I find that with all the Whats My Line Mystery Guest episodes on the 1970s series, the time allottment was ridiculous, and the panel had basically no chance of ever guessing the Mystery Guest. It never was as good as the original series of the 1950s and 1960s
i have sympathy for joan..so i am on TEAM JOAN. i do not hate olivia though...i think that their mother played each against eachother and chose a fav. it's a shame, parents should never pick favs. also, i think the riff stems from joan accusing her father of sexual advances adn olivia did not believe her. in thier career they each tried to best the other. both a wonderful actresses. imagine...both in their 90's today and have not spoken in over 30 years. i love both and wish they would forgive.
Amen, gymnastix. It was like a very sophisticated, urbane parlor game. The people on the panel were amazing and John Daly, well, he just had it all under control.
Of course this episode isn't one of the really "old 'What's My Line?'" shows.
The original version, hosted by John Daly from 1950-67, was (along with the Jack Benny & Ed Sullivan programs) a Sunday night tradition on CBS-TV (and for awhile also on radio) spanning two decades, with a panel of sophisticated & witty New Yorkers in formal attire, moderated by a distinguished & urbane news journalist.
The original show allowed viewers to look in on (and play along from home) something akin to a very cosmopolitan, elegant parlor game taking place at a penthouse on New York's Upper West Side.
The episode segment in the video here is from the syndicated run of "What's My Line?," the original's poorer, informal relative.
But with Arlene Francis (and occasionally Bennett Cerf, before his 1973 death) still on hand to lend the proceedings a touch of class, and the capable, if less authoritative, moderation by hosts Wally Brunner & Larry Blyden, still an amusing and engaging evening's entertainment.
I'd certainly take this version of the program over all the syndicated judge & "reality" shows with which television is inundated today; even over the syndicated "Family Feud" and "Deal Or No Deal," which are lowest common denominator game fare.
Joan and Olivia are both adorable! They're both my favorite. Lucky Ladies!

An absurdly short amount of time allotted for her appearance.

Gymnastix: Bennett Cerf died in 1971; not in 1973.

Soupy's nervous laughter is hysterical. She completely trumped Arlene. This is a really great episode of WML.

Love this one. Joan did a good male voice. She sure had Arlene fooled.

Love Joan and she was so funny on this one. That voice could have fooled even the most astute.
