  • awesome fro....miss those damn 70's

  • Sahn-TAH-Nah

  • Musically; if Eric Clapton is "God," then Jeff Lynne is "The Archangel!"

  • So he drops the cello, (as any musican knows that would knock it out of tune), does he check his tuning? Even though we were label mates, (United Artist) these guys were often accused of lip syncing... must admit, loved all their albums...

  • @rockomatic100 Piss off

  • @rockomatic100 Maybe the instruments -- maybe -- but singing that sounds this sloppy (especially at the start of the vocals) isn't lip-synced, mate.

  • Who was the basist to the left of Jeff? He did some backup vocals etc...

  • ...As a bit of a TV historian, while Jeff was unsure at the time, this -was- the first time a laser light show had been performed on live US TV. A year earlier one act used two cheap green lasers bounced off the disco ball on American Bandstand, but as Dick Clark was no longer airing live by then, that didn't count. On a side note, RIP Kelly Grocutt. You're still missed, sir!

  • no wonder jeff always wears dark glasses. strange looking eyes!

  • Hey Mr. Lynne, RELAX, you did fine. By the way, your performance on the tune was fine too. Now, take a deep breath; there ya go.

  • Only one word can describe this live performance---WOW! Incredible band, and incredible musicians in general. I was always a huge fan of ELO. My Dad introduced me to their music in the mid 70's and I have most of their albums. Their incredible mix of classical with pop music is unrivaled. Absolute magic.

  • @dvnobles I agree ELO-II should have used a different name (not ELO) but disagree w/examples of other bands. Difference w/ ELO & bands mentioned (Foreigner, Journey, Styx) is those bands still had 1 or more primary song-writers in band. While all 3 singers contributed to song-writing, each band still had at least one original member who still wrote a bulk of music. In ELO it was ONLY Jeff writing/producing their music. For THAT reason, ELO-II should not have carried on with the ELO name

  • They got Strange Magic , if I can't get it out of my head , please Don't bring me Down & so take the Telephone Line ,, Do Ya !!!!!

    royal_man24@

  • @TheNoniebaloney srry that wasnt me im a girl and i dont like this stupid songs that was my grandpa

  • @lexi3570 ..... ok granddaughter ....... i accidentally used your name cause you didn't take it off when u were done using computer ....... and it's not stupid ........ gonna get a spanking for saying that ...... LOL ..... i mean ..... ELO!

  • no wonder he always wears Shades. He looks like a Pickled Pigs Foot.

  • Too... much... 70's.... to... handle...

  • lazerbeam show!

  • Just realized he looks like Jason Sudeikis

  • Jeff Lynne is pure genius...

  • BEV went out of HIS WAY to give me a drum stick in SEATTLE-THANK YOU BEV !!! SINCERELY KIM MASON

  • WOW .... this sounds great .... and it's all live ....... which was kind of a rarity in those days! ......... will always love that orchestral touch ELO, and other groups, provide to their fans!

  • @lexi3570 Hence the name Electric Light ORCHESTRA ....too bad indeed that there aren't any bands like this around now that are as popular as these guys... rock on ELO

  • Sounds so much better than the Zoom Live Tour version.

  • @Gentilseulement thats because Jeff Lynne did not realize that elo was not Just him and when he tried to be elo without his band (other that Richard T.) especially without (Kelly G. the "heart" of elo)(even though he used great musicians there was no " heart") he fell flat on his face, elo was Kelly G. and company not just Jeff L. and what Jeff L . did to Kelly G. at the end of elo was despicable I used to love Jeff L now he's just another selfish jackass.. who thinks to highly of himself

  • @mreloo I don't think him or Bev Bevan should have used the ELO name continuing on without what had been the "core" members, but what can you do...it happens all the time in the music business (journey, foreigner, styx, etc.) I didn't like it that he dropped Kelly G. either, but he did pull him in from playing in a club to sell-out crowds and only made 1 ELO album with the remaining members afterwards. In ELO II, Kelly G. actually went on to do more with ELO than Jeff did after his departure.

  • That's hilarious. The guy dropped the cello at the beginning. How stoned was he?

  • I was in love with Bev Bevan when I was younger. :)

  • lol @ 0:57...watch the bassist in the background XD

  • 2 people dont want his love!!!

  • And the after party was at the "Regal Beagle". LOL, and I wish I could have been there.

  • @DillingerSatchel No kidding! Just a small tad weird looking compared to the sunglasses look.

  • @DillingerSatchel No kidding! Just a small tad weird looking compared to the sunglasses look.

  • reply to DillingerSatchel Yes high histamine levels in your body give you watery swollen eyes not helped by strong lights sunlight and smoky atmospheres, not much you can do cept wear dark glasses, lots people have same problem, not much fun!!!

  • musical genius

  • Dig the rock chicks doin their best !!!

  • kelly always wears the same thing

  • I think a remastered version of this audio would make this my favorite live version of Do Ya. Jeff had the guitar in overdrive, and Richard's keyboard work (especially in the second verse where he basically supplies the string section) is excellent. At this point in their career, Out of the Blue was less than a year from dropping. I miss ELO.

  • the version from ace frehley is wow

  • the audio on this is awful, the way it pans left to right like that......

  • @x24mccoy I used to watch the Midnight Special every Friday night if they had bands that I liked. We didn't know the audio was crap, because no one had stereo TV's back then!

ELO appeared on the Midnight Special previously, but this was the first time they hosted the show. Bev Bevan played MC and did the intros for the rest of the show, because of Jeff Lynne's stage fright - he could perform, but he always had trouble talking to an audience.

  • @rusty57 Yeah, Jeff Lynne never was good at public speaking.

  • @no1elofaniknow who needs to be good at public speaking when you can sing and produce like he can in all fairness? :)

  • @RadaMcLaren32C True. Very true. But I was saying that Lynne needed to be good at public speaking; just replying re: rusty57's comment about Lynne's stage fright.

  • @no1elofaniknow Sorry. I meant to say "wasn't saying". :-)

  • @no1elofaniknow ...Jeff had stage fright issues in the early days when it came to speaking to the audiences. Bev, on the other hand, practically became the group's glad-hand at the concerts. Most felt that had Bev been with Jeff for the OGWT interview, Jeff wouldn't have come across like the jerk he did.

  • @no1elofaniknow weird...on a radio show with Bob Coburn he was introduced as a notable public speaker...I never understood that either, but he does pretty good in interviews anyway.

  • good song

  • I saw this on the Midnight Special in 1974, I was 12 years old, right then I knew I wanted to play guitar........

  • @DillingerSatchel Would you know his Fellow Wilbury Roy Orbison had Eyes?

  • Bev Bevan is so...pretty...

  • What are those things in Jeff?......there......are they eyes?

  • @pagliaccinodlemantra haha...yes, one of those rare minus sunglasses appearances

  • Wow, the original Windows Star Screen Saver, in the 70's.....

    Love the ELO music!

  • Ace simplified this song and nailed it. Sometimes over working a song doesn't make it better

  • OMFG!!! LAZORS!!!!

Hahahahaha!!! I love it. Jeff, you're EPIC! Wish I was there to see this show =)

  • Check out my novel based on this ELO album!

  • 1981: with 20.00 in my pocket i was suppose to buy myself a pair of 501 levis for school...instead bought my first album ever. E.L.O...I wore dickies for the rest of that year...good memories:)

  • hahahaha at 0:59 seconds you can see an upright bass quickly become a downright bass

  • @Jeff73ca cello

  • @no1elofaniknow you obviously missed the point of the joke.....

  • @Jeff73ca must have

  • @Jeff73ca it's a cello

  • @Jeff73ca It's actually a Cello, but otherwise yes. xD haha, good eye!

  • @Jeff73ca I believe that's a cello.

  • @DillingerSatchel LOL!! yes this is the first video I see him without shades..

  • ACE FREHLEY DID THEM JUSTICED. ACE SOUNDS LIKE JEFF LYNN

  • @KENNYKISS69 Surely, you jest?

  • @KENNYKISS69 yes but Ace will NEVER have an afro like that :)

  • ELO part2- then the Orchestra after Jeff threatened law suit.

  • what's with the solid white dancers up front?

  • i love Jeff's hair!

  • Love Jeff's fro. Saw ELO in the 80's great show, I think some of the band reformed into another band in the 90s. Anybody know?

  • @Goju4u2 That would be ELO Part II, which Jeff Lynne was not a part of.

  • Ich erinnere mich...teen-zeit-erste Liebe-Disco-wache-Nächte...und ELO war immer dabei...schön!!!!

  • JEFF SAID suntana LOVE THE ACCENT LOL !!!! NEW JEFF LYNNE ALBUM OUT AROUND JUNE 2011 <3

  • (Y)

  • hell yeah! layzurz

  • check out lynns version with the move...

  • @markwoodnyusa Not as good, in opinion.

  • The hallmark of this great song was the SLIDE guitar. To not have it in a live version is a CRIME!

  • @82pjs It wasn't recorded with a slide guitar. Jeff Lynne did the "slide" with a guitar pick going up the guitar neck. Not in this video, but in some others he does.

  • thanks, great vid

  • did that guy drop his cello at :58?

my cello would hate me if i did that..

  • @inputmodule Saw Yo Yo Ma on Monday he 4 sure did not drop his ;)

  • @Goju4u2 Yeah, but I bet Yo Yo can't rock it like Hughie can! ;-D

  • @inputmodule I bet your cello doesn't explode

    .

  • this version kicks ass!

  • Laser beams!

    Yes!

  • This has to be one of the best bridges in rock music.

  • @Buglebogue Jeff Lynn Bridges?

  • Ohh shit the violinist at 0:57

  • The people in the crowd are acting stupid

  • @composingjealousy Dancing is stupid?

  • @no1elofaniknow No! but look HOW they are dancing... so... ughh

  • @composingjealousy That's pretty much how casual dancers danced in the 70's.

  • @no1elofaniknow oooooooooooh.... ok lol well thanks for telling me :)

  • Bev Bevan wishing Jeff can suck him off

  • JEFF LOOKS SO CUTE

  • @Marion133 Jeff IS cute! Love the fro!

  • @funkychick60 I know! I love it!

  • after listening to this song,I immediately bought it on itunes :)

  • 2:40 One of the most beautiful musical interludes in Rock 'n Roll....Absolutely riveting!!

I think this song has a lot of influences from The Who....What do you guys think?

  • Awesome video, thank you!

  • no autotune here....most new music is autotune....give me the classics any day....

  • Isn't it nice to hear real music?

  • Do Ya was like number 14 on the charts when this aired. I think the next single released was Telephone line which was still doing good on the Charts when Turn to Stone and Out of the blue came out. Non-stop ELO there for a few magic years.

  • That hairstyle sucks, but the music is sooo great !

  • @tantemanfred i love Jeff's hair

  • bring's back a lot of good time memory's"the girl's" Oooowheee

  • @DillingerSatchel Really! haha, makes me wonder what he's hiding beneath that hair/beard combo.....Has anyone ever seen him without his beard at least!? xD

  • @NezMaccaHam Yes, I have. Clean-shaven, he looked, um... different.

  • @DillingerSatchel Lol...nice one! This clip is a treasure.

  • I saw this the night it aired. It was great!

  • i wonder if Jeff told Bev to make that intro...

  • @renues why?

  • It is so weird to see Jeff Lynne without his sunglasses

  • Bev "Beverage" Bevan

  • They slaughtered.

  • The lasers DO look cool!!! That was a long time ago.

  • Dont you guys feel sorry for the teens today not having stuff like this? Oh we had it so good!

  • @Vindicator58 Yes, that's a really good point. We grew up with so many great bands... even the mediocre bands were fantastic.

  • @Vindicator58 Yeah you guys were lucky

  • Love this. The Move version is still the best.

  • @flashfast2000 I disagree. The Move version, IMO, sounds more like a trial run. I think even Jeff (who wrote Do Ya) realized that the song wasn't quite what it could have been. I think he perfected it the second time around in 1976. Just my humble opinion.

  • @no1elofaniknow I dig your opinion. I just prefer the edgy earlier version. Still love everything ELO.

  • Aren't they great huh ?!?!??

Bev is shy like a teenage boy!! And Jeff, what can I say...ELO ROCKS!!!!

I thank U-Jostoc, for making my day an awesome one !!

  • back when music was actually music! oh good days!

  • Jeff Lynne without his sunglasses...wow

  • Jeff Lynne what an incredible talent

  • Holy crap I love this band!

  • Amazing

  • love that crunching guitar sound that jeff gets out of his goldtop at 3:25

  • @idlerace1 LOL! "Hello there! I'm Jeff Lynne! Would you prefer twangy or crunchy??" LOL! That Goldtop was a huge part of his trademark.

  • I just love the way Jeff Lynne says, "Hello there."

  • I just love the way Jeff Lynne says, "Hello there."

  • @no1elofaniknow of course i beleiveyou...and i was shocked a little: although i'm coming fom a music "college" (!)

  • LOL! Kelly (bass) at 1:26! WHAT in the WORLD?! LOL

  • Jeff Lynne's hair was extra high in this video. LOL

  • i like ELO for this "classical music" feeling in every song of them...i think jeff lynn is an educated musician and can't leave the influnence of the great masters at all!

  • @peymandavoudi Believe it or not, Jeff Lynne is a self-taught musician. He dropped out of school at age 15. In the early days of ELO, after they had hired the string players, Jeff one day asked one of them, "So you went to COLLEGE to learn how to play music?"

  • @no1elofaniknow Ohh shit. Are you serious? Where did he say that? I always knew he droped out of school but i just thought that. Didn't know it was true...

  • @composingjealousy It was in an online biography (not Wikipedia) of Jeff Lynne. Sorry, can't remember what website, as it's been quite some time ago.

  • @no1elofaniknow Ah, I see. Thats cool. Go Jeff! lmao

  • really cool - very good for live TV in 70s. Fun to see nobody wants to sing the high lead on "Do Ya"! Not so unusual, I guess, eg. Robert Plant skipped most of his high notes live in concert. So Orbison wins!

  • i think this song sounds like Fox On The Run By sweet, and i crazy or dose somebody else think so to

  • @Rickberg1966 Do Ya came way before Fox On The Run. So, I guess Fox On The Run sounds like Do Ya.

  • I think the cello play might be a little wasted! He nearly dropped it again at 2:52. lol

    Great video and song though!!!

  • ELO on the MIdnight Special. Is there anything better?

  • I have always wondered where did Jeff find his amazing talent ? He was before the Idle Race time guite a normal guy. The very first good song Imposters of Life´s Magazine in 1967 but nothing special before that. But after that almost all brilliant.

  • another good performance live, wat good musos, cheers.

  • ELO is fucking awesome!

  • awsome

  • Jeff Lynne and Lindsey Buckingham look alike with the whole fro and goatee thing going on.

  • hanakoa12 yeah i really did'nt think of that pink floyd would have been just ending their wish you were here tour & going on to the animals album!! i have pinkfloyd & elo on vinyl record!!

  • Did anybody else see the guy drop his upright bass during the beggining of "do ya"?it's kinda funny lol :D look to the left and you can see him lol

  • Sorry to dissapoint you Frehley, it's not an upright bass, it's just a cello with the peg all the way out. And he meant to let it drop, just part of the act, he does it in other videos of ELO as well :)

  • saw them live in tokyo in feb 1978 and the laser beams blew my mind!

  • Lucky MOFO :) I live in TOKYO now, guess theres no chance of them coming again HAHAHA

  • ELO, I love so much

  • Yes, yes, yes, and yes! Awesomeness!=) giggle giggle.

  • very simple if ya compair to todays laser shows!! ground breakin! but where were pink floyd at this time!?

  • @killcraz

Pink Floyd would have been well established by this point. I mean come on, Dark Side of the Moon was already released.

  • @@===** oh the 70s ********** @@===**

  • Bev also played drums on the Mob Rules tour for Black Sabbath back in 83. And Ian Gillan of Deep Purple was the lead singer as well.

  • Born Again tour. Vinnie Appice played on the Mob Rules tour (including on the album from the tour "Live Evil").

  • ELO sold well over 100 million records worldwide.

27 Top 40 hit single appearances in both the UK US

They hold the record for having the most Billboard Hot 100 Top 40 hits of any band in US chart history without ever having a #1 single.
