he said if someone wants to be in love with him should love this one. so i'm gonna say i love this one. then would it be true to love him? apart from the personal note, this is marvelous. two thumbs up!
If you cant tell the difference between nelson and dave then some more homework needs to be done. The sound is different, not because they both have a raspy top end doesnt mean its the same.Technique is different thats a give.attack is different.and last is expression.
Sry, but I can't hear, what make this saxsolo more magic than others. For me a magic solo is one, that you want to hear again and again. There are many improvisations, that I heard one time and then I WANTED to transcribe them. This isn't one of them...
But I want to know, who was there first, Sanborn or Rangell. They look so much like the same :D (and also sounds a LITTLE bit equal, but not much)
I LOVE THIS SONG!! Thank you so much for posting this. I see Abraham Laboriel, Alex Acuna, the Grusins, Nelson Rangell. All great, all so gifted. GOD BLESS YOU FOR POSTING AND GOD BLESS ALL THESE ARTISTS.
Much more heart than the superb studio version on Dave's disc. Actually this one got me collecting Dave's stuff and naturally Don's followthrough. I hope no one gets offended, but Nelson shows a white boy can have soul too! Thanks so much dedoAndro. Peace
alex acuna on percussion, harvey mason on drums, dave grusin on rhodes piano, don grusin on grand piano, nelson rangell on sax, abraham laborielon bass....
Nelson Rangell is a pyro-technical master of the saxophone. His technique and melodic style of playing are incredible. He also makes great use of multiphonics in his playing. For me personally, he is like no other saxophone player that I listen to. He is hands down, my favorite saxophone player.
I see that there are some Michael Brecker videos on your page. I'll take a listen. Some of my favorite tenor sax players are Gato Barbieri, Lenny Pickett (when he was with Tower of Power), John Klemmer and Sadao Watanabe on any sax. Thanks!
I think it's Rit on the guitar. The original studio version is the one from 82; this video is from 2005. Some of the original personnel are around for this version of the song (Dave and Don, on piano and Rhodes respectively), as well as Lee Ritenour (guitar). The bass, percussionist and drummer are different though.
I've seen Nelson Rangell in concert and in person a few times in the past. The last time I saw him was on August 24, 2007 at Penn's Landing in Philly. I actually never had a chance to talk to him and I really wanted to! Next time I seen him, I will definitely do just that.
Lol at the end of Nelson's solo (03:37), look at Dave Grusin on piano : he looks like he has just woken up, with his expression "ha, I have to play now ? Well..."
Yeah, I've already listened to his piccolo & flute playing (Donna Lee version on you tube for example) and he's really great. He's one of my influences too, although I am trombone player.
everytime i listen to nelson rangell art of playing its like he drill my feelings towards he unique sounds that comes out in his horn simillar to david sanborn.
@JazzySaxE : YES!.. Of Course... That is the great Dave Grusin, Older brother of Don. Both of them sitting at the keyboards, Dave at the Reg. Piano (white hair) and Don on the electric piano.
Nelson Rangell > Kenny G(ay)

Big difference between Rangel and Sanborn, here, is Dave Grusin. I feel Sanborn has begun to "scream" too much.

Nelson is definitely influenced by the Big Dave.
But he has find himself a way of doing it.
I'd like him ... he remaind me of Sanborn when the big Dave was young.
Thanks again man !

Just a question because I'm French : in English, are Don and Dave the same ? If not, the correct name is DAVE Grusin not Don. THanks
