there's a really good biography of nicky hopkins just published. talks a lot about this track. and this brilliant album! "And on Piano ...Nicky Hopkins: The Extraordinary Life of Rock's Greatest Session Man" [Paperback]
Thanks again, RG. I had a couple of his albums years ago and he really does work magic on that keyboard. A time when music really was worthy of making you gasp.
@sianlovescats Oh yes it's Nicky and may I say one of his greatest contributions on record Whether it was the Stones Kinks Who Quicksilver Airplane, and tyoo many to mention, the man was a keyboard genius. RIP always Sir Nicky.
This song is one of Steve Miller's best, funny too because it's a keyboard song. Hopkins did a fine job. Howevver there really is some good pickin too.
Nicky was my piano hero too. Everybody from Quicksilver and the Airplane to the Stones, The Who, Miller and Jeff Beck used his talents. Once upon a time Miller was actually relevant.
I miss Miller when he mattered. Those days are long gone...
@bendbadgersteve@finbarfay Nicky is my hero too! I just can't get enough of Nicky's piano... each new song I hear is amazing... I listen to "Following the river" on the new Exile' edition with my eyes full of tears... is like if he was alive, rocking the piano. Wherever you are, God bless you, Nicky, and thank you
An absolutely beautiful song from Steve...One of his greatest before all the commercial stuff - Listen to 'Seasons' & 'Brave New World' also...And listen to Steve's first 5 LP's!
Nicky Hopkins shines here, thanks for posting

For such a strong and exceptional melody, the lyrics sound like they were written in a five minute rush.
Oh well. Like any of us could do any better!

My earliest introduction to Steve Miller. Loved this song, especially the piano. Is it Nicky Hopkins?
