We americans as a whole sufferd far less then everyone in the war. But the fact remains our ability to project and win world wide over land see and air was no small feat . It is no wonder that europeans are such pacisfists now..WW1 was enough and the second still keeps them in shock.

True, while the Russians provided most of the blood & military effort needed to defeat Hitler the Americans provided the enormous industrial resources and material wealth required. The US truly was the arsenal of Democracy & supplied its allies with huge quantities of weapons, aid & other material.

Also the US defeated Japan with its right arm behind its back. The major fighting effort for the US was directed in Europe, Japan was secondary.

I miss the noble US of old ;-)

@Achbiter and the US is still rebuilding after 9/11 and hasn't truly recovered over that one terrorist attack. Imagine a full scale war on its borders like Europe had. I think the foreign policy on this side of the Atlantic would change dramatically if that were ever to occur.

We Americans that know the History of the "Eastern Front" are grateful to the sacrifices of the Soviet people to defeat Nazism. We had it so easy in the USA compared to USSR. When I was a little kid in the 50's (California) people still talked of the war with the blackout drills, curfews and rationing. Compared to Moscow in late 1941 the American "Home Front" was luxurious. Thanks to our Comrades in Arms! Hitler Kaput...

@topguntopcat yes, that looks like M3 Lee but since Soviets got a lot of tanks from British and US on a land lease its very possible.

@dimgrave26 They got, but after they finally got their own tanks into mass production, the ones they got from UK&US became almost useless, Soviet tank crews and generals did not like them. They preferred T-34 anyday over M3 or M4 or even Matilda

@gsgaidan10 In years 41-42 of the war, T-34 was the perfectly balanced tank, with firepower, mobility and armor. It lost its edge only in 1943 when Germnas got their first Panthers and Tigers. But still, there was always atleast three T-34s against 1 Tiger. Plus Soviets had many Tank Destroyes that could kill easily Tigers and Panthers. But true evolution and its pinnacle was T-34-85. With its 85mm gun it could penetreta Tigers and Panthers and its turret had more armor plus a new crew member.

@gsgaidan10 Most experts agree that T-34 and its evolution T-34-85 were the best tanks of WW2 as in overall. Only because the things you said above, ofcourse the Tiger or Panther was more powerful, but they were horrible to maintain and they were very slow to manufacture compared to T-34 and even M4 sherman. Without the T-34, Europe would probably speak German language now.

@normison69 to say a tank made that much difference is laughable. your ignoring the principles of war. if the panthers were allowed to be produced en mass because of no bombing raids on germany, then the t-34 would have failed. if the american lend-lease programme hadnt given the ussr hundreds of petrol tankers then the tanks couldnt have manoeuvred as they did and would have sufferd grave losses, even zhukov acknowledges that. to say one tank did it all.....

@theironcup Nope, Panther was WAY too complex to manufacture compared to the T-34 and T-34-85. Its like comparing a hand made Swiss clock to a Chinese mass made clocks, also even trough allied terror bombings wich targeted more cities than factiories and still the Germany increased its tank production in 1943 and 1944. History is against your statement.

@theironcup Also T-34 was much more easier to maintain and to recover disabled tanks and make them viable again. 60% of T-34s that were knocked out were restored by maintenance after the battle of Kursk. Every German tank almost was left on the battlefield.
