@Revoltingmachine the reason why i hate it is that it was the complete opposite of a good star trek film. unlike the star trek 2,3, and 4. which had intense moments and great acting 5 just seems like the exact opposite of those films. the thing i hate most are the sences where kirk just goes crazy for no real reason. the sense where kirk is yelling at spock is a great example. kirk didn't even lose it when his son died. but it is your opinion. not mine
The only two movies prior to this one where they didn't use that scene of the Enterprise at warp (2:23) were TMP and TSFS. The clip is badass, nonetheless.
At 0:22 you can hear the sound of the Tie Fighter's Laser Cannons from Star Wars. I guess ILM didn't have enough time to make different sound effects!
I saw all the original series movies and this is the worst one. I mean Kirk becomes more an angry old man, and Scotty banging his head is just the worst gag and it's as if they did give the audience any credit. It's just bad. And they spend 10 minutes singing "row your boat". WTF?
I love how Star Trek deals with the reality that God is only a myth. Despite how great the story was, there was not enough real action. I love to see bloodied bodies fly across the room, deadly explosions, fierce starship fighting and all that neat stuff in Star Trek like parts 2, 3 and 6. The best in the series.
I just rewatched this one again and, although the movie had a godawful plot and some pretty hokey moments, it did have that 80's sci fi movie vibe. That made it at least SEMI-tolerable... unlike Insurrection, that is.
Aye, I feel ST5 gets far too much hassle from fans. Laurence Luckinbill gave one of the more memorable performances in the ST movie series, and the film itself is good light-hearted fun.
this movie could of been so much better if it wasnt rushed and paramount insisting on added humour just because of star trek 4 if you read the making of star trek the final frontier by shatners daughter you will find that he had to make do with second best or scrap ideas out altogether for a start he wanted rock monsters to come out of the ground at the end but the special effects team couldnt handle it and sean connery was supposed to play sy-bok
I don't feel this movie was as bad as a lot of fans think it is, but it does feature some awful attempts at humor. The problems with this film can be summed up in three words: Shatner, Shatner, and Shatner!
ok ok when I read the reviews, I just thought WHAT, people don't like this but they liked the one about whales?! no it's not the best movie I've ever seen but I definitely enjoyed it. better than all its antecedent films in fact, with the exception of TWOK.
@genericusername337 especially because it reminded me of TOS, it fit in like another episode. no other ST film so far had done that. bringing back the "where no man has gone before" element boldly, and kirk's philosophy on humankind and God, like seen in Who Mourns for Adonais, which is one of my favorite episodes!
Gene Roddenberry said that this movie wasn't canon (after it failed), but after he died and his son inherited the TREK franchise, the son overrode what GR said and declared it canon (along with the Animated Series & Stare Trek: Voyager's ep. "Threshold").
I saw this on Opening Night, June 9th, 1989. Torrential Rains that night at Epic Proportion. It was my First Date that Nioght with someonme I almost Married and Lost : ( Rain got so bad i had to have the rest of my date in my car. It rained so hard my date and i could not get out of the car ! We hung out for over and hour in my car. Star Trek 5 had Mega-Potential to Pump Fresh Story Material into the TOS Trek Film series. But the chance was Blown by a Story that kept trying to Sound Important
@cb11082 Guess what, they used the TNG sets in Trek 6 too. In Trek's 8 and 9, they used the Voyager sets for parts of the movie such as sickbay (the Voyager's sickbay) and Troi's quarters in trek 9 were a redress of Janeway's ready room.
I will always love this movie. Besides Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, this is the only movie that really has the Enterprise boldly going "Where no man has gone before".
I remember meeting Spice Williams (who played the Klingon Vixis in the film), and I was surprised to find out that she is not only a body builder and stuntwoman but that she is conversant in sign language.
Lolz i first watched this movie when i was like 6, and the only part i can remember to this day, is Scotty saying: "I know this ship like the back of my hand." BONK! Lolz
Why not watch for yourself instead of trusting someone else's opinion? I personally feel that the first six Star Trek movies minus "The Voyage Home" are great.
@TheBigPicProductions Almost agree, TVH was fab in my opinion, why do you dislike, was it the humor, being earth based, time travel or the whales..do tell
@qland There's nothing Star Trek about it. The Sci-Fi element is so weak and there's no interaction among the crew that I feel is even close to believable. The whale element makes me so upset that I won't watch that movie ever again. Star Trek V rules because it has the best performances by the cast, it's the funniest, has a great score and is very similar to an episode of the original series, which was missing from the first six movies, although I love all of them, plus VI, except for IV.
@TheBigPicProductions I agree the Whale aspect is so strange. The comedy in TVH was really the only thing going for it, even that doesn't help the picture. I am not a trekkie, but the films I really enjoy. I noticed that TVH really stands out from the rest.
@agricola I agree but I've always had a problem with Sybok thinking he could take over a ship with a crew of 430 (as far as he knew) with a handful of sand people.
Whats more.........ILAM was not available at the time of this film, they were too busy making other films..........so the special effects were also made by nobody's.
Star Trek V was the result of bad timing........and bad direction. It was made during the 1988 US writers guild strike, and subsequently the script and plot were written by nobody's. There is no clearly defined line from beginning to end, and the whole thing is a muddled misfire. As for Shatners direction, I bet he wishes he left it in Leonard's hands after all! Hopefully this will be the last time a film company promises someone the directing role as a reward for being in a movie.
I like the original crew movies, but wasn't a big fan of the television series. Next Generation, I loved the television series but wasn't crazy about the movies.
the starfleet uniforms in the kirk movies are the best in the series at least the last couple, they look so cool in silhouette the bellbottomy pants and the vests n stuff, i cant imagine why they would dismiss uniforms like this and lower themselves to the cheap crap in the next generation
@UniteForgetLeftRight The uniforms in the Films were considered to militaristic by various people - inc Gene Rodenberry if I remember correctly. Personally I thought they where freakin awesome! The BSG Uniforms always remind me of the ST:Films uniforms.
And one of the best lines was cut out of the film: "What if the Great Barrier wasn't designed to keep us out, but to keep that thing in. Doesn't that imply the existence of a greater power in the universe?"
I would have bought the Sybok storyline better if he wasn't Spock's halfbrother, but instead the only thing closest he had outside of his family to a best friend (until Kirk) that he had growing up. Sybok representing the one person who understood him. I wish they would have brought that out more in the story so you could really understand why Spock would choose to betray his captain and his friend.
I always found it irritating that in the Star Trek trailers (II and V particularly) they use the sound effect for a laser blast from Star Wars rather than the one in the actual film.
All credit to Channel 4(Television channel in Britain) to have shown all the feature films from the Motion Picture 1979 to "Nemesis" 2003 on 10 consecutive Saturdays.
Now this weekend, they are showing them all 10 films over 2 days!!!!
I may be wrong, and I'm not trying to start a religious conflict on Youtube, but I think this movie may have been partly meant as a commentary on the ills of religious dogmatism. This would, in fact, be in the spirit of the original Star Trek series, which was partly a commentary on social and political tolerance.
@StoneKnivesBearskins That no longr applies. "Nemesis" was an even-numbered movie and was horrible - but JJ Abrahams new "TREK" was an odd-based number and was a hit.
Even though this film is generally considered to be shit, there are things I like about it. The finding god idea, syboks character, the revealing the past bit. A few more rewrites and they could have done something great with it. The effects and bad jokes let it down, not to mention uhuras dance scene. The klingons are the wimpies of the series, they should have used another enemy instead, the distance issue doesnt make sense etc..... But the idea at the heart of it is actually pretty decent,
such a shame a film wasnt made in the same league as undiscovered country while they were still young enough but its a ok sci fi - comedy :) the trailer sucks!!
I liked the movie because I liked the plot. They are trying to find God on a planet somewhere in outer space. They are not trying to find a black hole. They are not searching for a wormhole. It's the Final Frontier. They are going where no one has ever gone before.
You know what, there is always going to be people who will always hate the odd number Star Trek movies no matter how your try and explain it or justify it. So be it, most of you will always hate the 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 and even 10th films. I like them all even the screw up J.J. Abrams version. They are all good. Like Shatner said on SLN. "It's only a tv show"! Get a Life" (LoL) Just enjoy that they came back and gave us 6 original films and 5 extra movies.
I know allot of people love to bash this film and I must admit it didn't get me hooked the first time I saw it at the theater. But when I saw it several times I got to like it more. Yes there story is not cinematic value. This is more like an episode. Shatner didn't have ILM to do the special affects. I think the action is good and the story as enough to hook you. This is an adventure film which what Star Trek is about. All the Star Trek movies are great even the last one.
Kirk was an all american, Picard was shakespear-ean. Kirk was a joker, Picard was stringent.
One synopsis of the Kirk vs Picard debate I share lies within a generation gap. Maybe I prefered Picard because I was born in 1982, TNG started in '87......I love the film Generations, cos you get to see the two captains stuck in time.
Personally i believe any of the first six movies wipe the floor with Picard and his crew. The refit Enterprise had character - the old warhorse, and the crew - family. Picards ship was all show, and the crew seemed shallow, and separated somehow
@msinvincible2000 well i did see in one of the earliest TOS episodes that Spock and Uhura were doing a sort of playful duet with one another and hinted at the fact of a possible mutual attraction :)
@msinvincible2000 In the case of that movie, Spock wanted to create some sort of connection as he saw that he may be incable of love because, if you recall, his father stated that his marriage to Spock's mother only happened because it was logical not because he loved her. It would warp a child's psyche, even a Vulcan to believe that they could not love. Also, it's different timeline, so maybe there was something that didn't happen there that Spock Prime went through. I don't know.
wow, they just show you everything in this trailer, don't they?! O.O
oh and I really like this movie. i thought william shatner and the whole cast did a great job. and as always, false gods make interesting story lines.
Poor movie in an otherwise fantastic franchise. What I didn't like about this ine was the way Sulu turned against Kirk, Spock and McCoy. He would never have done that.
shatner couldnt make this film the way he wanted special effects teams were working on ghostbusters 2 and indiana jones and he was left with what was left of industrial light and magic and the executives enforced humour in the script as that made voyage home sucessful , at least star trek 6 made up for this mess still watchable though :)
The character moments in this movie were great. I liked how it was reminiscent of a TOS episode. They're going where no man has gone before and exploring the galaxy. It had its share of problems but I consider it a high budget 2 hr episode of the original series. Not quite movie caliber but enjoyable nonetheless.
@PROTENON I agree 100% with your comments. It was more like a tv episode for the 4 season. I liked the movie allot and it's one of my favorite after 6 and 2. Glad to see someone else shares the same opinion. Thanks Protenon for your positive comments on Star Trek 5.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
the god concept was interesting but shatner fucked it up. if you want to see how the god concept can be dealt with properly then watch my sci fi film COSMOSIS on my channel. it takes the basic premisal of star trek but takes it way further
I disagree. Kirk in his boy scout voice at that moment of celestial magnificense asking "Excuse me? What does -god- need with a starship?" is one of the greatest lines of the movie
@Essefen Yeah the message of the film and some of the lines were really great, also the scene where bones and spock discover there own past
but in general the movie sucked because it was so bad made and the story was stupid like nothing before
they fly to the center of the galaxy in like 1 day ... according to star trek usually they would need like 30 years or so for this at warp 9 I think? Cause Voyager could go about bit more than double distance in 70 years. and enterprise A is much slower hm
This could have been a good movie, but they try too put so many humorous moments in it that it ultimatley sinks the film. Its Trek cliche after Trek cliche. The story was somehow lost. Everytime Trek tries to do a movie that concentrates on exploring an alien life form than just an action shoot 'em up flick, it always fails spectacularly(i.e. The Motion Picture and Insurrection)
I agree about the excessive humour. It kind of felt like a sci-fi version 'Hot Shots.' They nearly hit the borderline, but I think it was still one of Star Trek's better films. Certainly better than the Motion Picture, and only a little better than Insurrection (I liked that one).
This movie is "cannon" so sorry to tell you that this is pure trek. yeah, the movie was not as violent as some would like to see, but it is Trek; at it's best.
Ironically, if you take what Star Trek is about (new life and new lifeforms...going boldly...you get the idea)..Star Trek V and Star Trek the Motion Picture are the truest to the principals of Star Trek.
Yes, part 5 has quite a few corny/problems, but there are some great parts to that movie. The scenes with Kirk McCoy and Spock camping are classic. Also, the scenes where Sybok are showing McCoy's pain is powerful.
Oh dude, you and me both. This is not exactly the best ST movie, but Generations was such bullshit. I hate the way they killed Kirk. I get the premise of it trying to hand over the franchise to TNG, but...no. That movie was bad. BAD.
what are you standing around for you dont know a jailbreak when you see one lol

can someone answer me this please
how come is these movies they look old yet, in star trek TOS they look so young and better looking?
Astronomer16 1 year ago
@Astronomer16 Because TOS was made in 1966 and this movie is made in 1989 . Do your Calculations :)

I liked the movie because I liked the plot. They are trying to find God on a planet somewhere in outer space. They are not trying to find a black hole. They are not searching for a wormhole. It's the Final Frontier. They are going where no one has ever gone before.

I liked the movie, but there were some phoney parts on it to, like some alien cat dancing on bar tables.

Hambag2009 2 years ago
Personally i believe any of the first six movies wipe the floor with Picard and his crew. The refit Enterprise had character - the old warhorse, and the crew - family. Picards ship was all show, and the crew seemed shallow, and separated somehow

in this movie you see Uhura is in love with ... Scotty!
In the TV series, there was often some inuendo about her and Sulu.
So, I don't really understand why in the new movie she has a love affair with Spock (who never showed interest in women)
msinvincible2000 2 years ago 10
Actually Spock showed slight interest in Christine Chapel in the episode "Amok Time"
Though I agree with the weird relationships with Uhura. :P
filecabinetwoesprod 2 years ago
@msinvincible2000 well i did see in one of the earliest TOS episodes that Spock and Uhura were doing a sort of playful duet with one another and hinted at the fact of a possible mutual attraction :)
MissWhiate 1 year ago
@MissWhiate she was just teasing him, just like Kirk or McCoy did very often.
msinvincible2000 1 year ago
@msinvincible2000 its cause he needed someone to hug him after his planet was destroyed, and kirk didnt like him yet :)
Jade10923 10 months ago
@msinvincible2000 In the case of that movie, Spock wanted to create some sort of connection as he saw that he may be incable of love because, if you recall, his father stated that his marriage to Spock's mother only happened because it was logical not because he loved her. It would warp a child's psyche, even a Vulcan to believe that they could not love. Also, it's different timeline, so maybe there was something that didn't happen there that Spock Prime went through. I don't know.

Poor movie in an otherwise fantastic franchise. What I didn't like about this ine was the way Sulu turned against Kirk, Spock and McCoy. He would never have done that.
Also the whole plot was weak and full of holes.

It was a foreshadowing of George Takei's feelings towards them...well, Shatner, specifically.

Lame trailer. The worst part was at 0:29.
CommissionerBele 2 years ago 4
shatner couldnt make this film the way he wanted special effects teams were working on ghostbusters 2 and indiana jones and he was left with what was left of industrial light and magic and the executives enforced humour in the script as that made voyage home sucessful , at least star trek 6 made up for this mess still watchable though :)
s1977spw 2 years ago 3
The character moments in this movie were great. I liked how it was reminiscent of a TOS episode. They're going where no man has gone before and exploring the galaxy. It had its share of problems but I consider it a high budget 2 hr episode of the original series. Not quite movie caliber but enjoyable nonetheless.
PROTENON 2 years ago 12
@PROTENON I agree 100% with your comments. It was more like a tv episode for the 4 season. I liked the movie allot and it's one of my favorite after 6 and 2. Glad to see someone else shares the same opinion. Thanks Protenon for your positive comments on Star Trek 5.

the god concept was interesting but shatner fucked it up. if you want to see how the god concept can be dealt with properly then watch my sci fi film COSMOSIS on my channel. it takes the basic premisal of star trek but takes it way further
MorrisIrvine 2 years ago
I disagree. Kirk in his boy scout voice at that moment of celestial magnificense asking "Excuse me? What does -god- need with a starship?" is one of the greatest lines of the movie
Essefen 2 years ago 24
@Essefen Yeah the message of the film and some of the lines were really great, also the scene where bones and spock discover there own past
but in general the movie sucked because it was so bad made and the story was stupid like nothing before
they fly to the center of the galaxy in like 1 day ... according to star trek usually they would need like 30 years or so for this at warp 9 I think? Cause Voyager could go about bit more than double distance in 70 years. and enterprise A is much slower hm
PredatorianStyl 1 year ago
Did Spock just tell a joke?
ob1benji1 2 years ago
This could have been a good movie, but they try too put so many humorous moments in it that it ultimatley sinks the film. Its Trek cliche after Trek cliche. The story was somehow lost. Everytime Trek tries to do a movie that concentrates on exploring an alien life form than just an action shoot 'em up flick, it always fails spectacularly(i.e. The Motion Picture and Insurrection)
007InMiami 2 years ago 3
I agree about the excessive humour. It kind of felt like a sci-fi version 'Hot Shots.' They nearly hit the borderline, but I think it was still one of Star Trek's better films. Certainly better than the Motion Picture, and only a little better than Insurrection (I liked that one).
MarissaEvans1987 2 years ago
This movie is "cannon" so sorry to tell you that this is pure trek. yeah, the movie was not as violent as some would like to see, but it is Trek; at it's best.
xxvtpatrick 2 years ago
This movie should be blasted out of a cannon. Even Roddenberry said it was apocryphal.
netgeak 2 years ago
You are probably correct. I didn't care for this movie. But I like star trek, and this was an another movie.
xxvtpatrick 2 years ago

BAD.
