My goodness, so much chatter about this Lani Vs. Whitney. I just found out about her from a friend. She has a fairly decent voice, she is no Whitney. She is a good entertainer, therein lies the difference, Lani will never have a grammy. but hey I say let the Filipino Community have their Diva, besides you also have Charice and perhaps the newest on Idol Thia.

Lani simply has her own way of singing this songs. She owns the song as if it was hers. This is very rare to some of singers nowadays. The always tend to copy the original which is of course very hard to achieve. Lani sings her songs with her own "Lani Misalucha" touch yet not varying from the original. Very talented singer. Very unique. Very distinctive.

Lani's a good singer, but in my opinion, she's not as good as Whitney was/is. Whitney may never reach the heights she once reached in her peak, but she has already etched her mark in history.

As for pegasus2001c, whether Whitney is over-rated or not depends on who you're asking. If you're asking yourself, then fine. If you're asking Whitney fans, then you won't hear what you want to hear. Just sayin'. You can't actually prove that Whitney is this or that objectively. That ain't happenin'.

Only time can tell whether it can be proven or not but if Whitney's vocal ability is compared against a lot of singers in the 20th century, such as Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, Minnie Riperton, Natalie Cole etc., one may question why Whitney is given such recognition. FYI, I used to be a Whitney fan until I listened to a lot more better talent and I'm not the first ex-WH fan to notice how mediocre WH's voice actually is in comparison!

One MAY. It still depends on who you're asking. If you tell me to look up Mariah and compare her to Whitney, Mariah has her advantages as well as her disadvantages. Ask Mariah to do A Quiet Place and she won't, coz she can't. At least, that's what I think. What it all comes down to is that all of these singers have their strengths, as well as their weaknesses. Aretha can't do SAMLFY like Whitney could, nor could Whitney do Respect like she could. Natalie did IHN before, and it wasn't too good.

All in all, this is all but a matter of opinion. You can argue with people for ages and ages that Mariah or whoever is better than Whitney - you won't be able to stop since not everyone will agree with you. Just like not everyone would agree that Whitney is a great talent. The point is this cannot be done objectively, and if you're basing you're point solely on what notes one can or can't hit, or what runs one can or can't do, then we're done talking. Coz singing is so much more than that, imho.

Also another thing, WH forced her voice to do things it's not supposed to do, which is one factor why her voice withered away so much when compared to say Aretha, though past her peak might be able to give some of WH's songs justice than WH today! Again time will eventually determine whether WH is truly a great or an over-rated 80s icon. But I agree opinion is also a contributing factor but not necessariy the only criteria!

It's true that Whitney did indeed do that, but Aretha also experienced a huge vocal decline due to her smoking. Mariah also made her voice do things it was not supposed to do; it is funny that these singers, who we think are so great, do not really have what we call the best technique. You can't tell me that Mariah's or Aretha's voice did not suffer decline (even when WH's may be worse).

Because if I were to be honest, I would say that Mariah did not have the best technique early on in her career - I'd even say that Whitney had better technique. If you'd say that Mariah is a better vocalist, then explain to me why her performance of IOYK/Somewhere.. is not that vocally stellar. Compare that to Whit's This Day in 92 (these performances being 7 years after each artist's debut).

In fcat, Stevie said that Mariah's testimony to her talent is that her name is mentioned up there with Whitney and Aretha. MJ. Her highst chest note is G#5, just like WH. Her highest mix note is B5. And Regine's power is great, but not appealing like WH.

Actually Regine's diction is just as clear as WH if not clearer. Bearing in mind, Regine is singing in a 2nd language, had Regine's 1st language been in English, there's no doubt Regine would easily own WH. Regine can never be appealing as WH unless she sings original songs in English outside the Philippines, preferable in USA but as far as control of voice is concerned, Regine is far more consistent live and got amazing vocal control. Regine is mostly under-rated.

Charice Pempengco is also a Filipina singer and speaks English as a second language, yet her diction is clearer than Regine. Regine can never own Whitney because WH has more depth. Whitney can sing one note and get a standing ovation. She always changes her performance; she never sings a song the same. Whitney also has amazing vocal control. She can flip from chest to head and back in a split second doing complex runs without breaking into head voice.

WH usually sings songs differently if she's struggling. So Emotional as well as Didn't We Almost Have It All are a few examples where WH's live versions never match the studio version. Regine has sung WH's songs different by adding a few runs - it's up on youtube. WH has done complex runs in her studio of Step by Step but cannot execute those same runs live. Chris Aguilera has done similar vocal acrobatics to WH in Back To Basics and can change her tone more dramatically than Regine or WH!

I have many rare Whitney files where she sings So Emotional and hits the F5 in the chorus. Whitney always surpasses Didn't We Almost Have It All (she hardly ever sang it in the late 90's; during the Bodyguard tour, it was part of her "Love Medley", so she would sing that, then Where Do Broken Hearts Go. Step by Step doesn't have complex runs. Christina Aguilera is forcing her voice to be more dramatic, but she's a spinto. Whitney is a dramatic, but she allowed her voice to mature into one.

At the time of the Bodyguard, WH voice could still be spinto (Run To You) but she kept pushing it so hard to be dramatic that up to this point in time, WH has been unable to sing late 80s ballads similar to what she did in studio.

It's natural for a non-belting, cutting-edge Bel Canto (referring to style), and not-formally-trained singer like Lani to have such singing defects. What she shows is sheer talent, untrained talent, that is. Lani should attain mastery of the crescendo and decrescendo of her voice throughout her registers before (or instead of) working on vocal control to master belting which, by the way, is very unhealthy.

there are tons of vocal coaches available out there. pure talent is not enough. one needs to cultivate and culture it. vocal control is not just for belting. crescendo and decrescendo and vocal dynamics require extensive vocal control.i have seen a few of her videos already and she sure does engage in belting songs. she needs proper control and proper way of expelling the notes so she will not sound forced and throaty. control will also help her manage her shaky vocals in her upper register.

But Lani's fans are so proud of Lani because Lani's mere talent brought her to Las Vegas, and in Vegas she is considered a diva of unmatched talent and versatility. I (and most of her fans) dare say that Lani would be better than all singers she impersonates should she undergo vocal training.

she is a very good impersonator. but she drags the song too much. she had several flat notes. her control is not as good as whitney and she sounds strained and struggling in the difficult parts. her failure to expel the notes properly add to the forced quality in her belt and her voice sounds a bit shaky. when she hits the high notes her voice becomes unbearably throaty.

I found out that Lani performed this years ago, and I have found newer versions of this sort of impersonation. She has improved over the years. She worked on expanding her vocal range and on belting to enhance her impersonations.

she's good, but doesn't have the layering in her voice that Whitney did in her prime. Likewise, her phrasing isn't as good, and when going for power her vibratto interferes with the melody, and isn't as easy as it was for Whitney

It's great that Lani can imitate Whitney's voice. Whitney Houston's one of my favorite singer. I like her voice. It's different from other Filipino singer's voice.

lani can't sing through the fire in whichever decent way she can think of. i agree though, medyo maraming flat at bukaka yung rendition nya at madumi. lani can't sing run to you, as powerfully and cleanly as sheryn. wait, lani can't sing run to you at all. and her whitney covers are all in lowered keys. lowered keys, yet could not sustain the notes and still has flats and as they say, "bukaka at madumi at medyo gumigewang".
