I saw them perform that year. Stipe was physically gorgeous in the mid-80s, and his voice live was beautiful, too. Some of their lyrics during this period used to make me cry.

Absoutely bloody amazing. "Fables of the Reconstruction" is very probably the strongest example of album song-writing in the past 40 years.

true, but I just thought it was kinda funny. After all, I have to admit, when I started listening to REM in the 80s I had every one of their albums on vinyl -> Of course the songs were great but very often i'd be saying to myself, "just WHAT the hell are they saying?" lol. Maybe that's part of their brilliance is to keep u guessing and just what is the underlying obscure meaning of certain song lyrics ..?

REM is one of the best bands ever. Brilliant artistry, creativity & musicianship!
