they blast cars from a cannon fixed underneath, which propels the car, and then the steel rope is there, to guide the car so it stays in shot, once it's filmed, unless you have got a spare Astra, its a done deal and the ropes stay. The car isn't being pulled or towed into the water though as it may appear.
