Does anyone have any insights on this film? It's more like a snapshot than a film to me; I don't see any story or message. Is it just meant to be a glimpse of something?
It is a meditation on our mortality and our inevitable death. It was inspired by the poem of the same name by William Cullen Bryant. Thanatos=death, opsis=seeing ie, seeing our own death.
BTW, I had the pleasure of meeting Ed Emshwiller when he was a guest lecturer at one of my film production classes back in college. (Way back!) He screened this film and some of his others. He was a great talent, and also an illustrator of science fiction books.
I've had come downs like this

Mr. Emshwiller was a genius. His great abstract movies will always live on. This one is intense, cinematic and powerful. I love it.
