I am torn between both of your and variablast's arguments.
Changing attitudes towards people does seem like a good idea perhaps better than changing the usage of words. In some ways I feel that variablast's cause may be a hopeless one.
However, this is also a censorship issue. The book "Huckleberry Finn" has been censored for using "Nigger" even though that book is one of the least racist books in American history. People should take the word less seriously when it comes to censorship.

Changing the word in a particular context will not preclude its use in other contexts. You have to change peoples attitudes so they will no longer use it in a racial context.

I'm glad you guys are able to say such a word without fear, in the context of academic discussion. People are so afraid to talk about disgusting words that they don't even bother, and that doesn't solve the problem.

When my husband worked at a certain staffed residence for special needs people they had used the term "retarded" or just "MR" to describe their clients. When they insisted everyone switch to using the term "individuals" because the term "retarded" was an insult, guess how long it was before I was at the mall and heard someone familiar with that change call someone else an "in-duh-vidual"? Not long. They clearly meant the same thing. What good did the change do?
A great example is all the words the GLBT community 'took back'. We've gotten pretty good at it. The words homosexual, queer and lesbian used to all be homophobic/homobigoted slurs and are now are 'owned' by the LGBT community and used as descriptive words.

Therefore, I would propose that your new moral objective be to seek out and verify the existence of Babelfish, possibly setting up tanks to breed them for worldwide distribution. This would achieve two goals:
1) It would completely validate atheism, *refuting the existence of god (*See the Hitchhikers Guide section on "Well, That About Wraps It Up For God")
2) Will render word definitions meaningless, always conveying what the speaker intends.

I am torn between both of your and variablast's arguments.
Changing attitudes towards people does seem like a good idea perhaps better than changing the usage of words. In some ways I feel that variablast's cause may be a hopeless one.
However, this is also a censorship issue. The book "Huckleberry Finn" has been censored for using "Nigger" even though that book is one of the least racist books in American history. People should take the word less seriously when it comes to censorship.

it's like the word jew. It can mean someone who is of the jewish faith or it can be the word for the greedy jew stereotype. Words are context sensitive. Changing the word in a particular context will not preclude its use in other contexts. You have to change peoples attitudes so they will no longer use it in a racial context.

The Word "Nigger" for example is a little taboo sure, but that's because people gave it a terrible meaning and continue to do it. I agree with Bionic on this, new words and phrases will be created to insult people and races. So changing a single word is irrelevant.

@commanderkruge As the old saying goes "it is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness". I said what I had to say, he responded to it. We've both stated our stance and I don't think there's any animosity there between us.
Considering I have been dealing with the "you're either absolutely with me or absolutely against me" stuff with Thunderf00t for the last few hours I think Variablast's amicable response (to me at least) is quite refreshing.
But yes, I am done with the topic.

When my husband worked at a certain staffed residence for special needs people they had used the term "retarded" or just "MR" to describe their clients. When they insisted everyone switch to using the term "individuals" because the term "retarded" was an insult, guess how long it was before I was at the mall and heard someone familiar with that change call someone else an "in-duh-vidual"? Not long. They clearly meant the same thing. What good did the change do?

A great example is all the words the GLBT community 'took back'. We've gotten pretty good at it. The words homosexual, queer and lesbian used to all be homophobic/homobigoted slurs and are now are 'owned' by the LGBT community and used as descriptive words.
Oh, but wait, now we're "fags" and "faggots". Taking back the words did nothing to change the attitudes, prejudice and bigotry of those who hate GLBT people.
(Sorry if I am missing any new letters on LGBT of if anyone minds the order)

@ristinraccoon Exactly the point I was trying to make in my comments a few days ago, but then that moron 'veriaturd' came allong and suggested that lesbians would be better off if the word dyke had no negative meaning in society! As if other words didn't exist, or new words couldn't be made up, by bigots who wish to insult others. Its not the words that need to be altered, it's the attitudes of people who use these words to insult and degrade others that need altering.

Also, just because he wants to change the word, doesn't mean anyone else does.
He also doesn't have a clue about the history of the word. He's ignorant.
One last thing, I know black people who would kick his ass for saying that word, no matter what he says he means by it. He's a nut job. There is no need to change the word either. It is what it is. In time the word will lose all meaning, but that's a long time from now. I think this guy is just looking for meaning in his life.

LOL, I think I may have hit a nerve. I've given up on trying to talk sense into this guy. He's just way to narcissistic to admit he's wrong and he's always been wrong. The reason why his arguments fail is b/c it not about race or racism, it's about name freedom to him. Everything else is a non issue and is not to be considered.

@variablast I'm not trying to come across as knowing you, and just so you know I harbor no ill will or anger in these comments. From my perspective this is just a civil discussion. I suppose if your quest makes you feel like you have a purpose in life, more power to you. My point is simply that the battle you have picked is likely a losing one for you, and the odds are so impossibly against you that it seems foolish to try. We didn't have to redefine the word "Hottentot." Nobody went on a personal crusade to change the meaning to include "all humans", or to desensitize the word's offensive meaning. It is no longer used in everyday language. Maybe one day the "n" word will be just as outdated and unused.

Trying to change the meaning of a word whose definitions carry negative baggage with it is not simple.
Why would you want to continue to be able to say "nigger" anyway?
Say it in a place that hasn't gotten your message, and well....the consequences can be fatal.
Your best and safest bet is to just not say it and leave it at that, because you're not going to change EVERYONE'S mind on this word.

The word nigger refers to black people in an extremely derogatory way and you use the word for all people based on the fact that all humans were dreived from dark skinned people... it is still negative. You can not change that.
BTW, it makes no sense to replace the word human with a word that is so negatively charged.

Therefore, I would propose that your new moral objective be to seek out and verify the existence of Babelfish, possibly setting up tanks to breed them for worldwide distribution. This would achieve two goals:

OK, I admit it. I knew about #3 but left it out on purpose. I figured if Variablast switched to looking for non-existent Babelfish it would keep him busy for a while, and he would drop this whole other thing. That, and of course Bablefish breeding was not covered in the guide. It would have been inciteful to see what Variablast came up with along those lines of pursuit.
My intentions were pure (and of course, I know where my towel is).

If I cross reference about 10 of your comment responses, I can eventually decode what in the world you are trying to say.
I do want to point out a few things:
1) I admit the words I used are fictional, but did give the fictional titles that defined them.
2) "grok" is Martian.
3) "frood" is space slang, apparently not English, but this is not clear because the characters were under the influence of "babelfish".
That being said, I have had a revelation. You need a Babelfish.
