Wow, Definitely not gonna replace Hop Stoopid Ryan, a lot of people out their like Hop Stoopid better than Pliney the Elder...It IS a Balanced DIPA though with a bigger Malt Character to it than most w/some pine and a lot of Citrus. I get an average bottle now and again too, where it's a mehe. But then, I get a GREAT bottle of it and it blows me away on the nose/taste!
Sucks was about a B for me as well, I prefer their other two DIPA's. For the PRICE Lagunitas is hard to beat, every style!
@cschlish I guess I'll have to try Hop Stoopid on draft and hope it's a fresh keg. I think that will be the way to go to see how much I like it. They definitely price their beers right.
Great review. Lagunitas brews do have great aroma. Something I notice about their beers and it could be a freshness issue, but they often taste very "oily" to me. Not sure what that is. Hop Stoopid has had this characteristic several times. I also notice a vinegar taste sometimes especially after letting them sit. Perhaps that relates to the sweet orange notes you mention. Again this could be freshness but if you cant get one of these fresh in SD then that's strange. Like the hariy eyeball!
Wow I am really surprised you did not give this an A- or better. I think its worthy of all the praise its been getting. Having said that, I dunno about the new batch.
Yeah, pretty sure they are the same as well. It even states it on the bottom of the six pack. I've seen a lot of it at bevmos around san Diego. Seems like bevmo always has a lot of lagunitas beers.
Personally, this is a definitely an "A" beer to me, but I tend to like Lagunitas beers in general. I've had a lot of the big WC IPAs now (still a LOT I need to try, though) and this is actually one of my favorites. Doesn't hurt that a local place had it (the first batch) on tap for $2 a pint (during happy hour) a while back. I also enjoy the sense of humor and labeling of it all.
@paternzen Yeah, I can see why people are loving this beer and would give it an 'A'. They make some great beers and I certainly like their sense of humor with this one.
Definitely one of their better beer. I agree with you that it's a solid WC IPA, but I think it's because their beers aren't THAT great. It was like a crisper version of Hop Stoopid.
Also, I don't think it's a matter of you not having fresh bottles. I can see how Hop Stoopid doesn't wow you. There is this maltiness even in a fresh bottle that's kind of weird.

@MSJsoul Yeah, I'm not sure what that would be. I usually buy their seasonals so I know they are fresh. I've been burned on Hop Stoopid too often.

I had this on tap at Mahar's and it was awesome. If you can send me a bottle of this in the trade that'd be awesome!

I actually enjoyed this beer a lot more than you did. You should try and look for Kern River's Winter Ale, its like "Sucks" on steroids!!

@bigpapykane Seems like most people have. I missed at a chance to try Winter Ale at a tasting but I'll keep an eye out for it.

@Tantrum777 Well, I was struggling between B+/A- and decided it didn't "wow" me enough to be an A-. Still a great beer though.

Little Sumpin' is one of my favorite IPAs. I've never had Sucks. How do you think they compare?
Donut8Danggs 4 weeks ago
@Donut8Danggs Sucks is more typical west coast style but it's been awhile since I've had the regular Little Sumpin'.
