I'm a bleeding heart liberal but I love Simpson. He's like the old grandpa that the grandchildren watch what they say and how they dress around because he'll curse you haha.
That being said destroying Social Security is a huge mistake
Alan Simpson is an old piece of shit, he's no conservative. He can go burn in hell for all I care about his views. He's no better than a cocksucking liberal.
People receive much more from Social Security than they pay in. This pundit is pretty logical save for his belief that Social Security is solvent and that we are just getting back the money we pay in. That's a crock, of course. The whole system is insolvent; the government borrows from the fund constantly, and I will NEVER see a dime of the money they are already squeezing out of me. We should end it now before it is ended when the checks they send out won't buy a loaf of bread. Come on people.
Hearing one of the last of the old-school Republicans like Simpson is one of the best ways illustrating how far politics in general and the GOP in particular have shifted. Remember that this party overwhelmingly voted for the Civil Right Act in 1964. When the Roe v. Wade ruling was handed down, Nixon, who was in office at the time, kept his opinions to himself. Since Reagan, however, social conservatism has been paramount in the GOP, however and few Dems have the courage to stand up to it.
I'd listen to people like Simpson and Ron Paul, they know what they are talking about. That doesn't mean that I agree with them, but at least they seem to be connected to the American people.
'm so sick of progressives/liberals/dems promoting higher taxes for **anyone**.
Don't you putzes realize that they will use it for more warmongering, corporatism and other bullshit? No? You really believe that this gov't will wash it through their bureaucracy and hand it back to the people that need it....god damn, that is so incredibly naive.
@Amy31415 Don't you realize that they'll make you pay it eventually? What are you betting you're going to die before the money has to be paid back(with interest)? I'll tell you what I told every pro-war middle aged person who supported Bush, fuck you pay for your own damned wars.
How does your statement stand, when it's basis was inherently false? You support Obama's wars? You suit up, shoot some strangers and pay for it, I'm sure as shit not going to just because he's a Dem.
I pulled my weight--but I will NOT support Bush OR Obama's wars. In fact, I'll do whatever I can to suck the life out of the federal gov't so long as they keep this shit up.
@Amy31415 Because the bases isn't false, you want lower taxes, you don't care about the fact that you'r just pushing the debt on the next generation. They had less money during the Bush years & yet they did more warmongering & BS than anyone thought possible. When you say they'll just use the cash for utterly fucktacular bullshit, you're right, but at least if we pay for it up front we don't have to pay the damned interest.
Okay...so we give more money to a warmongering federal government, who then proceeds to spend it on more warmongering--this lowers the debt how? Bush borrowed from China (mostly) to fund the wars, sending us into debt, Obama just keeps spending--both suck ass. For the record, Obama is just as much of a warmonger as Bush ever was. "He started it" doesn't fly anymore when Obama has only ramped up our foreign hostilities.

As to top brackets of 90%, etc. - NOBODY WAS PAYING THAT.
When ppl say: 90% income tax - I say: so? Nobody pays that.
In HISTORY of USA the EFFECTIVE rate NEVER went over 20%. Do you get it?
It's a behavioral change - when you promise to tax 9/10 of income, you shift ppl's behavior, so they make sure not to show that money as income through whatever means - holding the money in companies, moving it around, whatever. It makes no sense to pay that tax and nobody did.
Saying: raise the payroll to 200K, whatever, won't help, the money is spent on general stuff anyway, it was never saved into any fund.
Also, if SS was some form of a fund: WHY would you tax any money from people who make more than enough to tend for themselves? Why would you have millionaires taxed for SS? They shouldn't be getting SS, but they shouldn't be taxed for it. They don't need it.
SS has 0 problem? Famous last words. The so called 'surplus' is all US gov't bonds.
Go ahead, sell them. I double dare you: SELL THEM. Try raising any money for them on the market. Who is buying? US Fed is buying. Some foreign CENTRAL banks are buying. That's all. All private holders are selling and/or not rolling over.

Alan Simpson is a social progressive, that means he just lost 79% of his conservative base. Alan Simpson is an economic disaster, but when it comes to social issues, his heart is in the right place, to see this guy, a demigod amongst the republicans come out, beat his own party with an ugly stick and join us on social issues is heart warming.
If you look up US Public Debt or Budget Deficit on Google and then look at the graphs from the Deficit Clock, you can watch as the deficit grows under Republican leadership, tapers under Democrat leadership and then grows again under republican leadership.
This repetitive system gets worse with every iteration and is directly attributable to the ideological shift that Cenk discusses here.
It's time to vote for people that care about you, and that may not be either of the two main US parties...
I can totally see why Cenk used to be a republican. He's definitely right wing on many issues: He supports free market and capitalism, etc. Why I like Cenk is because he's one of the few right wingers I know of that I think I could have a reasonable conversation with.
I keep wanting to say: In Europe, "Liberals" are considered right wing. To be left wing, you need to be at LEAST a social democrat. (Social democrats are for reforming society toward socialist ideals while maintaining capitalism.)
> In my personal opinion (feel free to disagree, obviously), social democracy should be called the centre of the left-right spectrum. Seriously, trying to make a compromise between the rightist system and the leftist ideology; if that isn't centrist, what is?
Also, it's not just a left-right line: there's more to the political spectrum than that. There's also individualism versus communitarism which is the reason for the conservatives' inconsistency on the "big government" argument.
@Tuuliska There are very good 'conservative' values which I agree with Cenk on, such as, competition results in product diversity and innovation. In todays world, Conservative means corporatist, so when Cenk and I say 'true conservative values' we wholeheartedly disagree with the republican party, because the republicans aren't conservative, they're corporatist. one can argue what America is, but at its current state, its communist for the top 10%, fascist for the bottom 90%. Corporatist state.
Simpson is old enough and establish enough he doesn't give a FU@K and can speak his mind. The next crop of Republicans though, ugh.. Palin and their ilk.. weak morally, mentally, spiritually in almost every single way, though that's not a rib against Republicans, more so against modern Americans..
I have seldom agreed with the beliefs of the Republican party, but in the past, they honestly believed that they had the right way to run this country for the betterment of American for Americans.
Today, they are mean spirited and selfish to the point of being criminal.
It‘s interesting how liberals scream about how corporations spend so much money to get Republicans elected. Yet in the same breath, Dems praise labor unions as real people -- completely ignoring the “corporations” that employ them and the astronomical amounts corporate UNIONS spend to elect Democrats.
damm a GOP guy who rembers it about a womens right to choice not and old white precher + hates homophobes there might be time still to save the GOP from becoming a Christian verison of the taliban
@jonmel i think its already there, at least the mainstream gop. the brainwashing has hit critical mass, you get your occasional guy like mr simpson but they arent popular. the gop found out that the best way to win support is to have ignorant fools on your side and they havent looked back since.
CENK: Gotta call bullshit on this one. When you interviewed Danforth, he asked him at least twice if he left the UN due to disagreements with the Bush administration, and both times, he said no. The interview can be found here: watch?v=Kpzli7_iOqg
He's trying to help out his fellow republicans. Alan Simpson is a real asshole. Just look at his role on the bipartisan debt commission. He wants to represent the rich like the other republicans. He just realizes that gay bashing and extremist social positions aren't the way to get the power you need to do favors for your buddies, in this case Alan Simpson, a multimillionaire ex-senator.
The actual right wing has decreased in recent times, all they have done is try and get the attention of the extreme elements in the US and pass that opinion off as mainstream.

I still have friends who scoff at me or just laugh when I claim that Obama's a conservative. It's not his policy, either--they simply hear "Democrat" and assume "liberal." Won't listen to reason.
Never heard of Allan Simpson, but sounds very reasonable, even including his comments about sucking on the tits of social security.
Cenk is wrong about Obama being to the left of Simpson. Simpson didn't necessarily support same sex marriage. From this clip, he's only criticizing the hatred from right wingers who can't stand homosexuals. That doesn't mean he supports legislated same sex marriage. Tha'ts just TYT propoganda
If you read my comments even slightly, you would notice I'm not bitching about (same sex) marriage at all, for or against. I was criticizing Cenk for assuming this politician was supporting same sex marriage when in fact he was only decrying the hatred of some members of his own party.
To your point about the country having greater issues that need addressing, even if you are right, that doesn't mean social issues shouldn't be discussed.
@hofifut SSI= Social Security Insurance. Social security is an insurance. If you wreck your car and have car insurance. Are you sucking the tit of the insurance company by having them pay for the accident? Of course not because you paid your premiums. Same with Social Security, you paid premiums all your life to an insurance to ensure a nominal wage when you could no longer work. The money is owed and to let the Government commit fraud with this insurance is wrong. The issue is theft of funds.
@Fr33d0m4a11 The insurance company would think you're sucking on their tit and if you have a large enough claim they'll have their investigator try to find any loophole they can to ratfuck you....errr in my experience at least.
@dffykvn Well thats called insurance fraud when insurance companies refuse to pay their claims. I see it the same when Republicans try to violate the claim with SSI. Its insurance fraud. They cant refuse to pay claims just because they dipped into the pool and stole the money out of the pool. Plus Im personal against the FICA cap because the middle class and poor have to pay to their last dollar. Therefore so should the wealthy.
Before you try to insult someone, at least try to understand what they are saying to begin with. I'm not saying I am for or against same sex marriage. All I said during my comments was that this Simpson guy did not explicitly say he was for legislated same sex marriage. He was simply criticizing the hatred from some people within his own party. My criticism was levelled at Cenk by twisting this, and to suggest Obama is to the right of Simpson. Why does that make me conservative?
@hofifut I made a statement of fact. And the only way you would find it insulting would be if you were a conservative.
Obama has stated publically on several occaisons he's not in favour of same sex marriage, only watered down civil unions. That puts him effectively to the right of Simpson because unlike a lot of other political issues same sex marriage has no middle ground and is essentially binary, ie to NOT be against is effectively to be FOR it, whether or not you explicitly say so.
Simpson did not say he was for same sex marriage, OK? According to your logic of this issue having no middle ground, then Obama is either with Simpson or not. To repeat, Simpson did not state his support for legislated same sex marriage. He simply criticized the vitriol from some of his Republican colleagues. So in your "binary" world, how can Obama be to the right of Simpson on this issue?
Just because you state you say the facts, doesn't mean it is so
@hofifut You seem to be making a dedicated effor to NOT understand this, so I'll explain it one more time before I give up on you: Yes, Simpson did not say he was for it but he didn't say he was against it either. Obama HAS SAID he's against it, explicitly. Those are the facts. That puts him to the right of Simpson.
You may choose to reinterpret that to fullfil this apparent psychological need of yours to lock Obama into the left in spite of his actions but that doesn't alter the reality.
not fucking hard at all, and had you originally employed your qualifier, instead of saying "puts him effectively to the right", coupled with your obama editorializing, and without your tardy condition, i wouldn't have had to properly point out some bullshit.
@KEvronista Oh please, spare me the typical right-wing bitching about a lack of specificity. It's not my fault if you have zero capacity to detect inference or remain in context and need everything spelled out in exhaustive detail like you were a fucking three-year old.
don't fault me if nothing - nothing - you said, prior to me calling you on your bullshit, gave any indication that you meant otherwise. choose your words carefully, as i do; it'll lessen the effect of you coming off as such a vituperative plonkett, albeit only minimally.
@hofifut " Tha'ts just TYT propoganda " Really, you shouldn't say " TYT propoganda " because these Liberals and Progressives swallow all of everything Cenk says hook, line and sinker.
Please!!! To all my fellow libs! Please, lets all vote for Trump. We truly need to get rid of all the political nonsense affecting our great USA. You all now know that it's true when I say this--> Obama is very much right of Donald Trump politically. Please!!! Lets get rid of all the polarizing madness affecting our great USA. TRUMP FOR PRESIDENT!!!
@jacobdane No joke... It can't be that dificult to secure some money for a hand held HD camera and simply recording the shoots (while you also stream it) and uploading the recordings and not the streaming to youtube.
Ya know, I may not always agree with your views, but I always listen, learn and enjoy your informative reports. You all do a great job, I love how you put together your dialog, and that you get me thinking about issues of the day in an informed manor.
There are two types of social security payments: there is the regular social security that pays out to people who have contributed to the system, and then there is the supplementary social security that pays out to poor and disabled people who may not have put a single cent into the system.
The real problem is the second category: *supplementary* social security, which needs to be cut because too many people are abusing it.
WHERE IS TEDDY ROOSEVELT?! WHERE IS ABRAHAM LINCOLN?!
They would both puke at the thought of being "Republican" as it's defined today.
Break the rich hold on American politics! Bring power back to the commoners, the workers! Throw the criminal-rich out on their asses! Make them know what begging for food is all about: CHARITY!!!
thanks ill look into that. I consider cenk (albeit i admit based on my limited exposure) a bit of a partisan reactionary, which is of course ironic. But Ill review more vids.
Except that Alan Simpson has always been a RINO. I never considered him a conservative. When he was in the Senate, Jesse Helms was more my style. Simpson has always been way too liberal. He is pretty close to Arlen Specter on the ideological spectrum - hardly a conservative.
@dffykvn Agreed he is cranky and elitist, but my opprobrium toward him is rooted in his liberalism. The guy is a RINO. He is Arlen Specter - who cares what he says - he has NEVER represented the core values of the GOP and does not speak to them today.
Agree with him. Im conservative, and if the GOP starts this bullshit about abortion, and social issues, we are DONE. I hate Santorium, I wish he would shut the fuck up and do us all a favor.
Yes there are honest men in each party, even though, they may be off on their numbers.
At least were finding some open minded thinkers, that may, with a little informative interjection, revise their veiw, and actually admit, it can be improved.
Would he say that comment twenty five years ago? Maybe on the first cold day in hell.
So it shows even the older generations, that faced far more of that social stigma, is capable of change.
when cenk says that gop is anti gay and abortion shouldn't be voted on by men he's a flaming dirty liberal. when alan simpson says it, oh hes just telling the truth. what is wrong with this world
@masterkayaki Are the gops policies anti gay and anti abortion? Yes and yes.
does alan simpson saying that the govt shouldn't outlaw choice or discriminate against gays mean he's saner than every other idiot in office who doesn't share that opinion? Yes.
He was right both times, your party elected a house and senate filled to the brim with bigots and anti choice douchebags.
@dffykvn what is my party again? did i mention my party? i'm pretty sure i didn't mention my party? how do you know my party when i didn't even tell you my party? are you stalking me?
The only reason Simpson is sticking up for gays is because he is one. He is a hateful, arrogant, hypocritical SOB just like the rest of them. Watch his interview with Bill Maher
@MrChameleon101 Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are H. L Hunt (you possibly know his background), a few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid
@MrChameleon101 his official quote, " Should any political party attempt to abolish Social Security and eliminate Labour laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history." This can be found in Western Civilization (textbook) by Jackson J. Spielvogel.
@MrHav1k Not very much? The only people I've met who are passionately against gay marriage, maybe the only people I've met who are against it at all, are conservatives who never supported Obama in the first place.
we could talk about cutting social security all day long but nothing will happen....those old folks have too much time in their hands to do anything but vote on election day.
@TheWrench77 Don't forget, in the 1950's we didn't have Globalization the way we do now. I can see that, 50 years ago, America was the only place to do business. Not true anymore, thus forcing Corporate tax rates down. Also, the rich can live anywhere they want, whereas 50 years ago, they wouldn't dream of leaving the US.
Remember when there used to be anti-capitalists in the Republican party? That's how far the Republican party has shifted, there used to be anti-capitalists in the Republican party.
The thing is that the racist Republican say 25% from 35% so that Obama the wimp say fucking compromise a 30%.
What Obama should say if the si race taxed to 45% , and as a Emergency for one year to taxes should be 60% on people making more than a million dollar and to 90 % on people over 2 million..
Not negotiation and any one that refuse to may send then to Federal prison for 30 or forty years accused of treason to destroy the stability of the nation.
@megaead69 A 6,000 year-old earth, Jesus riding around on dinosaurs, the tribal God of the ancient Judean desert poofing a man into existence then creating a woman out of one of his ribs, talking snakes. It seems to me that Christianity contradicts natural law.
Let me just point out that what we pay into social security doesn't come close to what we receive. My father gets $1,600+ a month from SSI and he didn't pay 1/8 of that.
Social Security has a surplus of ZERO, every penny was spent the year it was collected. Take a piggy bank, put money in it, then take it out and spend it. But keep counting the money you added, ignore completely that you spent it, that's Social Security. SOCIAL SECURITY IS COMPLETELY BROKE, THERE IS NO MONEY... FUCK YOUR IOUs. STOP TALKING ABOUT A SURPLUS THAT DOES NOT EXISTS. Fuck, why are people so stupid, it's spent, it's gone, there's no fucking money in it.
@greedyfoot All that yelling and yet you are still wrong. SS has 2.7 TRILLION surplus. Go to the government website or read the report that comes in your yearly SS updates.
@derberg19486 The report is money taken in by Social Security vs the money spent on Social Security, it ignores the money taken out for everything else. Congrats, you think the paper with the amounts added is the actual money. Congress spent all 2.7 trillion already. It was spent the year it was collected. You are why it was 'yelled', damnit, it was spent, it's in the records, it's been talked about, it isn't some super secret.
@dffykvn First, what... didn't mention foreign obligation, even if it is less than 30% of total national dept - most US dept is owed to Americans) Second, Money Owed is not Mo
he does make a good point.
Men should probably not be allowed to make the decision for women when it comes to something like abortion.

Tuuliska 10 months ago
> In my personal opinion (feel free to disagree, obviously), social democracy should be called the centre of the left-right spectrum. Seriously, trying to make a compromise between the rightist system and the leftist ideology; if that isn't centrist, what is?
Also, it's not just a left-right line: there's more to the political spectrum than that. There's also individualism versus communitarism which is the reason for the conservatives' inconsistency on the "big government" argument.
Tuuliska 10 months ago
@Tuuliska There are very good 'conservative' values which I agree with Cenk on, such as, competition results in product diversity and innovation. In todays world, Conservative means corporatist, so when Cenk and I say 'true conservative values' we wholeheartedly disagree with the republican party, because the republicans aren't conservative, they're corporatist. one can argue what America is, but at its current state, its communist for the top 10%, fascist for the bottom 90%. Corporatist state.

It‘s interesting how liberals scream about how corporations spend so much money to get Republicans elected. Yet in the same breath, Dems praise labor unions as real people -- completely ignoring the “corporations” that employ them and the astronomical amounts corporate UNIONS spend to elect Democrats.

Cenk is such a grandstanding loudmouth.
Tha'ts just TYT propoganda
hofifut 10 months ago
@hofifut you're still bitching about marriage? grow the fuck up, there's much bigger problems facing the country than retarded social issues.
803brando 10 months ago
@803brando
You're the one who should grow up
hofifut 10 months ago
@hofifut SSI= Social Security Insurance. Social security is an insurance. If you wreck your car and have car insurance. Are you sucking the tit of the insurance company by having them pay for the accident? Of course not because you paid your premiums. Same with Social Security, you paid premiums all your life to an insurance to ensure a nominal wage when you could no longer work. The money is owed and to let the Government commit fraud with this insurance is wrong. The issue is theft of funds.
Fr33d0m4a11 10 months ago
@Fr33d0m4a11 The insurance company would think you're sucking on their tit and if you have a large enough claim they'll have their investigator try to find any loophole they can to ratfuck you....errr in my experience at least.
dffykvn 10 months ago
@dffykvn Well thats called insurance fraud when insurance companies refuse to pay their claims. I see it the same when Republicans try to violate the claim with SSI. Its insurance fraud. They cant refuse to pay claims just because they dipped into the pool and stole the money out of the pool. Plus Im personal against the FICA cap because the middle class and poor have to pay to their last dollar. Therefore so should the wealthy.

Capng123 10 months ago
@Capng123
Why does that make me conservative?
hofifut 10 months ago
@hofifut I made a statement of fact. And the only way you would find it insulting would be if you were a conservative.
Obama has stated publically on several occaisons he's not in favour of same sex marriage, only watered down civil unions. That puts him effectively to the right of Simpson because unlike a lot of other political issues same sex marriage has no middle ground and is essentially binary, ie to NOT be against is effectively to be FOR it, whether or not you explicitly say so.
Capng123 10 months ago
@Capng123
Just because you state you say the facts, doesn't mean it is so
hofifut 10 months ago
@hofifut You seem to be making a dedicated effor to NOT understand this, so I'll explain it one more time before I give up on you: Yes, Simpson did not say he was for it but he didn't say he was against it either. Obama HAS SAID he's against it, explicitly. Those are the facts. That puts him to the right of Simpson.
You may choose to reinterpret that to fullfil this apparent psychological need of yours to lock Obama into the left in spite of his actions but that doesn't alter the reality.

Social Security has a surplus of ZERO, every penny was spent the year it was collected. Take a piggy bank, put money in it, then take it out and spend it. STOP TALKING ABOUT A SURPLUS THAT DOES NOT EXISTS. Fuck, why are people so stupid, it's spent, it's gone, there's no fucking money in it.

@derberg19486 The report is money taken in by Social Security vs the money spent on Social Security, it ignores the money taken out for everything else. You are why it was 'yelled', damnit, it was spent, it's in the records, it's been talked about, it isn't some super secret.
