@gettinpaperrrr Distance is a bigger factor in MMA, fighters naturally have more to worry about so they can't let their hands fly as freely without repercussions. For that reason the striking is different! Boxing is easier to understand, that's just how it is but it doesn't make either sport better or the best. However sports are a preference & a real fight fan should appreciate both. BTW pulling off a submission on someone that's trained in avoiding them is incredibly skillful.
@Immortalsyn83 Distance is just as important in boxing as well as arm length(reach) and the repercussion on letting your hands fly freely in boxing is getting knocked out cause your exposed, on the flip side i agree with you its all preference. I enjoy some MMA but Boxing is my preference. And I've rolled for a year in Iraq with a pro MMA fighter and your not lying about the submission stuff but its equally as hard to hit a great counter puncher w/o gettin tagged yourself. Preference is right!
@gettinpaperrrr I am not saying distance isn't a factor in boxing, just saying it's different. A kick has longer range than a punch & if you fight a wrestler you have to stay reserved (pick your shots) so he doesn't shoot under your punch or clinch. There is more situational knowledge you need to fight in MMA. You might have him in check with your hands but he could have you in check mate with a kick or elbow. Bottom line both sports should be respected but my preference is MMA.

@gettinpaperrrr I don't think you can generalize the entire sport of MMA, there are several guys that could compete in boxing. There are boxers that could compete in MMA too, anything can be learned or taught. JDS could probably do pretty well in boxing as could Nick Diaz given enough training. A guy such as David Haye might do pretty well at MMA because he has a good amount of muscle mass given proper training. Bob Arum don't know shit about MMA, he's a boxing promoter.

The only numbers reported on wiki is the bonuses & show purse. Fighters also make sponsorship money, are on salaries, receive contract signing money ect. Watch that interview with Lorenzo Fertitta in my favorites if you don't believe me. He pays the fighters bills & would know better than anyone what fighters today make.

Oscar and mayweather fight holds the highest ppv buy so far and now analysis are saying mayweather and Manny is the fight the century is asking for that it would break the highest ppv numbers period. UFC is good money but is chips compare to boxing.

As the sport continues to grow as will the salaries, MMA salaries have come a long way over the last 10 years. Now they have the next 7 years on Fox/FX network to push the sport mainstream & become fully legalized in america. UFC added 2 new weight divisions this year (135/145.) Next year they are also bringing in a 125 & 225 division.

FYI UFC 100 generated over 80 million. 1.6m buys x $50 (not counting $10 for HD). Nobody in MMA individually has pulled in nearly as much as Floyd but according to Lorenzo there are guys making 10 million plus every year not including sponsors. At least some of the things Bob said are true: Most MMA-fighters don't know how to throw a punch properly. And a lot of these guys have a terrible chin. However, MMA-fighters DO have skills and I know for sure that Bob is afraid of the competition for boxing that the UFC brings to the table.

@gameth Absolutely. That's because having a good "chin" depends on different aspects, some of which you can work on to a certain extent (e.g. neck strength, reflexes, coordination).
Punching: Obviously MMA is much more complex than boxing, but a lot of "top MMA" fighters don't have a good punching technique. Look at Fedor, Brock Lesnar, Tim Sylvia and so on. These guys leave semselves exposed when punching and can't even generate that much power.

I agree they don't use proper boxing form but they all defiantly have the power to knock an opponent unconscious. For that reason the striking is different! Boxing is easier to understand, that's just how it is but it doesn't make either sport better or the best. However sports are a preference & a real fight fan should appreciate both. BTW pulling off a submission on someone that's trained in avoiding them is incredibly skillful.

A kick has longer range than a punch & if you fight a wrestler you have to stay reserved (pick your shots) so he doesn't shoot under your punch or clinch. There is more situational knowledge you need to fight in MMA. You might have him in check with your hands but he could have you in check mate with a kick or elbow. Bottom line both sports should be respected but my preference is MMA.

There are boxers that could compete in MMA too, anything can be learned or taught. JDS could probably do pretty well in boxing as could Nick Diaz given enough training. A guy such as David Haye might do pretty well at MMA because he has a good amount of muscle mass given proper training. Bob Arum don't know shit about MMA, he's a boxing promoter.

Toney for all his boxing might couldn't land a single punch on a guy 5 years older. Squirted a few tears too as the "lights went out." Briggs KO'ed a wrestler who has never won a single kickboxing match. Butterbean lost to a lightweight in his MMA debut & has never beat anyone decent. LOL @ U

His offense is #1 but u throw him in there with a counter punching boxing technician and he will get frusterated and make mistakes. UFC relies on defense wen both fighters are grappling and not toe to toe like how silva is.

@osjehdhfjfnf In 2010 GSP made 1 million in incentive bonus's alone. Top UFC stars get a cut of the PPV they headline as well as gifts which are not reported. The only numbers reported on wiki is the bonuses & show purse. Fighters also make sponsorship money, are on salaries, receive contract signing money ect. Watch that interview with Lorenzo Fertitta in my favorites if you don't believe me. He pays the fighters bills & would know better than anyone what fighters today make.

immortalsyn83 1.6 million next to 1.25 million is a big differents. my point is UFC does all kinds of advertisement and promotions for their fights, yet no matter what, nothing comes close to any of mayweathers ppv records and the money he generates. Oscar and mayweather fight holds the highest ppv buy so far and now analysis are saying mayweather and Manny is the fight the century is asking for that it would break the highest ppv numbers period. UFC is good money but is chips compare to boxing.

As the sport continues to grow as will the salaries, MMA salaries have come a long way over the last 10 years. Now they have the next 7 years on Fox/FX network to push the sport mainstream & become fully legalized in america. UFC added 2 new weight divisions this year (135/145.) Next year they are also bringing in a 125 & 225 division.

Floyd mayweather makes more money and generates the most ppv buys that not even UFC haves no where near the numbers mayweather has earned. mayweather makes 60 to 70 millions cuz of his record and he's his own promoter and fighters in UFC only make hundreds of thousands since those guys have too many loses and their fights are sluggish.

FYI UFC 100 generated over 80 million. 1.6m buys x $50 (not counting $10 for HD). Nobody in MMA individually has pulled in nearly as much as Floyd but according to Lorenzo there are guys making 10 million plus every year not including sponsors. Can look for the interview on my favorites, he pays the company bills.

At least some of the things Bob said are true: Most MMA-fighters don't know how to throw a punch properly. And a lot of these guys have a terrible chin. However, MMA-fighters DO have skills and I know for sure that Bob is afraid of the competition for boxing that the UFC brings to the table.

@gameth Absolutely. That's because having a good "chin" depends on different aspects, some of which you can work on to a certain extent (e.g. neck strength, reflexes, coordination).
Punching: Obviously MMA is much more complex than boxing, but a lot of "top MMA" fighters don't have a good punching technique. Look at Fedor, Brock Lesnar, Tim Sylvia and so on. These guys leave semselves exposed when punching and can't even generate that much power.

I agree they don't use proper boxing form but they all defiantly have the power to knock an opponent unconscious.
