@TheMsGemstone been through same experience although just recently with my dad. This song brings a sense of joy to me in his rememberance. I hope all is well now with you my friend and the music always will be there to lift you.
I'm still waiting for more, Sweet....have you got anything from Darryl Kromm's band before SA??? I'd love to know :) still loving this, every single day :)
Awesome post, thanks! When I was 15 years old, this was my favorite song on earth. Reap the Wild Wind by Ultravox was No. 2, and Icicle Works Whisper to a Scream was 3rd. New Wave was awesome!
Not long before my father abandoned me , he made me listen to this song , I was maybe 11. I'm 16 now , I will never forgive him for what he did, but I still thank him to make me know what real music is.
@MrAllDayEveryDay1 I remember being in the old 'Copa' club in Toronto one night in the mid 80's and the lead singer of Strange Advance was there and out of the blue introduced himself to me and I said: "yeah, good band from Vancouver" Also remember being there on certain nights where I met Mark Holmes from Platinum Blonde and Gowan...those were the days...
I am terrified of flying...so whenever I have to "take off" I set my I-Pod to this song, I take a very deep breath, close my eyes and just....let it happen.

i used to be a huge sci-fi fan before the market was saturated with variants on limited themes, and this song summed up what drew me in. hope, ambition, a touch of tristesse for what is lost in the transition from past to future. also, a lot of other eighties music, especially with synth, is almost jarring in it's failure to age gracefully. this song still presents as clean and smooth. your slideshow choices were a successful complement to the song. thank you
@transfoby Amen to that, I remember my father used to swim out to the ships in English Bay from Kitsilano beach and sit on the anchor chains, rest a while and then swim back. Years later when I took my daughter to the same beach we had to check the daily "Fecal Coliform Count" (number of turds per gallon of water) before swimming. What was once a beautiful city has now become a toilet an intoxicating combination of pollution, self interest and superficiality, World's Away from its former self.
@mysweeteventhorizon The fecal coliform count was high for a number of years. in more recent years it has gone and stayed well below the safe level for all swimming activities thanks to improved waste management and a very strong push to educate boaters about waste disposal. Calling the beautiful city of Vancouver "an intoxicating combination of pollution" is at minimum misleading and more realisticly idiotic. The self interest and superficiality is the world we live in today. Not just Vancouver
@transfoby Agreed. Beautiful city geographically and a much "nicer" city back in 89' when I moved here, but no so much today. As this city has grown, so have attitudes of ignorant, know-it-all, snotty, money-grubbing arrogance. Do not mean to be negative, just saying it the way it is.
Wow! I too have been searching for this song for over 20 years! I could not believe that I finally found it! The slides are amazing! Beautifully done! This song has alluded me for so long, I am almost at a loss for words. I wish we could bring back all our beloved 80's bands. Those were much happier times back then. Thank you for bringing back yesterday, today and tomorrow, with hopes for a better future for us all. Thanks again, you have made someone very happy! :)
This music makes for a great background and adds clarity to those trips we take down memory lane as we visit those people and places that, when touched again through the haze of distance and the passage of time, we hear the laughter, feel the touch of those long since gone and those far away.... it brings a smile to our faces and sends a surge of warmth up our spine....then we look to the future for the friends and moments that await ....
crap I just realized somethng...atheists don't believe in God cause they think that a god would stop murders and horrible crimes from happening in the first place...my apologies to you guys...
I have been looking for the name of this song since I heard it about 20 years ago. Never could find it. It was taped from the radio and I acquired the cassette, but the announcer never said who the artists were.
It took over 20 years but I finally have it. It's beautiful!
Excellent post. I was living in FL at the time. WSHE was playing the Cars, AC/DC, Cream and the Stones, but still played this song. It has a haunting sound to it, so immediately bought the albumn and still have it to this day. Just a very unique and romantic song. Thanks again for posting it.
@annerenzo I still have this album and I do find it haunting also. This is an ageless song. It was basically part of the 80s Neo Romance music. I miss those days... :(

Definitely an under-rated Canadian band. But Canadian Bands usually don't make it big unless they crack the American market first. THEN and only then are they accepted in the Canadian market. A pity, but that's the way it usually is.
@acadianfever , Unfortunately you are right, bands like The Tea Party, Tom Cochrane, Rush and many others are left by the wayside as if briliance and creative talent have no place in the musical equation.
Instead we are left adrift on a sea of musical mediocrity with the vomitious drivel of the vain and talentless like Britney Spears along with nauseating, eye watering shots of her genitals thrown in for variety.......Long Live America!!!....Jerry Springer for President!!!...
Thanks...appreciate the compliment....as for God.....I am sure he's not offended......Merry Christmas to all!!!...and the very best of health, happiness and good fortune to everyone in the New Year!!!
Don't get me wrong, I believe in A God, just not the one the Christian church's seem to shamelessly exploit for donations and stores use for merchandising.
You to have a very Merry X-mas and best of luck to you and yours in the New Year!
The Christian Church doesn't endorse any kind of exploitation. But some people use the Church as a means for their own purposes. Remember Jim & Tammy Baker?
I am not saying that every single member of the church does this, I'm just saying that religion as a whole as caused a lot more bad, in my opinion, then good. The conflicts that these opposing fronts have caused have been the sites for millions of graves. I wish we would all just stop senselessly arguing over who's unprovable entity is the right one and just get along.
Fair enough: but in most situations, the "bad apples" get most of the attention. The law-abiding people, whatever their creed, tend to do a LOT more good that they're given credit for.
I don't doubt it, but people don't need to be religious to do good. A lot of my friends mis-read there religion and use it as an excuse to be lazy and not help out as much as they should thinking it will be taken care of when it is by some higher power when it's really teaching them to act for themself's.
But I get your point, I'm just saying I'm not all bad just because I don't believe in some all powerful being that will punish me for doing bad things. I'm good for the sake of it, not to please some all powerful overseer.
You seem to argue that religion can cause bad while ignoring the fact that thousands have been slaughtered in the name of atheism. Atheists have slaughtered millions in the name of Communism. The Reign of Terror during the French Revolution was brought on in the name of Atheism. You also ignore all the good that people do in the name of "religion", such as Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Buddha and Jean Vanier...
Your rambling for no reason and about nothing. I never commented that religion could not bring about good, in fact I attend my church to help with the support programs. Also the reign of terror helped move about the french revolution, while I get your point that was ultimately positive.
Does anyone have "Nor Crystal Tears" by Strange Advance? Been waiting for it to show up for a long time, I need to know what language is spoken in the start of the song.
The best straight up Rock, ,maybe the best music in the world comes out of this Country. Listen over and over. Seperate the instruments. The slide on nearly every bass note. The synth work, the keyboard/drum shuffle. Yes this is Canadian, EH!!!!!
@oldetownecoffee1 This stuff is wonderful. Back then you still had the New Wave influence happening. I think the Canadian bands aligned them selves with more of the European sound. I think in large part it was very much a "wanna be" sound at the time. And no disrespect intended. But listening to this today you realize how beautifully constructed it is. Very unique and original stuff. Where has inspired music like this gone today?
As Canadian as Tim Horton's coffee, as Canadian as the game of basketball, as Canadian as the discovery of insulin and its cure or relief of diabetes, a Canadian as the Hudson's Bay, as Canadian as the French part of Canada bitching and whining about being unloved and unwanted by the "English Pigs" of the rest of Canada....as Canadian as back-bacon and Molson's beer.....as Canadian as some of the best damn soldiers the world has ever seen.......yes!!!...they are Canadian!!!!
i have this album on vinyl. i dont have any way of playing it. i was told to check youtube. HERE IT IS!! takes me back to high school. reminds me of past people and events. the slide show is great!!
Thanks,as for your lack of turntable check out the second hand stores and charity shops there are usually turntables of excellent quality and in pretty good condition to be had for pennies on the dollar....besides some vinyl is making a sort of cult-following comeback...
It is possible to transfer LPs onto iPods. Husband does it somehow and they sound fab. That said, whenever we have a party we usually start with iPod music and then go old school with the Pioneer turntable at the end of the night.
I don't want to seem unhelpful but it might be easier if you seek out a quality 2nd hand turntable shop and get them to talk you through the process. They might even run a transfer service or refer you to someone. It involves a quality turntable, software and IT knowhow.
A couple of years ago I bought a jazz LP (for some reason it never made it to CD) from Amazon. I was able to find a place in my home city (Ottawa, ON) that transferred LPs to CDs. If you could have that done, then the rest would be easy.
Having said that, it annoys me greatly that Strange Advance isn't in iTunes.
God is your finest imagination

I may not be religious but I've read the bible.

And people don't need to be relgious to do bad either...Was Stalin religious?
Marikafan 2 years ago
XD Yes he was =P
But I get your point, I'm just saying I'm not all bad just because I don't believe in some all powerful being that will punish me for doing bad things. I'm good for the sake of it, not to please some all powerful overseer.
fault3k 2 years ago
You seem to argue that religion can cause bad while ignoring the fact that thousands have been slaughtered in the name of atheism. Atheists have slaughtered millions in the name of Communism. The Reign of Terror during the French Revolution was brought on in the name of Atheism. You also ignore all the good that people do in the name of "religion", such as Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Buddha and Jean Vanier...
Marikafan 2 years ago
Your rambling for no reason and about nothing. I never commented that religion could not bring about good, in fact I attend my church to help with the support programs. Also the reign of terror helped move about the french revolution, while I get your point that was ultimately positive.

The best straight up Rock, ,maybe the best music in the world comes out of this Country. Listen over and over. Seperate the instruments. The slide on nearly every bass note. The synth work, the keyboard/drum shuffle. Yes this is Canadian, EH!!!!!

@2009thesinger
This and Glass Tiger's "Thin Red Line" were two of my favorite songs.
Now, for some reason, everyone now expects Canadian bands to sound like Nickelback, Sum 41, or Bare Naked Ladies.
oldetownecoffee1 1 year ago
@oldetownecoffee1 This stuff is wonderful. Back then you still had the New Wave influence happening. I think the Canadian bands aligned them selves with more of the European sound. I think in large part it was very much a "wanna be" sound at the time. And no disrespect intended. But listening to this today you realize how beautifully constructed it is. Very unique and original stuff. Where has inspired music like this gone today?

Strange advance. Now are they a Canadian band?
unhooked25 2 years ago
As Canadian as Tim Horton's coffee, as Canadian as the game of basketball, as Canadian as the discovery of insulin and its cure or relief of diabetes, a Canadian as the Hudson's Bay, as Canadian as the French part of Canada bitching and whining about being unloved and unwanted by the "English Pigs" of the rest of Canada....as Canadian as back-bacon and Molson's beer.....as Canadian as some of the best damn soldiers the world has ever seen.......yes!!!...they are Canadian!!!!

Excellent Post....
Is it possible to have your husband PM me or post his technique/process and a list of the equipment used...Thanks!!!
mysweeteventhorizon 2 years ago
I don't want to seem unhelpful but it might be easier if you seek out a quality 2nd hand turntable shop and get them to talk you through the process. They might even run a transfer service or refer you to someone. It involves a quality turntable, software and IT knowhow.

A couple of years ago I bought a jazz LP (for some reason it never made it to CD) from Amazon. I was able to find a place in my home city (Ottawa, ON) that transferred LPs to CDs. If you could have that done, then the rest would be easy.
Having said that, it annoys me greatly that Strange Advance isn't in iTunes.
