it really annoys me when people comment on stuff that they know absolutely squat about; music is not all about ego and from a guitarists point of view, it's not just about solos - maybe you're all watching too much of Simons Cowelle's flabby paps. There's a great tutorial on here from andy and if you watch it you'll get the idea of the influences he brings including the richness and variety of chords inversions and style and what that brought to the Police. I'm going away to beat my kids now.
"Henry Padovani is the new guitarist. he only knows a few chords, but boy does he look cool in those leather pants" P.241, stings autobiography
"henry has the right image. Henry can't play" ebd. P.272
"Andy blows us all away. He is clearly a fine musician, a master of many musical styles and techniques. This is the kind of musician i could write for, who could inspire me, who could realize the music in my head, this is exactly the kind of musician that the police need" ebd.
Andy`s guitar work may be easy to cop if your a beginner guitarist, with a little bit of knowledge in minor chords ,but the truth is most of the great songs of rock-pop are 'easy' to play just for that reason ,(easy to play but sounds great is how you know its art and not just crapola) it is called 'art' and thats the difference between a creative guitarist like Andy and a guitar hack like Vai or Satriani who had to learn Andy`s licks while in guitar school, lol,
are you kidding? Listen closely to his note selection in this solo... very cool choice of contrasting scales.. he may not be the greatest but he is far from horrible.

Playing This song would be super tight without the guitar player, who seems to be blessed with no sense of rhythm. I grew up reading guitar mags with Andy Summers is so this and that, but to be honest he drags the band down. Soloing up and down a diminished pattern isn't tasteful or original, it's amateurish. The guitarist from Blink 182 has a signature Fender, so that is obviously not an indication of talent. He is a third-rate guitarist, I should know - I am one.
dude you're kidding. Andy Summers has got to be one of the best ever rhythm players. He's amazing on so many levels. I don't know how much live gigging experience you've had but monitor feed and the venue and other variables does also effect your playing and what you hear.
Andy summers is an awesome guitarist, full of inspiration, even if he's not as good as Mark knopfler for technical parts. To shut up those who think differently, Fender sales a Telecaster signature "Andy Summers". But without Sting and Steward, even if you play good, you'll fell "so lonely".
I don't agree with you. Andy Summers is a very accomplished and certainly more technical than Knopfler. Summers was a veteran jazz player before a rocker and played so many different styles. I love both these guys styles but Knopfler would be the first to agree I'm sure that Summers has mastered many styles. Mark's style is very much country blues, Chet Atkins that sort of thing.
Summers is amazing but clearly he's using a delay pattern he's not used to because the timing goes off a few times, also stfu and observe the greatness
first Andy was in the animals-he turned down Mick Jagger to be in the Rolling Stones-Mick took Ron Wood from the Faces the POLICE RULE and you should do your homework before you badmouth a band like the police-I don't see your fuckin' band on you tube-If you thought Andy was such a bad guitarist, why are you watching the videos? i think your just jealous because you have a small penis and you don't have a girlfriend
Actual tour is very Great!Saw them in Amsterdam 14 sept, was so nice !!and again next SDF in PARIS.... BUT REALLY MISS : " BRING ON THE NIGHT " with andy' solo (remember gateshad 1982). PLEASE ADD !! and why the suppress of "BED TOO BIG WITHOUT YOU" in the européan tour???? WAS SO GOOD !! AGAIN PLEASE!!
This clip is awesome! After seeing it originally on VH1 Classic, I've watched this countless times. I just got back from their show in Las Vegas (7/15) and there were no problems, it was the highlight of the trip! Sting doesn't sound like he's lost anything vocally, and I thought they all looked like they were having a lot of fun together. Simply awesome! Long live The Police!!
I was at the Vegas show too. They put on a killer performance! The version of So Lonely they did on 6/15 was in a different key than the original recording, but it sounded just as firey and energetic as the original.
I forgot to say Thank You to maxider for posting this video, this is the best version of this song i've ever heard. I must have listened to it about 20 times by now Thanks maxider
Tank you PoliceLover for appreciation this video. I also have a great version of this song on a bootleg called "For Few Ones!" recorded in New York from the first tour in usa.
No, that can't happen...can it? What's the overall mood of the band at these new shows? Did Sting actually get "too Sting" or did he just screw up musically and was humble about it? Mistakes are fine; but attitude after denying the public for 20 years is not cool. This is a 34-year-old talking who has never seen The Police live...YET.
I also live in D.C. where The Police HAVE NOT SET A FREAKING TOUR DATE YET (Virgin Festival sucks and will not count by my standards). I want The Police alone in the Phone Booth (Verizon Center) for three hours...not sharing the stage with the stupid ass Beastie Boys to play five songs and then leave.
I do have Police tix for Philly, Hershey, and MSG1; but I just bet they will cancel the 2nd leg of their North American tour before they announce a date or dates in D.C....either Sting or Stewart will be coming back from Europe in a body bag!! Closest show for me is over a month away, sure hope they make it at least until then!! Thanks for the response.
I'm a 39 year old who spent all the money I had to see them between the ages of 10 and 15 :) They are all pure musicians and so, the fumbling here and there can be attributed to them not playing these songs for over 20 years and having three leaders - can you say who is on first? the errors were minor at best - Sting was born with attitude so its expected -they all have the chops to back up any egos that is for sure
I saw The Police live again this time in Key Arena in Seattle with much better seats section BB row 5 seats 29-30 right in front of Sting, This show was much better than the opening night in GM Place in Vancouver, this time they were more in tune with each other, and the sound was much better. Same exact order on the songs as Maxider posted below. If people thought that because they are older and were apart for so long that they wouldn't be as good THEY ARE SO WRONG, LONG LIVE THE POLICE
saw them last night in Seattle - aside from Sting fucking up Roxanne (not that I care) it was great to see them after so many years - Party like its 1983!
Sting got a little too "Sting" you know, self absorbed; got off track/tempo and the boys just waited for him to come around 30 seconds of train cars slamming into one another, no biggie....perhaps Police Lover001 can elaborate (assuming he/she saw them the first night)......ADORE The Police, thoroughly enjoyed myself!
30 SECONDS??!! Damnit Sting!! On top of the world in 1983...best band at the time...untouchable. Now, all you have to do - after 20 years of only thinking about it - is play your little bass and sing your little songs. Like Nike says...JUST DO IT!! Great songs of course...enough to make The Police my favorite band - no question there. I'm just waiting for the tempers to hit the fan again and Sting to "walk off" the tour or some crazy crap like that.
Message.. SynchronicityII - Don't Stand So.. Voices Inside..When The World.. Spirits In The Material.. Driven To Tears - Walking On The Moon Truth Hits Everybody - Every Little Thing... Wrapped Around.. The Bed's Too Big.. Murder By Numbers De Do Do Do.. Invisible Sun Walking In Your Footsteps Can't Stand Losing You Roxanne - King Of Pain - So Lonely Every Breath You Take - Next To You
I saw The Police live on Monday May 28th 2007 in Vancouver B.C. THEY are still the best band in the world, when they hit the stage with Message in a Bottle I was moved to tears, They still have it, IF YOU WANT TO GO, DO IT IF YOU DON'T YOU WILL REGRET IT.
This is smokin' hot! One of my favorites. Will surely be on the setlist, could care less if they tune down. Can't f'n wait, the ONE band I thought I would never get to see. See you at Fenway!
Very different from the original, but just as good. This is my favorite song of all time I'd have to say, the album version just struts along at this pace that you can't help dancing and feeling good to. God I wish the tickets for them in Boston weren't all sold out, i'd so fuckin be there. God I hope they do more shows after this.
I hope Sting does his best on this Tour. People have idealized a lot these song and they won´t DEFINITIVELY sound the same! Don´t you ever expect or dream to hear this speed and voice power and raw hunger on the Tour... Otherwise you´ll get dissapointed.
I agree, probably they will even tune down a few songs. But it doesn´t mean it would not be as great as before or even better because they have also evolved professionally. It is all in us to enjoy this great band and musicians together again. Totally agree.
All new bands are best on the first and 2nd album, sync tour has nothing on the 78/79 years unless you like to stadium rock. 07 tour is looking good so far!!!!
you may be right.. but for sheer impact (this was their 1st major outing) - Hatfield goes down as one of the greatest live perperformances ever. Thanks to whoever posted the rest of the show on you tube..
Sounding kinda like Andy = easy. Playing it just like Andy does = hard as shit.

Con quelli che come te hanno sempre quella "cosa" in bocca.

Magari giudicando chi ha avuto il successo di Andy. Penoso.
Forse la Fender ha anche una signature guitar intitolata a qualche coglione come te?

30 SECONDS??!! Damnit Sting!! On top of the world in 1983...best band at the time...untouchable. Now, all you have to do - after 20 years of only thinking about it - is play your little bass and sing your little songs. Like Nike says...JUST DO IT!! Great songs of course...enough to make The Police my favorite band - no question there. I'm just waiting for the tempers to hit the fan again and Sting to "walk off" the tour or some crazy crap like that.

Message in the bottle was their first song they played?

Fredchiodi 4 years ago
I agree, probably they will even tune down a few songs. But it doesn´t mean it would not be as great as before or even better because they have also evolved professionally. It is all in us to enjoy this great band and musicians together again. Totally agree.

this is the original & best...they'll never recapture the rawness & originality of Hatfield
