@Kurgan28 I haven't listened to this album other than this song, but I listened to their newest one and I believe hospice is their masterpiece, once I listen to one song of that album, I can't not listen to the whole album, it's really amazing
Hm. Well, it'll take me a long time to find another band as magnificent as The Antlers. Completely in love with this band, I want them to come to Sweden so that I can see them live :D
@Tribune12345 sure. I've been learning songs by ear for years, I hate tabs cause they are wrong a lot of the time. Pretty much what I do is: begin a song, pause it when I hear a chord change, then play it again over and over until I "find" the first chord, I then repeat this process for every chord/note in the song until I have the whole thing down. Most songs aren't hard to learn, it just takes patience and determination. Also, the more you practice ear-training, the faster u can learn songs.
@Tribune12345 I hope that helps. Basically, it's play, pause, play, pause, repeat... Go with your gut, you'll know what sounds correct and what does not. If something sounds off, REALLY listen to the notes in the chord and you'll figure it out. Don't rely on tabs unless you are terribly stuck. At least that is one person's advice...
I tried your pause play method and I think it will eventually work. Unfortunately, I have trouble finding the initial chord in this song specifically.
Starting at :31, I attempted to play the chord on guitar just by ear and I can't figure it out. I thought it was A minor for a while but that seems to be off.
I also tried variations of C but I still can't determine the chord.
Any other advice regarding figuring out a chord (at least for this song) would be great!
@Tribune12345 this should help you get started on it: Am, Bm, Em, G... Am, Bm, Em, G (on this second one your pointer finger should be on the first fret of the B string, then let it off according to the rhythm he plays). at least this is what I got...
One more question though. How did you determine that the second chord is a Bm? Its not like its very common for an Am to go to Bm. Is it just the fact that you have been doing it by ear for a long time or do you have a teachable method?
@Tribune12345 it was just the chord that seemed to match the second chord they played. it was the chord that matched the best. there are no rules in music at all. you will often be surprised what you find out when you start to cover songs. I've covered hundreds of songs over the years - it helps you understand the boundlessness of musical possibilities. my only method is going with what I think sounds correct.
That's really hope-inspiring. I am far from musically inclined and I always assumed the only way to really learn music for someone like me is through theory.
If I just learn more chords and get them memorized, I should be able to just guess and check if nothing else. Thanks again!
@Tribune12345 theory can help but it is (to me) not the end all answer. I am self-taught and am doing fine. just learn all the basic chords (A-G), then all the minors (Am-Gm), and then you should be able to learn by ear 90% of pop or rock music. trust your gut.
@Tribune12345 I think I just got the next part too: G, D (formation of: 2nd fret on low E string, then 2nd fret on G string, and 3rd fret on B string), Em, D, C, G, D. so again it was, G, *D*, Em, D - C, G, D.
this is one of the most upbeat songs i have ever heard by the antlers, even though it has kinda sad lyrics
love it

Hospice is indeed a masterpiece, but I think this song is better than anything on that album. Which is saying something. I love this song so much.

@Kurgan28 This album is on par with Hospice, but doesn't receive as much love for some reason. But you definitely need to check it out.

I can't find tabs for this song anywhere!!!
Tribune12345 2 years ago
@Tribune12345 don't use unreliable tabs, use your ears, it's better and you teach yourself ear training.

@leraginasian I would LOVE to learn to do this. Any recommendations on how to determine the tabs by ear?

@Tribune12345
Using theory,
The song is in G Major. It starts on Am chord and turns to the Bm chord.
This makes sense because the A and B triads of the G Major Scale are minor.
so the progression would be
Verse: ii - iii - vi - I - ii - iii - vi - I
Chorus: I - V - vi -V - IV - I -V

@leraginasian the chorus is G, F sharp/D, Em, D, C, Bm, G.....different variation but same chord progression as in the song "Two" by them
urasalmongirlright 3 months ago
@Tribune12345 just remember that most songs are based on simple chords (i.e. Majors or Minors of any regular chord).
