im real excited for this ensemble this year! half of my percussion is playing this and in excited. im playing marimba 2(solo at D). I hope we can get it as good yours! This i s awesome guys!!
The girl it zoomed on in the beggining, when you play that part around 2:15, your left hand was floating way higher than your right. I know the left has a lot of time up there but its kind of too high. I enjoyed listening to this a lot though :)
Let me say again I thought you guys played and sounded excellent, so I hope nobody takes offense at my negative view of the arrangement. I guess I have strong opinions on it having worked with the piece so much, and it being one of my all-time favorites.
Hey, you guys did really great! Nice to see so many 4 mallets players at the HS level. I liked the sax addition too.
While your performance was excellent, I just can't stand this arrangement at all. Olin Johannsen really butchered a beautiful, flowing piece into this silly hoedown. Where do I begin. He totally screwed up the time signature changes constantly, which changes the feel of the piece. He didn't have bass notes during the bass solo, so it sounds empty.
There's that out of place bells part in thirds that he made up going back into the chorus, and the ending is also totally made up and silly, when the original ending is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. So why would he replace it with a hoedown end?
'The only reason why I say all this is to encourage you and your ensemble to def check out the original. There's a live version on Youtube, which is ok, but the one on the Left of Cool album is musical genius. Have you heard it?
