The letter M has nothing to do with the Em-Quad mate.
Check out any of your fonts and tell me which one has an Em-Quad that matches the letter M. Even more unlikely is to have an N that's actually half the width of the M in the same font.
I took printing in school back in 1971 thru 1974. First thing was learn the California Job case layout. Our clever old teacher made it easy and interesting to memorize it. VUTAR on the bottom, LMNHOYPW, [comma] in the middle, and BCDEISFG on the top line. How he explained it was~ the top line stood for "Be Careful Driving Elephants In Small Ford Garages", the middle row stood for "Let Me Now Help Out Your Punctuation With Comma. Can't remember the words for bottom row of letters.

Nice to see my old trade on the new information media. I have been a typesetter, linotype operator, paste-up and proofprinter, planner and plate maker and now i am retired-i feel like a museum piece with all these disapearing technics-thanks-bill de groot-the netherlands
the most educative video on letterpress i have ever seen. than you so much, really helped me understand the process for my DT coursework and also my AS/A level exam
I think letterpress'ing is fantastic, certainly an awesome docu' showing the actual in's & out's of letterpress printing. I learned afew key things there, to get me on my way to being a letterpress man myself. :D thanks
Thanks for sharing operational tips... "3 pieces of furniture to the edge of the chase". Too many letterpress videos are pre-occupied with traditionalizing or zooming on the wheels and "bite". This shows not just what a press can do but how a person can use a press. The gems shared here make a difference.
Thank you from the depths of the grease beneath my nails.
I have a printing business in NY on Long Island and I found this very interesting. I still like the quality that comes from the good old fashion printing press.
a valiant effort, but so much incorrect terminology. beware!

What kind if presses are you using? I've been trying to get my hands on a smaller, hand operated one instead of the massive, self operated ones.

Quads are not used for "kerning"....
"coppers & brasses... those are called "thin spaces"...
Turn the volume down to avoid mis-information....

@THEinterrobang Kern is the part of the type face that overhangs the actual body of the type. It was usually on fancy Italic roman type faces.....

Someday I'll utilize that diagram to organize my type in my case.
Someday I'll utilize my type and my press to make something awesome.

what? a teacher using one of your videos to teach her students how to use a letterpress at san francisco state?
i was sitting there and all of a sudden i thought "hm.. fall of autumn..coincidence?" until the credits rolled and i saw your name.
congrats. my teacher has shown this video to hundreds of Design and Industry students.
(she did say that she wished the guy would stop mumbling tho.. )
