you've seen better footage from the 7D? 7D is not even worth mentioning in the same sentence with the Red one. Obviously this footage was not properly rendered, thats why is so crappy.
Are we honestly still having the HD vs. film debate? I remember having a similar 'debate' over ProTools vs. analog or Avid vs. flatbed editing 10 years ago... the FACT is that the people at home don't know the difference. Bottom line.
It comes down to glass... I've seen film look terrible with bad optics, same thing with HD. Watch "Collateral" if the 'purists' want to bash the format.
Personally, I want to shoot at 1/10th the price and have the footage instantly... but call me crazy ;)
Well the new iMac screen res is higher that full HD, so I guess you best option is either buy an Imax theatre or get on of those. Are there LCD screens out there (besides the new iMacs) that are higher that 1920x1080? I know that there should be, but I just havnt seen any.
I can afford to use a RED or two for budgets that 35mm would not even get up in the morning for!.....and it looks great and I can film my story....... end of discussion!
What people FAIL TO REALIZE AND UNDERSTAND is that it shouldn't be DIGITAL vs FILM. It's whatever best suits the project you're working on. If digital is going to help you achieve your vision better than film, than use it. If film will, then use film. The point is that the options are there. STOP SAYING DIGITAL OR FILM IS BETTER THAN ONE OR THE OTHER THEY ARE TWO SEPARATE THINGS
I'm intrigued, Kubrick, and you seem to have a handle on this a bit. I notice the low quality digital movement too, and wonder if it is just me. It looks... well... digitized or something. Just weird. What I am wondering is, if in fact you were to take RED footage 4k, and then print that onto 65mm film somehow, would it obtain that organic look? Would it look better watching it actually transferred onto film?
Many movies are now scanning their film and working on it digitally. When they scan it in it is usually only at 2k resolution (unless it is in imax, then it is anywhere from 5-8k). After post it is then printed back on film. I have seen a bunch of movies shot completely with RED and movies shot only in part and you cannot tell the difference. If the film is never tampered with it may be better than RED but when you introduce those steps its indistinguishable.
Digital still has nothing on film in terms of image quality. That said, most consumers aren't fussy about image quality to begin with, and digital certainly has a practical and economical advantage.
A digital format has more pixels per inch than film you say? No shit.
There isn't a digital camera on the market capable of capturing an image of quality comparable to 65mm or imax. Soon there will be, and yeah, within the next 5 years or so film is going to die off, even if just for economic reasons.
At the moment, no digital motion picture camera can equal film. No, I don't think film is here to stay, and yes, I'm sure pretty soon digital will equal or surpass film in image quality.
Film is on it's last leg. It still has about five yrs to go but when Film studio's are able to cut cost and have a quality better than film and the theaters will have to make the theater experience better and still be cost efficent bcuz of the bootleggers cutting into their profits, film will be all but dead. Just like most photogs use digital now as opposed to film when many resisted early on!
yeah video is a decade or so behind music... it will spread to everyone and there will be a huge influx of people doing video (well this has already happened).. but it will be serious video.. movies, documentaries, etc.. what happened with music is the market got flooded with low quality stuff, but it also allows some really talented people to shine, so it can hurt and help at the same time.. it's a definite epoch shift
Lol, your comment shouldn't have gotten a thumbs-down. I can't believe how many people don't understand the obvious advantages of digital cinema over film.
True, CONSUMER digital VIDEO still has a ways to go (yet it's already better than consumer film), but professional DIGITAL CINEMA is far ahead of film.
Have you had any issues editing the Red Camera? Do you think editing a feature on CS4 with the Red Plug-in would be a stretch? What type pf raid do you suggest?
Even if they stop using it to film movies in the future. Movie companies have absolutely no interest in displaying movies in the theater on any type of digital format "cough *piracy* cough"
thats 1 reason
Secondly, film is still better than digital and will be for at least another 10 years.
Film has a much higher dynamic range, its great for long term storage, it has a unique color, and texture. the cameras them selves last forever.
You could not be more incorrect. The new theaters here in KC have the new 4k projectors, all digital sound systems, etc. This also resolves asset management issues with film, masters, etc. It's here. It's the future, and it is cheaper to own and operate on the theater's side.
yes but i suppose that an indie cinema in the middle of nowhere is gonna buy one of these. but that being said only time will tell what the future will be
heres a reason: vx1000s look amazing not because they're neccesarily "better" than other cameras (which they are) but for certain things like skateboarding for instance, there is absolutely no better camera no matter the resolution or colors. because in my opinion any change made to the vx1000 is a bad change. thats why some people will always be more stoked on film, im not saying digital looks bad i just like film way more.
Film will always be around because of the process. I don't doubt that digital will be the dominant medium within the next ten years; but film will ALWAYS be around. It's just like still photography... using HRD in digital tech actually surpasses the tonal range of film; but a lot of high end photographers still use film because of the whole process from developing to dark room technique. So... i guess there's one reason for ya.
I just wonder what happens when those celluloid romantics die off. Digital will be able to do everything film can do, plus much more, and at a fraction of the time and price. Film will be extinct in mainstream cinema. Without that market I just don't see how it can stay around forever. Do we still listen to phonographs?
Yeah-that's true. I guess what I hope to get from the whole situation is the possibility of people(aka-not Hollywood) being able to produce something. I think we're seeing this in music - people can create a music studio and record music and get it out to listeners via digital for less than $10k whereas only those with $500k+ could do that just 30 years ago. I kind of hope we'll see more cinema "art" being created now that high quality equipment is available at a fraction of the cost
But yeah; I do think for the most part digital will replace film and it will be sad to see it go. Even though I never truly got to experience the art world while film still dominated I can at least see the benefits of working with physical negatives. I hope that no matter how dominant digital becomes well at least have a couple specialized companies in the world still producing and working with film.
Why on earth would you upload this at 240p? It's beautiful footage... I think.

Yeah, because we all have $200,000 dollars to process our feature length movies in 35mm.
Why bother with film when they're just going to scan it in 2K anyway?

True, the footage between film and 4k RED footage may be indistinguishable, but that's exactly why the RED is better.
Film-based cinema cameras are priced at $100,000+, while the RED costs between $17,000 to $50,000 depending on how you customize it.
Plus, digital media doesn't need to be converted for digital post-production to take place (obviously); digitizing cinema film is quite expensive.

Pro digtal is already higher DPI, color quality, and overall post-processing potential. Arri just wants your monies.
