  • Yeah code named scorpion because the turbo sits on the top

  • What do you think of the new engine that Ford is comming out with. I think its a 7 litre powerstroke engine.

  • @mojame100

It looks like a pretty well made unit. I sure hope it works out for them!. It's actually a 6.7, they call it the Scorpion.

  • is that a old allison 8speed automatic in that truck?

  • It's an MT653, a 5 speed. It's got a granny low 1st, so it drives in 2-5 normally. What you hear is the torque converter locking up after 3rd, 4th, and 5th

  • Is this a 477 Super Duty big block?

  • Oh, no. It's a 478 cu. inch, inline 6 turbo diesel.

  • can u take a video of the engine?

Ford sure make a wide range of diesels.

  • so its pretty much gotta cummins in it

  • It's like a Cummins, but it's not a Cummins. The injection system is nealy identical, except the pump is on the right side, and these didnt have rotary pumps. The engine itself isn't quite as beefy internally. I wouldnt try making 1000hp with a 6.6 or 7.8 Ford.

  • aite thanks

  • thats what i thought it was until i heard it.

  • Would one of these fit in a 76 ford F250?

  • Not unless it has a major body lift. A better swapper would be a 6.6 liter. Same basic design, still has the "Ford" script on the valve cover, it's just a little smaller. The 7.8 is even taller than a DT466 IH engine.

  • are those 7.8s good? what are their weaknesses?

  • They aren't bad at all. With regular maintenance, they will last a really long time. With the factory pump adjustment, they seem kinda doggy, but adjusting the fuel screw or plate is a free 30hp. Keep up on the fuel filter changes, especially the one close to the tank. Lastly, carry an extra set of belts.

  • I thought straight pipes made the trucks quieter. Oh, and what's its top speed?

  • straight pipe just eliminates the muffler, it's pretty loud, but not overly obnoxious. It tops out at 69mph.

  • In this video, was that wide open throttle? Also, is that a turbocharged engine. I saw the other vids of this truck, and I think I can hear a turbo, but I'm not sure.

  • did I count 5 speeds? What transmission does it have? Or is it a 4spd with locking converter?

haven't heard of a ford 7.8 either, did ford make this engine or somebody else?

  • I guess it's an allison since the shift pattern is RND321 that's the same as my 545. But this one seems to lock the torque converter in second gear. Do you know which model this is? It sounds nice and smooth.

  • It's an Allison MT653. It's a 5 speed, but 1st is a granny low & not used unless selected in "1". Normal driving it uses 2-5, and converter lockup is in 3-5.

  • It's nice and smooth. I've driven a few Allison's and they tend to be kind of harsh and only work well under a heavy load. Did you make any adjustments to yours?

  • Look at the movie "DT466 IH" , you see how it hits the rev limiter and then waits another 5 seconds before it shifts? That's what most Allisons do, even the electronicalized ones. Did you do anything to change the shift pattern on yours? Is yours hydraulic or electronic?

  • That other movie is the main truck I used to drive. Ironically, it's the same MT653 in the IH. I sent it back to the tranny shop a couple times to get it better, & it still shifts horrible. These MT653's are all old school mechanical.

  • The only adjustments I did were to the fuel system, the trans is a fresh rebuild, with less than 5k miles on it. This one does shift nice.

  • It's made by New Holland for ford tractors, then made it to trucks. They made a 6.6 & a 7.8 for the trucks from mid 80's to 93.

  • i had a 6.6 liter in a 1991 school bus. It was tough trying to find parts as no one at auto parts stores had ever heard of a 6.6 liter ford motor. Trying to explain it was actually a Brazilian/New Holland tractor engine didn't really help.

  • Belts & filters, may be the only thing an auto parts store can get you. Try a New Holland tractor shop.

  • @jacuzzibusguy lol yea ford makes ALOT of shit its pretty crazy and most of the avergae joes with and autozone shirt on aint gonna have a clue of what ur talkin about

  • This is the New Holland 7.8 Ford engine. It has a Bosch A-pump that has had the fuel screw adjusted a little bit, and the governor springs tightened up. It will rev to 2900 under load.
