any band able to tune into playing on psychedelix can be called "ahead of their time", but in that "zone" there IS no time, repetative trance has been with us since we learned we had voices and could bang two rocks together... if anything these guys were part of the doorway into re-opening that trance dance vine... and like the guys above i am actually SHOCKED i have never heard of them before either... brilliant, simple honest psychedelia
silver apples + tangerine dream = radiohead...try out "hear come the warm jets". by eno...david bowie "low"..and joy division...all you fans of "post this" and "post that" .
I's never heard of them, until about 1999? but I am sure glad I finally did, incredible, so far out it staggers belief, but still with strong melodies!
@Countrychiddler I was about 20 and got my first taste of synths with Apples. Mesmerizing throbbing electronic rythyms. Hendrix was ripping notes outa the sky and doing incredible acrobatic shit with his strat.
You know...if you told me some techno producer like Joey Beltram or Dave Clarke had produced this...I'd have totally believed you!!! Just amazing production and all totally analogue and real time performed too...no sequencers or electronic filters. Just breath taking really, :o)
I knew when I bought my waterbed in the early '70s that the salesman's name (Danny Taylor) was the same as SA's drummer but I had never seen a picture of him and didn't mention it. Then I got the "Contact" lp and I said (to myself) "That's the guy that sold me my waterbed!".
there was a time when record companies put out experimental music that kicked ass. now it all sucks because of supposedly hip ceo's that are know-nothing yuppies.
can't get enough of Oscillations! I especially like that oscillating wave-sound that kicks in around 01:58. Also like the non-boring drum beat. awesome.
@clumpft I think Suicide and Silver Apples are equals- Suicide had more emotional depth than Silver Apples even if they weren't as innovative musically. This is easy listening compared to Rocket USA or Frankie Teardrop.
I just heard Silver Apples for the first time today, thanks to Spotify mainly. Utterly fantastic, all those old oscillators and stuff. Totally hypnotic, ancient futurism, planet tribalism
I am surprised I have never heard of Silver Apples. I just checked out a couple of their songs and can see that they were ahead of their time. I can see how they influenced a lot of music.
I suppose his voice is similar to Jim Morrison, but the rest is 100% original for its time. I can't believe this band is so little known. So timeless.
"We Carry On," off Portishead's (excellent) 'Third' record sounds like a direct homage to this classic group--with a touch of Joy Division thrown in for good measure.
thanks god there is a legal drug ! in shape of an apple

Yes, it's a tribute which was apparently approved by Silver Apples, since they played a cover of "We Carry On" live.

@dvanbeever Check out the United States Of America as well, if you dig that 60's electronic Portishead sound.

Apples gave birth to Yellow Magic Orchestra and T. Dream. They opened a show for Hendrix that I went to in '69.
