seriously this plane has something that pulls me towards it, something that kinda makes me bretahless whenever i think abt it. its simply amazing!! T7 i love u.
Techinally it does. What else would it stand for? Singapore idiot airlines? Obviously it stands for Singapore international airlines but we just call it Singaprore airlines!
How are you going to tell me information about SIA when i am an SIA aficionado and know basically everything about SIA. Back in the days when SIA and MAS split, people considered SIA to be Singapore International Airlines because it took basically all of MSA international routes and basically left the domestic routes for MH. As times changed SIA just became Singapore Airlines, however technically SIA stands for Singapore International Airlines.
The 777 is one plane that made me realise why we admire such machines, just like we admire and create the greatest sports cars, buildings..etc... They put across beauty, style, incredible power...all used for the best purpose...to bring people together. Hmm come to think of it, I think a philosopher once said that is the reason why human beings will always create something greater than themselves...cos is represents whats inside us waiting to be expressed. :) Peace to all of you x
smoke comes when ignition applied for the first time during startup phase. before that a motor was reving up the highpressure compressor(whining noise) and then when correct rpm is reached fuel and ignition is applied together(white smoke and loud hum), eventually hum disapears as combusion chamber manged to hold the flame (warmedup), and sparkplugs stopped igniting. thereafter flame will stay in the chamber as long as the fuel is sprayed.
How does the whole combustion chamber ring ignite since there is only 2 igniter plugs. Also, what is the white smoke from is it unburned fuel? And why does the engine hum when the combuster is trying to hold the flame.
There is one igniter per engine. In modern gas turbines the combustion chamber is designed radially to make it as a single unit with many fuel injectors. But in some turbo props and shaft engines there are individual combusion chambers.
White smoke is burning fuel with rich mixture (and some water vapour).
The hum is of the frequency of ignition, the sparking frequency. When spark occures the whole ring fires with loud pop and dies cos temp not enough and spark again and pop, goes on n on
Is the combuster flame operate off of the heat generated from the compression of the air, or does it operate the same way a burner does in a grill or stove?
compression heat generation it self cannot ignite fuel, but it helps There must be a delicate balance between air speed though the combustin chamber, fuel spray velocity and air density to combustn to happen at the right place just before the turbines(which is a load). The chamber shape is designed in a way to fullfil all these, it is complex based on fluid dyn, aero dynmic math..(bear in mind e gas expnsion speed too).If the input air speed/volume is less aginst the load, engin backfire may occure
It seems That fuel is applied before ignitiion since of the unburnt fuel out the back of the engine. But basicly what you are saying is that the fuel spray along with ignition (Like a burner on a stove) is what burns the fuel. And the compressor is there to allow the engine to operate more efficienty due to expansion and keep the engine lit up at high altitudes, right?
Technically the smoke is due to burning of rich fuel mixture(with less air, due to slower compressur speed) and water vapur cools down quickly(due to low temp expansion) and condenses. There may be a tiny lag between start of fuel spray and ignition (controlled by EM computers), longer the lag louder the pop will be. as u said same principle as stove. yep, compressor helps to attain high volumetric efficiency(like turbo charger in cars)by pressurising and accelerating air molecules for bigbang
What a cool video. Hey I searched something on FADEC Controls and it said something in 2006 about bad software systems in the FADEC 3 which controls the GE90. they say it has problems with the software. Did they fix this already and are there any current problems with the B777 300 ER. A reply would be appretiated.
The start up sound from 1:36 to about 1:54 booms very loudly in the cabin - quite startling really, like a huge coffee maker gone bad - and twice at it as the engines are started one afer another. Otherwise its a very quiet engine on take off and cruise - despite its size and power.
