  • Movie bob has a youtube channel?! must... subscribe...

  • moviebob, question:

Of the two, which is better: Watchmen, or the Dark Knight?

  • Ah, "Watchmen", nothing splits people right down the middle like this little film. I just have one piece of advice if you plan on seeing this film and have read the graphic novel. DON'T THINK ABOUT THE BOOK. If the book does not exist in your mind when you see it, this IS a masterpiece. If it does, the movie sucks. The book is still better, but for cramming the book's entire message in a feature-length film, it couldn't have been done better.

  • Hi Bob, this is Dave. I need you to go ahead and flush the warehouse. If you could do that, it would be great. Thanks...

  • I wish you would continue to upload your reviews to youtube or something, that piece of shit escapist site doesn't load for half the world (yes, seriously)

  • I just watched the review, and I am sorry, he is just wrong. The actors are awesome and the visuals are awesome. the music is horrible, and the ending is horrible. Not that he changed it a bit, that is fine by me. Hell, it is a bit better. But he moves on so fast past the moral ambiguity that is retained at the end of the novel. Its like "should he have nuked all those cities?" and instantly its like "...happy love story ending!" ruins the entire theme of the movie!

  • Any chance of doing a review of the movie explaining the depth and resonance of it? I watched the film and didn't think much. I feel I just didn't get it, or didn't care. Can you change my opinion?

I'm sure others would like to know, or others to use as a reference of why this film is a masterpiece. Thanks.

  • damn escapist not working!

  • People stop comparing it to the book.

Let me ask you; have you read the books that Fight Club ,Shawshank ,Fear and Loathing etc are based on? No? Because they are only walls of text without brightly coloured pictures? So how can you jugde those movies then?

As someone who loves good MOVIES I say it's a masterpiece and much more important is the effect it could have had on the film industry (as Bob pointed out) had you all not geeked out so hard. film critics failed hard as well (mostly).

  • Umm... each of the books of the movies you mentioned ARE considered better than the film...

  • did I say that the movies were better than the books they are based on? no! I'm just saying that for some reason, with this movie EVERYBODY is comparing it to the book. with the movies mentioned above, that didn't happen nearly as much. That way they didn't have to "live up" to anything.

I just think that a lot more people could enjoy this movie if it didnt get so many pissy reviews by people comparing it to the book. The comic book fans held it back so to speak IMO.

  • I concur. Watchmen is the pinnacle of the graphic novel medium, so any translation into other mediums is bound to be less than perfect to the book. I was actually pleased by the movie, and felt that, short of a 12 hour cut, this movie is frankly the best we're going to get.

  • that's fine, I don't think that what you said goes against what I said. I'm talking about people giving it harsh negative reviews with elusive arguments. yours is adequate and reasonable. I never said the movie was better than the book, maybe that's where some of the confusion comes from.

I have this theory that there are legit reviewers out there (like you) and those who just want to show their "talent" in review-writing and try to gain recognition by bashing or praising controversial films

  • OK I'm sure this guy has read all of those books, because if you look at a lot of the stuff he does he mentions books all the time, for instance in his review for UP on the escapist, he mentions "The Heart of Darkness" for god sakes, so I think this guy knows his stuff when it comes to games, books, and movies.

  • Chill dude, I'm totally behind Moviebob. My criticism goes towards the usaul "Doesn't live up to the novel"-crybabies

  • Liked the review, going to watch the movie this week. just finished the comic

  • DEFINITELY not a masterpiece, not the kind that will become classic viewing years from now. But it was awesome

I saw it once, but I really want to see it again now that my expectations are done with.

It was good, but the acting was not very good, and all those scenes that hit so hard in the book didn't cut it in the movie. most of them, unfortunately. I don't know what you're raving about in your review, because it's not a masterpiece

But I will go watch it again and maybe think otherwise

  • Why it's not a masterpiece is because all the deep shit that hit home and made the Watchmen novel a masterpiece did not hit with the same intensity as the novel. Like, partly because of the actors. A lot of the scenes were staged straight from the book, but there was no strength, and without reading the book, they sometimes seemed to come out of nowhere

If the whole movie had flowed like the intro credits, then you'd have a masterpiece

  • I'm half and half about this move. I get the idea and everything. The only problem i had with it was it needed editing.

Sure the characters can be complex and all but come on they where saying the same shit over and over, and i got the point the around the second time.

It was like watching a T.V. show that recaps everything that has happen. Nice if you don't watch each episode in a row, but really annoying watching them back to back.

Just needed to get to the points fast. IMO

  • I had a blast watching watchmen. :)

  • a question to bob:

should i finish the comic and then go see it? or should i go see it right now?

  • Eh. Movie is a movie, book is a book. But book will be out forever, movie won't. I'd say go see it, but work EXTRA hard to seperate them as two different things in your mind's eye.

  • I think I can identify the problem with the movie:

The book was a mystery/drama comic with bits of action thrown in. The movie was an action flick with bits of mystery and drama thrown in.

Oh, and am I the only one who thought Jackie Earl Haley's voice was awful in this movie? Rorschach is supposed to talk in a creepy MONOTONE, not do an impression of Christian Bale's overcompensatory Batman voice.

Oh, and by the way... I WANT MY SQUID!

  • SPOILER

I think one of the little things the film does "better" is to hammer-home the concept that Rorschach is bascially full of shit. He wanders around talking to himself like some bitter, jaded, urban veteran... but when we see him he's a developmentally-arrested little creep BARELY over 30, and all his "code" is just an excuse to work out his mommy issues on the bodies of criminals. Once we finally see him, I think the "manchild doing a Clint impression" voice is wholly appropriate.

  • I still think he was a badass in the movie. I know he has issues but basically he does what a lot of us always have wanted to do. I think I read the comic first time when I was 11 or something and getting bullied alot in school I always though Rorschach was cool Of course I didn't get the narrative of the comic completely but I did as I grew older.

  • Eh, I think the book did that just fine, with his choice of words when defending the Comedian during his initial conversation with Laurie and Dr. Manhattan.

Oh, and I don't mean to nit-pick, nor do I wish to charge you with defending all aspects of it, but I do have another little problem that I wish more people would address: When Dr. Manhattan vaporizes people in the movie, why do we often see blood and guts flying everywhere? Not only does the comic not have it, it makes no sense whatsoever.

  • @Sylocat I disagree entirely...The movie was a drama/mystery (in that order) with bits of action thrown in. Or at least it is if you compare it to, say, the X-men movie. Or anything with Jason Statham in it.

  • It's hard to explain why it's so good. I also have the feeling that this movie will grow on people and become a cult classic. It begs to be seen at least twice, but too many people won't even watch it once :(

  • I totally agree with Bob. Not much else to say.

  • Yes.

  • I think watchmen is great too but by making your review overwhelmingly positive you kind of made yourself come off as a fanboy. Sorry.

  • you haven't watched many of his videos have you?

  • i agree

  • Good review, though I still think this movie is pretty over-rated.

The acting was mostly mediocre, except for Rorschach who was pretty much the only great actor of the bunch. How can you call Snyder a good or visionary director when he copies panel by panel almost every scene from the novel, not to mention his trademark tacky slow-motion and poor choice of soundtrack in fight scenes.

The writing that wasn't copy-pasted from the comic was sub par and sounded awkward.

  • I thought Dr. Manhattan and Nite Owl were both pretty good too (at least in terms of acting), but Ozymandias delivered all his dialogue in a tone of voice more suited to a '60s Bond villain.

  • the movie IS a masterpiece. gotta agree with bob!

  • Yay. The bad accent is gone. Just what was that about, anyway?

  • His natural accent. He's from New Jersey, after all. Cut him some slack. He was just tired of hiding it for a bit.

  • thats not a damn jersey accent

  • Bostonian. My bad.

  • Thank you, Bob.

That was the first genuinely excited review I've seen for the movie that wasn't from someone attached to it. I just wish it were a few weeks earlier when it mattered more.

While I don't agree with you entirely, I will say that I loved it and I thought it had alotta balls (not just the glowing blue kind either) for a superhero film. It's just a damn shame that more people wanna pay to see semi-entertaining crap then something with this much substance.

  • my favorite movie i seen in the theather since batman

  • i really think that the escapist is abusing your talents.

you have done some great reviews since you joined them, but i cant find them on your site. i gave up watching your stuff a few weeks in to the "escapist show".

why dont you have your own channel?

you might not be the most consistent vlogger out there (making a video once a month) but so what, your content merits to be easily found.

  • YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

i love the movie and i love your clips so this is gonna be awesome

  • I completely agree with you here. This movie is a masterpiece. It has it flaws but still it's one of the best movies of all time.

  • whoa whoa dude the review was good, but got dang it you had to say all the actors were great and it was like you said "Niagara Falls" so slowly I turn to kick you cause Silk Specter II was the worst one, I couldn't connect with her at all. Rorschach does deserve and Oscar but that woman couldn't get anything for him. she even sucked the life out of her scenes with Nite owl II and that sex scene dear lord that was too long.

but hey it's your opinion can't change it so good luck.

  • I agree, the Silk Spectre II actress was awful. I wasn't the biggest fan of Laurie to begin with, but the movie made it even harder to like her because of that woman.

  • for some reason, every time i try to go to the escapist show, it can never load the page. I even clicked the link on the side and it didn't work. I never have problems with any other site. Can some one help me on this one?

  • Great review. You did a great Rorschach voice by the way.

  • I knew you were going to do it! Thank you!

  • Meh, it had too much Slow Motion and not enough squid, sorry Bob, I'll stick to the comic. The opening credits are sweet though.

    Keep them postin'! =)

  • You have to letter space that typography dude. The font doesn't work alone.

  • Finally ) Was really waiting for this )

  • SAWEEET!
