  • Rene Frogers voice has the drama that fit's beautyful to the lyrics! Better than the original.

  • Brilliant Song, Real Music. :)

  • beautifull song!! good job!!

  • ...January-1988 Amsterdam....chef-ing round feeling cold for America...nirvana by every canal...youth and smoke.

  • So this is what the rich is. Running away from the cold to places like Palm bay to the soul lost of all we have lost. To seek haven to this atomic loss us. Where do we ask the Questions. Where do we surrender our self's. Where do these riches enrich us and where do we fair. To the Question The Question of the cruel Winter

  • @geiadude the story of this song is an aussie fella talking about his relationship with a yanky sheila

  • In a world that can be banal, difficult and frustrating some songs remind you that the sweetest thing to do is to share a memory with yourself, this song evokes some of best..

  • life can be better if you want just smile and be a better and nicer person to everyone you meet.....a smile makes the difference it opens many doors.....and hearts....

  • I was listening to Gil Scott Heron's track of the same name when I came across this. Glad I did..it's brilliant!!

  • A timeless song written by an australian ,another love song from the past ,forever young.

  • I was born in 1958 and I think it's a musical privilege to have grown up in the 60s, 70s, 80s (I was still growing up then, ha!) and to know beauts like this one from way back when. I know exactly where I was and how I adored it: Rijswijk, The Netherlands, ad infinitum. The title popped up somewhere else on youtube and of course I had to instantly listen to it! Thanks to everyone for putting all this wealth on the 'tube! Eternally grateful...

  • @NovaScotiaChick I was born in 90, so I was not given this privilege, but thankfully I found my way to these types of music anyway... :)

  • It is so beautiful song. I still have this song on CD that I bought in 1994. Timeless....

  • pure ozie class

  • pure ozie class

  • On the original Doug Ashdown album, this track was titled " leave love enough alone", was released as a single and was totally ignored. Then Doug re-released it as "Winter in America" and the rest is history. Even Demis Rousos has a version of it!

  • i love that intrusive "r'!

  • @Bobberdolf Haha, inderdaad zeg, geweldig!

  • Awesome slide-show!

The perfect partner for such a beautiful old favourite of mine.

Oh yeah - they just don't write them like this anymore.

    Still tugs at the heartstrings....

  • I also love this song....

  • Oops...expected-Gil Scott Heron-

    Winter in America -

However this is a lovely detour-

    Thanks for posting...

    ;0)

  • Wat wordt bedoeld met Original? Het liedje blijft mooi.

  • @dorhout

  • I'll never forget you and your familie! I never realise what Nam meens to you! First snow after 3 years Vietnam! Good luck!

  • Beautifull song! Remember Frank who left Vietnam in 1976 and returned to the

States! This song makes me sad!

Het spijt me zo!

  • This song was not written by Doug Ashdown......how do I know this? My deceased husband wrote this song and sold it to Doug Ashdown for $125!!!! and it went on to make a mint ......the americans changed the name of the song.....the song is about me......believe it or not....this is a true story!

  • @swannieist - I'm gonna have to check the credit on the album now...

  • @JBofBrisbane and what did it say?

  • @JBofBrisbane The lyrics, music or both are made by your late husband?

  • @swannieist You bloody liar

  • @swannieist

Do you still have the original demo tape? Would be fun to hear the original on Youtube :-)

  • This is a great song....the problem is it was not written by Doug Ashdown!!!! It was written by my deceased husband here in Australia.....he sold it to Doug Ashdown for $125......this is a true story......the original song was changed by the americans....to make it appeal to the USA market they renamed it Winter in America. How do I know all this.....the song is about me!

  • Really????? That's amazing!

  • @swannieist who the fuck are you!! WINTER IN AUSTRALIA IS COLD - hardly - hahahah. so what was it called before the Americans changed it?? How can the song be about you - the song indicates a break up - so I gather you got back together with your husband?

  • @annahathis1 If someone wants to find out something they usually use polite words.....so if you are really interested be nice and I may tell you!

  • @annahathis1 Er, yes. Winter In America was written by Doug Ashdown, an Australian. I guess he like the ring of America instead of Australia. We have a larger Alpine area than Europe and can get very heavy snow up there, thus the skiing. No, really.

  • So beautiful there are no words.

    Thanx for posting.

  • this song has a kind of magic I think!.

    it's so beautiful.

  • Funny all this time I assumed it was called Winter In America. It is titled "leave Love Enough Alone according to the Itunes track listing for the album titled "Winter in America". Still it's likely the yanks for some reason wanted the title changed! Great aussie song, timeless!

  • Epic music

  • u should listen to demis roussos's version :D its touchy n his voice :)

  • Winter in Holland is pretty cold as wel..

  • "Used to be pretty cold" you mean. Apart from last winter I have to go back in time quite a number of years in my memories for a truly old-fashioned cold winter. As I would say: save the earth, stop farting.

  • Yesterday I ate lots of topinamboer. You don't wanna know how much that affects our climate.

  • Correct, I have no real clue on that and maybe it's better not to know. But I feel quite uncomfortable about it. Btw I noticed some smell outside today, all over town, and it was probably even all over the country. Was that you?

  • Bad luck. I slept with open window.

  • i love doug ashdowns version

  • He wrote it. Rene Froger and others have since covered it, but I agree, Ashdown's is the best. Today, he lives here in Adelaide and is scratching to make ends meet. Last heard of, performing this at the Cygnet (pop 800) Folk Festival. So sad. :(

  • i just love this song its really beautiful

    ty for the info

  • Is it just me or does the drummer have echoes of Ringo?

  • no wonder my heart remains frozen...

i keep meeting the ice queens...

  • I backed Doug when he did a show in Broken Hill Civic Centre back in the 1980's. Ha never forgot him.

  • I love this song so much i really have to see this guy one day when i am in Australia again thank you so much dough

  • veel beter dan die kakker van Froger

  • @FOUR3REDLIGHTS

Veel me echt zwaar tegen.

  • This is wonderful I love his voice. If anyone has Doug's rendition of "And the band played Waltzing Matilda", would they please post it. Such a good version of a good song

  • Thanks for sharing. Doug performs with Mike McClellan occassionally and they complement each other beautifuly. If anyone has Mike's Song and Dance Man post it please.

  • This is a beautiful song with lovely words but boy does it play with your emotions!!!

    Thanks for the post!

  • The opening line really evokes the image of Sydney Harbour on a perfect summer's morning. I can almost smell the frangipani!

  • Love it!!!

  • lekker hoor

  • I was waiting for this song for years. Now i found it! Great!

  • Me either ...!!It gives me THE winterfeeling!!

  • i am now in Tulsa,Oklahoma getting ready to leave to the Netherlands after the man i love broke up with me!winter in america is cold this great song says it all! very beautiful, but very sad!

  • absolutely beautiful both the song and the pics.thanks for posting!

  • I couldn't listen to this song too many times because this is deeply depressing and sad. As haunting as it is, its beautiful lyrics are touching.

  • Who is singing this? I know an Australian named Doug Ashdown wrote it back in the 70s.

  • Its Doug singing it.

  • "I awake into the sadness of the rain, and making love to strangers" - soooooooo depressing but I LOVE this song. It really pulls on the heartstrings.

  • Realmente bonita este cancao!

  • simply beautiful. Haunting and melancholy, sad, sweet refrain

  • Does anyone knows witch year this good song is ?

  • i am fairly sure its 1977

  • This is the first I have heard this song since it was in the charts. It moves me and reduces me to tears as easily as the first hearing. It's my heart that has opened up to kiss the salty air.

  • I love this song... it reminds me of being a kid growing up in the 70's. My folks used to play this on high rotation. Just beautiful!

  • same here.

    shivers down my spine :o)

  • This song has the right atmosphere of winter times. It is a absolutely brilliant song.

  • Thank you so much for this. I have the single gathering dust in the loft. So happy to hear this again.

  • So love Doug Ashdown's song. Sydney summer: frangipani, cricket, the Beach and Festival of Sydney. '76 was a very good year too. Thank you.

  • Y'know the good thing about this song? You could actually sing along with it!

  • The wheels on the bus go round and round all day long.Goodnight Bobby

  • Gosh just looking around, I see this is a really valuable upload. Thanks a lot!!

  • When this song came out it was in our winter around june 1976 here in australia and it was one of the coldest winters we had, listening to this song now does send a chill down my spine, that's despite the fact that is an unforgettable song in a positive way of course!!!

  • One of the greatest Australian songs ever.

Certainly one of my top 5. Written by Doug Ashdown whist writing songs in the US.

The first verse evokes Sydeny in summer like no other song.

    Thank you for posting

  • Had no idea he was Australian.

No wonder I could relate at such an early age. Yep, it's a fantastic song.

  • He lives in Adelaide.

  • He's playing live around the country lately. I've seen him performing in Tassie and the Blue Mountains this year. Still good

  • great,,, thanx im happy to hear this again and i send it to some one now... xxx from holland

  • when i here this song at the moment i think about florence my girl and me....Love Florence...!!!!!!?
