not sure why people always think Kirk is the best guitarist ever. He is the guitarist in a very famous band, yes . . but he always does the same lame solos and delivers his stuff without much feeling. James is a great composer and a much more talented musician than Kirk. So is this girl!

Although he is not a technical wizard like shredders like Paul Gilbert or Petrucci or whoever the hell else, he as very memorable solos that fit the songs perfectly. That is more important than anything else when it comes to being a talented musician... IMO

@leatherwings007 Have to agree with you. In the amateur world, you see a lot of lead guitar players shredding to the very top of their ability 100% of the time. They do it through vocals, rhythm, intros, everything. The problem is, you lose track of their talent because you can't tell the difference between their solos and the rest of the song. You rarely see this among professional musicians who understand that showmanship comes from a lighter touch and not trying to show off all of the time.

@leatherwings007 Don't get me wrong . . I love Metallica . . I grew up on that stuff and have experienced them live quite a few times. I was just a bit disappointed in Kirk live, that's all. I do play guitar myself but sadly quite far from this level. My talent is rather limited unfortunately :( But I have played enough to know that the same notes can be played in as many different ways as there will ever be guitarists to play them. In pure delivery Kirk just isn't that fantastic.

@Seebergster /agree. But understand that Metallica is a band more about its lead man than it is about a particular player of an instrument. This is why they wouldn't take Les Claypool on bass. They don't want any instrument to overshadow James. They simply can't have a virtuoso on guitar. If they did, they would be a completely different kind of band.
