  • Sally Gardens refers to the willows on the outskirts of villages to fasten thatching on their roofs. Young lovers used to meet there. At least my grandma said something along those lines. I've known this song since I was little. It's so pretty. I tried to get my High School Choir teacher to let us sing it, but I guess it wasn't her taste or something.

  • @mbagel469

That is a shame as it is a lovely song maybe she didn't see it as a choir song

  • I remember playing this song on the revorder in grade 4... Our music teacher later died... I played the clarinet while my teachers daughter sang... It was beautiful <3

thats the lovely sallies " so that's how the gardens got their name

  • they forgot all da rain and i should no

  • She bid me " take Love easy"(not take life easy"

    Still, beautiful, though? Eh?

  • Why do Irish people pronounce Devil "Divel"?

  • @relimes Being a divil, or getting up to divilment, is being mischievous. It may well have originated from people pronouncing 'devil' incorrectly, but it has its own meaning now :).

  • @relimes

They don't, unless you're talking to some bumbling farmer from the sticks.

  • Beautiful voice and images !! Phalaïna

  • And Shepherds we shall be

For thee, my Lord, for thee.

Power hath descended forth from Thy hand

Our feet may swiftly carry out Thy commands.

So we shall flow a river forth to Thee

And teeming with souls shall it ever be.

In Nomeni Patri Et Fili Spiritus Sancti."

  • sweet voice. beautiful...

  • donore

  • Holy shit ireland is beautifull !!!

  • Lovely version of this song.

I have great memories of the song. Cherril Slater, Tricia Woodcock and I sang it as the theme tune for the Dark Lady of the Sonnets, at Hinde House School in Sheffield, in about 1971. It was so beautifully sickly sweet with my harmony, that the school asked us to sing at School Speech Day, which I'm proud to say was held at Sheffield City Hall - I can therefore say I have performed on the same stage as The Beatles (but not necessarily at the same time)

  • I must sound like a weeny, but I nearly cried listening to this.... Such a beutiful song... I wish I could go to the land of my father's... This west US-bound middle-class kid will hafta stick with pictures...

  • I'm an O'Connor man, i belong in Roscommon. Hopefully I will be able to go someday.

  • @magua4 I live in Roscommon!

  • Often would have loved to know what Yeats would have thought of how a simple 2 verse poem which he first called "An old song re-sung" could have develope into this.

    Lovely thanks for the post

  • I love your music ! we play bluegrass i think it came from Celtic music

  • amazing ^^ 5*

  • fantastic

  • Aye greetings from ireland...I yield from dublin...how ye all wee lads and lass's doin?

  • @VincentReborn Worth moving there from the U.S.?

  • @VincentReborn

LOL you blatantly aren't, the Leprechaun speak gave you away nobody here talks like that, especially Dubliners...

  • Me great gran da passed away about 5 years ago at 108 he came over from ireland as a wee child before he passed he asked us to take his ashes and spread them in the irish sea shore took us about a year to get permission from the irish government but now he is forever in his home land.

  • My great grandfather came here in 1900. His brothers followed in April of 1912 but never reached our shore. A week later my grandmother was born. Once, in 1956 he went back for a visit, just that once. My grandmother visited Ireland a couple of times. My mother wanted to go but died before she could. I think we left something behind. Uncles lost to the deep never to grow old. I think we left something behind.

  • Few places better on earth than Ireland. I can't wait to go back again. Nice job. Thanks for posting.

  • Ireland is such a beautiful place. And the people are very friendly. I will fly there again in the near future.

    Just join the music...

    Greetings from Austria :-)

  • @DeNiBaErLi Just so you know, it's like a show called the Savage Eye said. We are a culture that does insult in a friendly way. We have a tendency to slag our friends. If an Irish person who's your friend says something like homo in greeting he could mean absolutely no offense. It's complicated but basically we insult our friends and mean no offense.

  • I hope in some day I can go there "Ireland"

  • Don't forget your umbrella!
