well, who cares if they are the best or not. They play awesome here - absolutely amazing and inspiring. Great, really. But f..k - there are lots of good players in the world. I used to listen to Gary Moore. R.I.P.
I've been a fan of LC for over 30 years and he is considered (along with Pat Metheny) to be one of the best Jazz Guitarist of all time. Just read Guitar Player magazine. He also was voted NARAS’s "Most Valuable Player" for three consecutive years. NARAS then named him "Player Emeritus" and retired him from eligibility. 4 grammy's and 19 nominations, worked on over 100 gold albums...the list goes on and on.
True great players. Love Larry Carlton. He defined tone for so long. Not best ever. No such thing. There are far to many diverse talents. You confuse sports with art.
These guys are very good, no question. But have you ever heard of Roy Buchanan? You may want to have a listen to him before you make a bold statement like that.
Excellent music! Thank you for sharing. I've never heard of either of them, which surprises me. I think that one of them (Larry maybe?) has a style similar to Albert King. And the other one reminds me of BB King.I don't play guitar, but I sure do LOVE listening to it. In my opinion, their is no such thing as best. It's all a matter of opinion. If you have not already, you should check out, John Butler Trio-Ocean-Live from Red rock. Also, an excellent guitarist. Good guitar cleanses your soul.
Chet Atkins, Merle Travis and Les Paul thought that Django Reinhardt was the best . But who were they compared to you (given your infinite knowledge and taste . ).
Brad Paisley,Steve Wariner,Pat Flynn,Steve Kaufman,Doc Watson, Tony Rice, Steve Ray Vaughn, Billy Gibbons, Alex Lifeson,Robin Trower, Peter Frampton, Glen Cambell, Roy Clark,Bret Mason, Duane Allman, Chuck Berry, Tony Iommi, Tommy Shaw, Ted Nugent, Rik Emmett,Walter Becker,Damon Johnson, Ryan Roxie, Mark Knopfler to name a few

each guitarist has their own individual style,.. people are diverse,.. so, the idea of the greatest dosen't come into it,.. it's whether you appreciate what they're coming up with, whether you dig it or not whether it moves you or not,.. if it does something for you ,..great,.. if not,.. move on. the person who posted this video simply put that title to atrract attention to two guitarists he enjoys,..who are perhaps a little bit unappreciated perhaps.
I like tit. The two guitars are 'at each other' but blend. Very nice tone. Edgey, daring, loose but tight. Nice stuff, it drew me in. I would love to have been there, right up front, soaken up the vibe and kissin' the sound with my ears.
I am a guitar player, these guys are fucking great..no doubt about it..they get some sweet moves..but as far as being the best goes...i dont know if it even matters to...i mean to me it doesnt. BUT..i could see it because as i watched this i found myself genuinely strck as how good these two are..i am glad i watched this...it inspired me.
there is no best ever. to many styles and types of music. if you got soul and feel what you play and people like it you are good. that being said i like this. but on the 90% thing well eric clapton ( GOD ) likes jeff beck, and says sonny landreth is the best of all time.and think clapton is at the top of the 90% so its still all a opinion
I love Larry and Robben's playing. Phenoms. But if you say the greatest guitarist who ever lived just plays electric, then you are leaving out a whole world of "the world's best guitarists."
If you include purist technique, most emotionally evoking, best pure tone, then look no further than Julian Bream. Every guitarist owes it to themself to see the dvd "My Life in Music." Now that is a musical guitar playing genius! Juliam Bream is the greatest of the all imho.
Everyone has an opinion on who is the best guitarist...it's a matter of "personal" preference folks. Great video and enjoyed their playing...thanks for sharing

@unkleskratch I agree. Is this genre of music they are some of the best. As a Steely Dan fan, I'm familiar with Carlton, and one could make a case for him being one of the best guitarists I suppose. As for Ford, I've only been aware of him through Joni Mitchell or Tom Scott. However IMO, I have my doubts if those other than diehard Ford fans would consider him among the "greats". I personally think Carl Radle was one of the best bass players evre, but unless you are a big Clapton fan you probably don't know who he was. I agree with "artsymonster".
The two best, ever. Never mind Tommy Emmanuel. Or Birelli Lagrene. Or Danny Gatton...or Joe Pass...or Django Reinhardt..or Wes Montgomery... Nah, it's these two guys.
I too object to "the best". How many "the bests" of one thing are there on youtube anyway? How do you judge what "the best" is? Numbers of blues licks? Note production speed? How far one can bend a note? How fast? How about originality? FIrst to do such and such? Hoo boy! All respect to the two shown in this video. Nice sounds.
Brilliant clip. Alas a very subjective question as to who is the best guitarist. B.B. King, Mark Knopfler, Rory Galagher all have very diferent styles and techniques. Surely the best has to be down to individual prefereces be it artist or a particular track.
Great playing, however I am so tired of comparisons. There is no best or worst, it's just art, self expression. Let it go, just enjoy a musical moment for what it is and stop trying to compare everyone. As you get older you realize how silly it all is anyway. IMHO...
Enjoyable performance. Memorable? Hmmm... Ask me in 100 days.. then in 10 years. Then I'll ask you about Segovia... Chet Atkins... The Lima Brothers (Los Indios Tabajaras) ... Santana. True greatness can really only be tested by time.
And I'm sure these guys, while having a good and healthy self-image, would NOT make those exaggerated claims of their own greatness - but rather would always point to their teachers, and those whom they learned and are still learning, from.
Well, still you have to go to Garry Moore playing " The Stumble" or John McGlaughlan ( hope that`s right) on Crossroads 2004 to compare for style and mastery of the instrument I think. Just my opinion people. Been playing since 1968 and still strugglin. Cheers,
DEFINITELY LEGENDS IN YOUR OWN MIND ! LOOK THEM UP BECAUSE NOBODY'S EVER HEARD OF THEM RIGHT ? THAT'S WHY THEY'RE FAMOUS I QUESS ! REALLY NOW THAT'S YOUR DAD & YOUR BROTHER ISN'T IT ?
@Lastaccountgothacked Haha, same here mate. And where's Tommy Emmanuel on the list? I can't be bothered looking on here to see if it's been posted.Anyway's, back to Dave Gilmour!
erm... music ain't exactly the olympics, but I somewhat resent the "best ever" statement in any area, you always end up leaving behind the best names.
Some I didnt see mentioned : Joe Pass, Jim Hall, George Benson, John Abercrombie, Andres Segovia, Tuck Andress, Mick Goodrick, Stanley Jordan and so many more before these 2 imo even only among the blues players (how can you possibly think Larry Carlton plays better blues than SRV or Jimi ? >.> he'd disagree himself).
There must be well over a million "best guitar players EVER". I know of a few that you may never heard of. I'd put the late Sly D. Cobb, a local guitarist in the Washington, DC area in the 60's, against the best that you can bring.
Easy man. They're 2 of the greatest. As a matter of fact I love those 2. But there are a few more. It's allways hard to elect any 2 best guitar players. What canyou say about, Wes Montgomery, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Hall, Pat Metheny, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and who ever you might think about. I agree that in a sofisticated bluesy style theese 2 maybe are the greatest. And I follow their path, believe me.
Has anyone heard the solo to the Steely Dan tune "Kid Charlemagne"? Carlton played that and it is often regarded as one of the most tasty solos ever. He recorded with them a few times but that solo is a standout.
NEVER judge a fellow guitarist by his blues.. there's no best blues axman. thers only IS the blues. And every one got one. Learn to speak of yours. ANd when you share a solo with a guitar amigo who offers you his blues, you answer back with yours in empathy, all together always listening to the band.. and you do all this LIKE IT IS SPARTA!!
dude check out Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler....Jimi Hendrix xDD, B.B King, Duane Allman, Django Reinherdt, Keith Richards, Jimi Page, Slash and im not sure who is an ignorant here please....all people who knows real music know that Eric Clapton or B.B King could destroy these two guys with only one hand
Mark Knopfler. Stevie Ray. Chet Atkins. There are so many great guitarists in the world. We can name our favorites, but who among any of us is able to state that one is better than another? It's in the individual ear, soul, and circumstances of life. All of them are great.
@idancedwithbilliejoe John Mayer what a joke did u see him play with BB King. King was gettin pissed says hey to mr. mayer you can't be me .......Jjm K
I think María del Rosario Pilar Martínez Molina Gutiérrez de los Perales Santa Ana Romanguera y de la Hinojosa Rasten is a great Female guitarist.....
It's like ice cream flavors with personal perferences. These two are in the top 100 living guitarists, and are certainly recognizable within a handful of notes, as are almost all of the most famous guitarists. Musicians' respect for another musician is sometimes about note and chord choices, where the way they say it, where the decision to substitute or to phrase is unique and novel, and that is an item among musicians more telling than a list of the most popular guitarists will ever reveal.
@zimmer266 I agree....personal prefrences. I would like to add Roy Buchanon to this conversation. He's the best I have seen or heard in my life. By the way, I'm 54 so I've seen quite a few.
It is really wonderful that people still want to make and listen to this music.

There are way too many great guitarists to say that these two are the best ever. There is only one best ever, Clapton.

Are Larry Carlton and Robben Ford flirting here? I don't really care, superb interaction between two fine players!

I'm a guitarist and lover of great players. Anyone who denies these two are exceptional artists gives up all pretense to credibility. The end.

@DrMorpheus and anyone who claims that they are the two best ever does the same.

@Caribman9999 P.S. I forgot to mention Tommy Emmanuel ... oh : and John Williams ... and the Romeros... and... B.B. King and....
Caribman9999 1 week ago
Well, still you have to go to Garry Moore playing " The Stumble" or John McGlaughlan ( hope that`s right) on Crossroads 2004 to compare for style and mastery of the instrument I think. Just my opinion people. Been playing since 1968 and still strugglin. Cheers,

erm... music ain't exactly the olympics, but I somewhat resent the "best ever" statement in any area, you always end up leaving behind the best names.
Both have good touch tho.

Hendrix, Page, Ray Vaughan, Clapton, Cantrell, just a few off top of my head.
These guys sound unbelievable!
It's hard to call any guitarist the best ever, different styles, sounds and tones etc.

Has anyone heard the solo to the Steely Dan tune "Kid Charlemagne"? Carlton played that and it is often regarded as one of the most tasty solos ever. He recorded with them a few times but that solo is a standout.
alwaysopen 1 week ago
NEVER judge a fellow guitarist by his blues.. there's no best blues axman. thers only IS the blues. And every one got one. Learn to speak of yours. ANd when you share a solo with a guitar amigo who offers you his blues, you answer back with yours in empathy, all together always listening to the band.. and you do all this LIKE IT IS SPARTA!!

Mark Knopfler. Stevie Ray. Chet Atkins. There are so many great guitarists in the world. We can name our favorites, but who among any of us is able to state that one is better than another? It's in the individual ear, soul, and circumstances of life. All of them are great.

Oh come on...anyone know Ry Cooder? Steve Vai? or how about George Harrison? Bonnie Raitt?
Please don't bother with late comers (like John Mayer) who haven't paid their dues and just don't have the chops...maybe in 30 years or so

It's like ice cream flavors with personal perferences. These two are in the top 100 living guitarists, and are certainly recognizable within a handful of notes, as are almost all of the most famous guitarists. Musicians' respect for another musician is sometimes about note and chord choices, where the way they say it, where the decision to substitute or to phrase is unique and novel, and that is an item among musicians more telling than a list of the most popular guitarists will ever reveal.
zimmer266 1 week ago 6
@zimmer266 I agree....personal prefrences. I would like to add Roy Buchanon to this conversation. He's the best I have seen or heard in my life. By the way, I'm 54 so I've seen quite a few.
