I love our garden. My potatoes doing great. Can't wait until I harvest them in October. My onions growing nicely. so does my corn What I have a hard time growing is green beans, and peppers. Why I do not know? Everything I grow is organic.
How are the bankers keeping me from planting? Why was that pointed at me? The government may need to get out of everything overseas and cut off the bankers and stop giving away "stimulus" money....but that has nothing to do with my ability to plant my garden....
I had a great garden going till the racoons (7) got in one night and stripped everything. I rather sit on my ass and rail dope all day. Way too much work taking care of all that produce. Are you using the goats just for milk or also meat. Congrats. I was special ops in the Marines. If you need security in exchange for food pm me.
@napalmsirius Just looking at the site from an op's perspective, the place is not defensible in it's present configuration. Take out the sniper they will have perched under the freeway and the farm is yours. Bad location.
Start with what you have, thank you so much for that! We are going to have a little bigger garden this year than last and after seeing this I think we can do more with less! Inspiring!
The best thing would be for real Americans to kick out the foreign bankers, cut off all aid to israel and the other middle east nations and have Americans become a true friend to the world. Then everyone can plant as many crops they want...
Excellent work! My only question is how you get your water. I would hope you have a well, or perhaps a rain collection system. I know you guys in California have to deal with strict regulations, so I don't ask this to be judgmental.
It's a valid question, if many city folk got on board the "homegrown revolution", water shortages would be abound - regulations would be introduced - taxes would be imposed - The FDA and Monsanto would get involved and poof! it would be gone. I do admire these people, but let's not loose sight of the fact that urban sprawl that has decimated good agricultural land around our cities without any regard for the potential value in the agricultural aspect.
@puppetjaw That's why urban farming is a great way to put that good agricultural land back into production. As for water - it falls from the sky for free. You just have to collect and make use of it. One roof can collect a LOT of water if you have a decent size tank!
Everyone should know that the Dervaes family are complete phonies & greedy hypocrites. They are in fact a CORPORATION that has copyrighted the term "Urban Homestead" (a phrase that has been in public use for 30 years) and is now cracking down on small-time farmers, educators and bloggers who have been using the term for years, shutting down websites and facebook pages in order to protect "their" intellectual property. They are reviled amongst the community they claim to represent.
I hear from other people that blog about growing their own greens that you "the Dervae's" are trying to PATENT the WORDS: path to freedom, urban sustainability, etc. because you feel you want credit for it. I heard you have mailed out letters telling others to take down their videos or blogs, whatever, if they don't mention you, the Dervae's, to credit you onto it. Why would you do this? please respond with a video on your side of the story as well.
I tried growing a small garden, couldnt keep the rabbits and prarie dogs out (in arizona). If I had the money to build such a beautiful garden place I would do it in a second. I am on an acre, but I also have a septic tank and drain field (dont know exactly where the drain field is lol). With water being an issue also, I find it just as important to learn the edible wild foods around you! You really dont have to grow anything!
That's impressive. I wonder how they find the time? I mean with a job and all to pay the bills. I am kind of curious how they started out as well. Because obviously you can't just go... Oh! Gonna quit my job and start gardening full time, because the bills will continue to roll in.
@MRSketch09 Well - to begin with get yourself debt free - debt is the worst form of slavery. Then you could go part time - say 2-4 days per week paid work and devote the rest to building your garden, as long as you have some income to pay the bills in the meantime. Then, as you become more self-sufficient, reduce your paid employment accordingly, and also look for alternative ways to earn an income. I'm sure most people could live well with 1-3 days employment + a great productive garden!
Good for you. Your doing everything I want to do. I am almost there. I heat my house with an outside wood burning furnace, we have over 26 egg laying chickens and this is my second year with the garden. Bee's and goats are our next goal within the next year. I'm impressed with what you've done on a 1/10 of an acre. I have 1 acre, so I can only imagine what we can do with it. Keep it going, we'll need to learn all the skills we can for sure.
@Enderschoice l believe that they let some of their produce go to seed for next year, they use rainwater catch systems to help with the water bill and use no pesticides...so all in all just a small lump sum to start and after that relatively self sustained
They may have started small, but for some of us that can afford it, we can just go all out and plan and build in our back lots. I'm inspired! Wonder if their film starts from the begining?
Fuck codex. Try and tell me I can't grow a garden now? What's next? Are they going to block the sun? Oh yeah, they are doing it right now with chemtrails, i forgot. WAKE UP MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS!
However, how much money did (does) it cost to actually do this? For example, solar panels are by no means cheap, converting trucks to biodiesel is also not cheap. Buying animals isn't cheap. The point is, how can inner city communities (or families), primarily of color, pull this off themselves?
It seems to require a lot of money (and wealth, e.g. land) lots of people do not have.
I think you make a valid point. Some of this will be out of the reach of most people, however Americans spend overall LESS income on their food than other countries. And the food we are buying is overly-processed junk that doesn't resemble anything in nature. Inner-city communities can join a co-op or start a community garden. You're right, tho, it is a problem.
They didn't start with all that. First they tore out the grass in front of their house and started growing a very small garden. What you see now is the result of years and years of work. I live in a condo and have lettuce, tomatoes and peppers growing in pots in front of our condo. Start with what you have.
Hmm, They don't seem to respond to their comments here so I'll just throw this one out to anyone.
I love what they're doing but a big part of their income is from selling produce to restaurants. Nowadays restaurants are going out of business right and left in California due to the economic collapse. I wonder how they're going to pay their property tax when that income source drops away. I hope they find a solution.
Yeah, and IF & when HR 875 passes.. their business will be history, due to the requiremnts, such as licensing, inspections, etc., etc. etc. that HR 875 will create for them (and perhaps anyone else growing a garden at home?). Sad.. the gov't is determined to legislate us all out of even our food sources, huh?
They will have to work elsewhere to pay the property taxes, but I am sure they will be able to grow their own food on their property. As long as they are not selling their food, I think that they can still barter food for what they need and preserve their own.
Very inspirational, I have a big yard and 52 acers in Tennessee. Our rainfall has been decreasing for the past few years and I love your water conservation and usage for irrigation. My winters are colder than yours but I am considering a green house to extend my growing season.
PS. If I was 20 years younger I would grab one of them cute daughters of yours, they could teach me all I need to know LOL
I admire the Dervaes family for the fantastic example they are giving.
