added from the left-overs of the Dutch navy in exile in England too. I know of one Dutch sub that made the American press because it went on and on sinking Japanese ships. The Dutch submariners had a very good reputation.
I am an avid WW II buff, and one of the many areas of interest are the Dutch armed forces, particularly their navy, and specifically, their submarine fleet, both K-class and O-class boats, both immaculate designs. How sad that the O-19 had to be dispatched by the USS Cod, but better that than to fall under Japanese hands....a most wonderful video on a little known fact of WW II. Thank you for posting!!!
The Dutch navy was always the best compared to the rest of the army. At the start of ww2 we had the worst army in our history. parts of our fleet were able to escape and fight on.
I just read about the reason why the O19 hit the reef. Ladd Reef was marked on the navigational charts as a tiny speck. The pencil line drawn across the charts plotting the ship's course covered up this "speck". As a result, nobody was aware of the reef even being there as an obstacle - boom!
This happened at 0400, so there was no way of telling the reef's shallow water from the surrounding sea in the pre-dawn darkness.
DID YOU KNOW: A while back, a tv show ranked the top ten best submarines ever built. The gato class, the USS Cod's class, came in 3rd place, surpassed only by the American Seawolf class and the Nazi German Type VII U-boat.
Those top ten lists are usually pretty much dominated by US and/or UK weaponry. That is because they don't know the true potential of the other weapons. I disregard them as propaganda. If we had had as many ships of the O-19 class or the O-21 class as the Americans had of the Gato class, I bet we'd be way up there too. Look at movie and you see a big rectangular slit in the bow: swiveling torpedo tubes. It was fitted with a snorkel before the Germans even experimented with them. Etc.
You know, some submarine names make sense, like Cod, Cavalla and Albacore. However, some sub names, I just dont get, I mean, why name a sub USS Wahoo (Im serious, at least one sub in this navy has been named "Wahoo")
I read a lot about dutch subs, they build good subs. The latest subs were very quiet, they were allmost finisht, ready for war, but then the germans came in 1939 and finisht them for their own purpose... Only a few new ones got pullid in the water and towed towards England and were finisht there.
and still the Dutch submarines are very good, also the trainining. US and Israeli and some other countries are sending there officiers in training for subs to the netherlands for there license. my uncle worked on a submarine in the late '60's and mid '70's he enjoyed it very much:)
They have this at Cleveland, right next to the rock and roll hall of fame, which is next to their science center, which happens to be right next to the Browns Stadium. It's a self guided tour, But I got to sit on that rotating gun which still works.
My grandfather served on the O-19 as well. I remember seeing pictures of the stranded sub as a kid, but nothing else. Thank you so much for sharing this!
Hey Friend, My grandfather Karl Van Dyk was on the O-19 as well. I remember him telling me stories of them hitting the reef. I'm gonna take a trip to Ladd reef one of these days.
My grandpa was Philip van der Veen. I unfortunately never knew him but am proud of his involvement in the war. I remember my brother used to have a little commemorative flag of the O19 in his room. I'd love to have it now.Let me know what you saw at Ladd Reef if you make it out there! :)
Thank you Colacas for uploading this video! This means a lot to me! In 2003 I asked the USS Cod for this partically film, because my granddad was one of the crewmembers of the O19. He passed away a couple of years ago, but during his live he told us about this rescue by the USS Cod. After they were dropped off in Australia, the O19 crew gave a Thank You party for their rescuefriend in Perth. That's why the USS Cod has a martini glass on their tower. What's the name of the documentary? Thanx!
I don´t rememember the exact title, it was an History Channel documentary about US submarines at ww2, maybe this programme "Silent Service, US Pacific Submarines"
Thank you very much for uploading this video! As a former Clevelander, I have a great interest in the USS Cod! Great contemporary footage. I hope that more Cod battle footage has survived and will find its way to life again!
btw It's not zero -19, the O is a letter not a number it stands for Onderzeeër (Dutch word for submarine) so O-19 stands for Onderzeeër 19 and not zero-19

I wonder if the Cod (I trained on her in the late 1960s as a Sea Cadet) is the only sub to have sunk an allied boat?

To keep the Japanese from salvaging and using the O-19 (or parts of it) against the allies.

@PitbullNL It was war time and they couldn't leave the sub and allow it to be found by the enemy, it had to be destroyed.
