The Tchaikovsky's Sixth is the most original Symphony never created after the Beethoven's Ninth. The composer always expressed : " create something which says something, music must express something.. it cannot be a group of empty sounds". Stravinsky many year after expressed that the Tchaikovsky's music had something incredible, very deep that is was not easy to see and understand. The symphony 6 is the unique example of the true Tchaikovsky.
there's going to be a concert in London this coming April with this piece and the Rachmaninoff 2nd Piano Concerto. I'm just imagining my tears when i hear both that and the last movt of the Tchaik 6th..
This is as nice and balanced a version of this symphony I have heard. Im quite impressed I must say. The second movement was played superbly not to quick or slow but with a warmth that can be lacking in some performances. The third movement I must say almost as good as Ashkenazy with the Philharmonia. Just wonderful and refreshing. BRAVO!
The bassoon and clarinet soloists were very good. And the second theme in the first movement had all the emotional gravity and tragic beauty that (more or less) defines this heartrending symphony. And the performance of the second movement is one of the best I have heard.
The last minutes of Music Lovers, when Tchaikovsky (Richard Chamberlain) drinks a polluted water glass, is the time when we can listen to the last minutes of the fourth movement of this Symphony called Adagio Lamentoso. And in the final credits, we listen to the last bars where little by little the orchestra is finishing of playing and silence one for one. Each instrument is finishing his bars and only we can listen to Fagot and Double Bass. How Ghastly, it´s a very emotive and sad ending.
Fine performance, fine playing in all departments and excellent soundtrack. Great to see so many young players ENJOYING playing such an emotive work. Fantastic.
I have very little doubt that Myung Whun Chung is soon going to be one of history's next superconductors.. and it fills me with tremendous pride to say so in that I am also a Korean classical musician. I cannot express enough how much his interpretation of this work has just absolutely blown me away.
This is amazing. I love all the sudden transitions. The first one after the silence came out of nowhere and startled me, and the one somewhere near the end (from bold to soft) was beautiful.
Great performance and a great upload, but I respectfully disagree with your thoughts on the movement order. When the audience behaves and nobody interferes (I attended a performance where the audience gave the orchestra a standing ovation after the march...and then started leaving...) with the transition from the 3rd to 4th movement, the sudden shift from fun and triumphant to dejected desperation is really effective.
@tsubasafdf Don't worry. Be happy. You Jap who are a descendant of the war criminal of the WW II have never known wrong doing in the past history. Me either I disdain and hate you Japs. Surely I do know there are good moral conscious Japanese too but not like you moral blind ass. Of course, he knows music as a leading conductor in the classical world. Bleach out your dirty morality.
Yeah, they show respect to music, to composer, to orquestra... That's the way its supose to be. It's a shame we'll never get that in this monkeyland called Lithuania :(
So beautiful. The fullness of the emotions in this piece and the way the orchestra expresses them is gorgeous. It's the perfect thing to listen to while writing poetry.
@Astro3100 ...Yes i know as i am a malaysian chinese and unfortunately only know english, malay, chinese and a sprinkling of german, french, italian, spanish (these three, including romanian, are the so-called romance languages and although they are beautiful lingos are, unfortunately, hardly spoken here) and am also now learning some indian. Perhaps, i might learn some korean too in future as, after all, the car that i am driving is a hyundai model. Arigato.
@301250 you don't need to learn korean. i'm korean live in taiwan myself, and can speak mandarin, japanese, english, Korean and can read italian, german news papers(70-80%) , and can speak broken Fukenese, but i can say that Korean language is useless one out of Korean penisular. and i know maysia phil is very wonderful too.
@icylakepaxphile ...seems you are quite an amazing linguist as rare is the person who is able to speak so many languages, most people are monolingual or at best bi-lingual. Mastering one language, let alone two..or three, is already problematic for most. By the way the so-called Malaysian Phil orch. is a misnomer really as all but a handful of its players are foreigners. Syabas monsieur!
Thank you for posting this great performance, SuperThesus, of Tchaikovsky's valedictory symphony, with both orchestra and maestro Chung in fine form. Notwithstanding a few Occidental players in this ensemble (who no doubt are excellent) he Koreans are the best musicians in E Asia, technically and musically. So once again thank you, danke, merci, grazie, xie xie, terima kasih. sd goh (malaysia)
@301250 I wouldn't go so far as to say that Koreans are the best musicians in East Asia, some of the world's greatest authorities in music are from Japan and China.
that 4th movement :)

starting @ 40:48, watch the violinist sitting front right totally laugh to himself at the Maestro, conducting in full "Lamentoso" mode...

@quckneasy Looks like most of them are using a German bow hold, as opposed to the French style

@MonicaKn17 So was I. That last little bit of the symphony is Tchaivsky's resignation to death. It is his passing.

@tenkre8 In reality people are scared of silence. Unconsciously people tend to cough during awkward silences lol

@tenkre8 They all cough and hack over there. At least they didn't spit- that's usually the case- China and India esp.
But yes, a marvellous performance of Brilliant music, from the Genius.
