  • I'm sure he gets all the women

  • oh also... does my shirt smell like chloroform?

  • did you say not to inhale it?

  • can i do this with bleach???

  • Where can i get Calcium Hypochlorite

  • @mcwario13 I got mine as pool super shock.

  • Chloroform is still an ingredient in some over the counter stuff in UK

  • does this napkin smell like chloroform to you?

  • THANKS FOR THIS!!! Defintely will master this by the end of the weekend

  • Umm....no, I think you'll find Ether came first and was replaced because patients would wake up and immediately vomit...1853 Chloroform comes center stage, Used on Queen Victoria. Then in the early 1900's they realized Chloroform causes your heat to go all apeshit and quit....so they went back to ether, N2O was popular as well...until they started suffocating folks with it, they then realized by adding 21% O2 solved the problem creating, what was then known as, "sweetened air"

    Lesson over..

  • what is the cloroform for?

  • @youtubsuxfv Its a useful solvent

  • @hkparker what would happen if i inhaled it?

  • @MrChannel5news you'd collapse for a bit, too much, or and unregulated amount and you'll die. Not because its poisonous, just because it tells your brain to stop sending commands to your muscles, and essentially you stop breathing.

  • @hkparker well my question is how long does it affect and take when put to a person mouth/nose?

  • @youtubsuxfv Also it's one of the first agent for surgery anesthesia in history .

  • @youtubsuxfv for his dates XD

  • The first rule is not to inhale it.

The second rule is not to inhale it...

  • @piranha031091 why what happens

  • <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

  • really dont inhale it

  • Excellent synthesis hkparker!

If you viewers want to see another synthesis of chloroform check out our channel, Real Chem!

  • @RealChemLabs you can respond to my video

  • very nice yield you got there. I would really like to see how you (maybe) make CCl4 with the Chloroform by chlorinating it under very strong light and distilling of the CCl4 from the last bit of Chloroform. Would this be possible to make?

  • @olympicfan2 I believe I mentioned in my first iodoform video, the reaction between chloroform and chlorine is very very slow or requires extreme conditions. I think it would be awesome as well but I don't think it is practical enough.

  • now how the hell was casey anthony supposed to follow all that? you lost her at hotplate. and the star-wars-mad-scientist spiral glass thingy was so visually intimidating that that it just shut her tiny little mind down before you could even begin.

so now look what your vid inspired. she made some half ass shit that killed her kid. you cant expect her to be right about how she makes this stuff. she had important things to save that brainpower for, like a sexathon w/ a new weedman l8r that nite.

  • whats the differance in bleach powder and liquad bleach? I never got the milky layers.

  • @sandyhembree Read the ingredients on the bleach power, Im sure some brands differ. but I doubt they contain hypochlorite, necessary for this reaction.

  • GREAT VIDEO!!! I love the 720.

  • @jr14103 Thank you

  • make flouroform :) by the way great videos !

  • You should probably mention the danger of phosgene and if you smell any during the reaction, should you, to stop.

In any case, great videos recently, and pretty nice that you're finally uploading in 720p!

  • @Kendrana Your right, it can be dangerous. And thanks! I've made some camera improvements.

  • I like the smell of it! I don't try to inhale it, but when I'm using it sometimes I get a fume or two up my nose. For those who don't know, it is very sweet smelling.

  • @ScienceHideout I have to admit, it does smell nice and sweet

  • @hkparker

You know chemists have the lowest life expectancy of all scientists? People wonder why...

  • @ScienceHideout

    Still it's worth it :)

  • @ScienceHideout life ain't worth living if we can't have fun while living

  • @hkparker HAHAHAHA LOL!!!

  • ok, i won't inhale it lol

some girl at my university inhaled chloroform at the lab classes, she stole the bottle and took it to the restroom, then she passed out, let the bottle break and they discovered her lying on the restroom floor she got expelled haha.

So yeah, do not inhale it.

  • @Tezcax haha wow, thats scary though!

  • Nice video . . .I'd imagine you could use dirt-cheap bleach (no fragrances) for this also because it contains sodium hypochlorite?

  • @98JMA Sodium hypochlorite bleach should work fine.

  • @98JMA yes, I've seen that done before as well. I believe ReactionFactory (link in the description) used that method.

  • Yes, bromoform would be interesting, as it is liquid and has a high density.

  • and dosnt it cause canser to?

  • great video :) getting much, much better. keep up the great work :)

  • @TheChemlife Thank you :)

  • Keep up with the videos, you are an inspiration to myself and many others.

  • @TickyTack23 Thank you, I really appreciate that :)

  • Hayden, You are going to die one day if You keep heating chloroform with a torch ;)

  • @Phacias MSDS sheets say its not flammable... hope I didn't miss something

  • @hkparker Hmm... stupid me, it's not flammable :)

  • good video, what is it used for?

  • @toothpick93 I will be using it as a solvent

  • nice vid!

you might want to check your thermometer as it looks like it got some bubbles in it.

I tried this just a few days ago, used a 1:3 molar mix and got a surprising bp of the steam, it was hovering around 56C (give or take) and the explanation of the low temperature I found was the chloroform+water azeotrope.

Also, I tried to make a 35% mix of water and calcium hypochlorite and it failed as it got too thick after a while, 15% seems to be manageable.

    keep up the good work!

  • @knglaser good information, thank you.

I was getting about 60C, a little under chloroform's BP so I'm guessing I had a little water in there. No problem as I dried it. Mine did get thick as well, I'll keep that ration in mind.

  • @hkparker about the boiling point, if you have excess acetone you get a bp at about 60 as it's a ternary azeotrope. Search for "azeotrope data" on wikipedia for a good list of bp's (:

If you do multiple batches to home in on the correct ratio, I guess the early/mid bp rising above 56C is a sign of excess acetone. I haven't decided yet, having acetone in excess makes sure you use all the hypo, but you get it in the product instead...

  • @knglaser Thanks for the important data, Ill go over that list.

A little acetone in my product is ok, if its only a little, and judging by my boiling point I think it is. I guess there isn't anything wrong with having extra hypo, something just makes me uneasy about heating calcium hypochlorite with organics...

  • ahh, this is amazing. I woke up and saw the video while eating breakfast. hm hm, pancaques with coffee and organic synthesis =)

    Thank you so much =)

    Nice video

  • @PauldChemist hah, Im glad you enjoyed my video :)

  • dont inhale it because when out in sun(uv light) releses phosgene gas witch will kill u vary quick

  • do not inhale it ;]. also i think when it decomposes it releases radioactive particles.

and yeah it can poison you leading to death =o so do not inhale =)

  • @Digadogup

most things can be radioactive. the point is that its a carcinogen.

  • wow its even in the brown glass bottle you always see

  • nice video!

  • @coolliger Thank you
