i'm all for getting women out of poverty and also all the other causes of oppression - domestic abuse, etc. but i would like to see it done in ways that don't emulate western values and western feminism. we need to find a way of getting the country out of the mire of poverty and corruption by finding our own solutions that fit in with our own cultural agendas, not by committing ourselves to a narrow focus on western feminism that may not, in the end, be relevant to bangladesh's people.

i'm interested in the 'women' focus of this project. i don't know much about it, but i think that most of these 'empowering women' projects are tools for putting western feminisms into place. bangladesh is a poor country; there are poor men as well as women.

@fstoney, I agree, both men & women are poor; the majority of the time a woman w/reach back & help her family: husband & children; but in other cultures for a man to do it is rare. And its been proven in 'Western culture' that 'empowering the woman w/o emphazing on the importance of family dynamics, destroys the family; single family in Western culture is now the norm & very acceptable but it isn't right.

Cultures use Islam/Christianity/Hinduism as a tool to suppress women, The old world countries in particular are still left behind in this IE) Bangladesh, India, China.

Cultures that are inherently Barbaric unfortunately using Islam are Pakistan and Arab's.

Cultures that are more Respectful of Human rights (not just womens) & Muslim Malaysian - Qatar, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Bahrein, Tunisia.

For Bangladesh to succeed, they need a national conscious similar to that of the Chinese where success and victory are everything. TO become the most ruthless in business beating all international competition as well as improving education to create a generation of engineers, scientists etc... to build a strong Bangladesh and eradicating corruption in govt for the betterment of Bangladesh. Everything must be done to make Bangladesh stronger.

As muslims, first of all, we have to pray to Allah for His mercy upon us and then have to work hard with the believe in heart that Allah will help us to make our lives better. It's not just only praying, and doing nothing and not even the other way around. Both must go in parallel. And only then Allah would make our efforts help us get out of all kinds of difficulties.

Religion (Islam) doesnt tell u to pray only. That tells us to work hard as well. There is a verse in quran "God doesnt help those who doesnt help themselves to get their way out". So, its not true that Bengalis just pray and nothing else. I think we have to work much harder then western ppl just to survive (as there is no unemployment benefit). Only problem is corruption and politicians. Otherwise, BD could be lot better and developed.
