  • The Competition is not open to residents of Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, Myanmar/Burma, Syria, Zimbabwe and any other U.S. sanctioned country.

    Fukking USA

  • He looks very amused to be conducting to a camera.

  • he enjos conducting somehting he wrote..., its a composer thing... i do it too

  • the video has few glitch that composer acts few sec late than the music if you know what i mean. they should remake this video

  • yeah I noticed that too... the music is out of sync with the conductor...

  • Comment puis je avoir partitiont de violon merci et bonne anneé

  • is there a place where i can actually hear this? Im thinking of playing trumpet 2... is there a certain age you have to be? Im 14 years old. My highest note is a high high D (off the staff)

  • you can go to their userpage and see all the information. with your age its ok i think bc the rule said 14 years or older.

  • sweet im turning 15 in april btw hope i can do this! btw what are you playing?

  • I play trumpet and I haven't practiced my trumpet for so long i can't remember some keys.... (age 19)

  • with really loose chops.

This is also a good technique to start and finish with. When I was in my prime I was paid $2500 for just one days performance. Because I played with 15 different bands by ear and everyone that stayed the whole day was like aren't your lips saw, is there iron in there?

After I finished playing for the day I still wanted more and then went home and played until my I bruised. This method may hurt at the beginning, but over time it pays back so much more

  • You are encouraging a practice techicque which might work for some, but will destroy the chops of others. Let's be a little more responsible with the pedagogy.

Bruising is usually bad. Avoid it.

Yes, chops and speed may win you the gig, but accuracy and dependability will keep you the gig. Focus on those.

  • Can I ask who you are then? You mentioned A grade nats. Over the past few years...then I'm sure you played with xlcr...?

To me this seems like a great opportunity for young players. Regardless of the piece the opportunity to go to the states would be a bunch of fun and an opportunity to expand your playing. So why aren't you auditioning? I might be, to be honest.

  • Since you requested names, I studied with Charles Greenlee, Tony Lada and Phil Wilson, and have played with Slide Hampton, Steve Turre and Delph Marsalis. (Delph was third, I was lead, if that makes a difference to you; to me, it was logical at the time, he's a better jazzer but I was a better lead player.) All these cats will agree with me on this: Flash is shit. Work on being a dependable, accurate and consistent player. Let the rest come.

  • I didn't request anything, I wasn't even talking to you.

  • where can i find the score for the other pieces that you have to play apart tan duns symphony? please help!!

  • On his YouTube channel.

  • no the score isnt there.. just the name of the pieces.. :S help please someone!

  • Click "prepare", then under the "select instrument" dropdown menu, there should be a "Full Orchestra" option somewhere at the bottom.

  • click prepare, then select trombone, then click video 2, where can i find sheet music of that pieces..?

  • now compose my own music, sell it and earn a good living from it, all at the age of 20. The music I compose is much better than this garbage and different to all contemporary symphony music you would expect to hear. In a few years you'll probably be playing my music going, WOW this is different, fun, hard, high, fast and makes me feel good all at the same time. So I say to you, just because you have graduated berklee it doesn't mean you are accomplished in the field of music......

  • I hope this is some sort of internet alter-ego you put on, because I've never encountered anyone so pompous and pretentious.

  • He speaketh the truth.

  • djzsmk

I'm trying to say a good player can sight read and even then still throw a few notes in to make the piece sound better. People that need to read music heaps are people that don't truly understand music. This piece was also (I believe) designed in thought of people like yourself, still at highschool and for a younger audience. I say garbage an I may make a future jazz piece, like this and you'll see how much groovier, funkier and louie louie it feels. Peace homie.

  • Hey, learn to have some humility.

  • People who can read music heaps are people equipped to recreate the works of the masters, which is reverant and respectable.

I look forward to your contribution to this project.

  • g2k25d94: basiclly no

kingdogol:im sorry that u blew a blood vessel but this music isnt rubbish. just because its a little had doesnt mean u have to write it off as rubbish, and playing jazz dosent make u an amazing trumpet player. its being able to play a diverse amount of music

  • Yeah man I know, and I can play everything from Bach to blues. This music is rubbish and if anyone watching the trumpet part, either of them, has trouble following them the FIRST TIME THROUGH, then you aren't very good at playing music. This is an extremely asian themed piece and I played higher stuff when I was in A-Grade nationals in Australia, and that was for this music, not jazz, also was trumpet 1 and therefore I clearly think you have no idea what you're talking about.

  • is this in sync?

  • im playing the trumpet part and its difficult for me. hey im only in high school, but im going for it with all of my talent

  • Yeah man, I'm 20 now and stopped playing when I was 18 because I reached super super super f and blew a blood vessel in my head, therefore I'm already balding, though I still pick it up and play higher than anyone I know occassionally. This piece of music is rubbish and very asian~ish. If you want to make it as a trumpet player type search for arturo sandaval vs dizzy gillepie and I got higher than arturo got in that, therefore learn jazz and stop playing with a conductor, best advice for a muso

  • "Learn jazz" - dude, I jove jazz, graduated Berklee and play regularly, but shit. it isn't about that. You're a kid half my age. Go get some real experience and hindsight, pay your dues, and then come back and lay your "this sucks and no real musician likes it" crap on us. We'll still think you're an asshole, but maybe then you'll be an asshole worth working with. As of now you're a jerk kid with a chip on his shoulder and nothing on the table to prove me wrong.

  • qermaq as youtube still have these comments not working properly, those comments were for a highschool kid on another page. I say to you though that music will not advance as you 'symphos' just keep reguritating the same old stuff. People need to play higher faster and louder these days to enjoy it and have more fun. As far as experience i've playeed all cornet positions in several brass and symphony bands, various trombone positions as well as others. I payed my dues already and therefore

  • Ok, you got me. I do not know what a "sympho" is. I have a guess, but would rather stick to vocabulary we can agree upon.

But higher/faster is NOT the answer, and the sooner you learn it the better off you are.

Get some real chops and come back.

  • Sympho is the name given to weak chopped sympho-ny players. I beleive you need good chops to play higher and faster, therefore, for me and other good players it is the answer.

I found a way t get good chops was push yourself harder each day, so play till you bruise each day, or your chops hurt, soon you'll be able to play, or if you play bass it should be lower and faster, you should also be able to get your instrument even lower than standard people can by blowing 'raspberries' into it with

  • Well, let me share this.

Range is shit. Speed is shit.

Consistency and accuracy and dependability, that be the shit.

That's what you want to focus on over the long haul. Do that, speed and range will follow. Don't do that, you're a cocky freak with decent chops but no sense of time/bad intonation/misses the articulations kind of loser.

Really, this is with love from an experienced cat. Don't worry about how high r how fart. Accuracy first.

  • Well said!

  • I totally agree with you... consistency and accuracy, tone quality, clarity and technique go first hands down...

chops develop over time... and like any muscle, or tissue in your body, you would not want to overwork it to the bruising point...

rather than trying to squeak your way up, it would be great all the notes in your range have good tone right?

higher notes all come in due time...

  • Quick question; Is the sound in sync with the video? For example, check out 00:39 where the woodwinds come in on what appears to be the eighth note after his huge downbeat.

If the audio and visual are not in sync, is it okay if I sync them myself?

I'll practice to what's posted already if it's correct, although it is a little strange.

  • No it's not, it's also a terrible piece of music for the first time something like this is being done. I hope they do it again with a more renowned conductor and better music.

  • More renowned conductor than Tilson-Thomas (who will actually be the conductor)? And Tan Dun isn't some backwater unknown, saw the BSO do some of his stuff a few years back, he's a very good composer. Is this his best? No. But it's definitely very good. I question your experience in the realm of symphonic music, I guess.

  • You say its not his best and question my symphonic experience in practically the same sentence? Ar eyou bipolar or just drink too much fluoride filled water?

  • Hey, anybody know where to find sheet music for the recommended pieces for trumpet? I can't find any of them.

  • at the bottom of the youtube page click on the music icon and then it'll be easy enopugh to see from there.

  • I've been in music for over half of my life and I'm pretty determined to give this my best performance to represent all my work over the years in music.

  • Man! This piece is KILLER! Trying to play along with it is nuts! This is deffinately worth trying out for.

  • Great concept...shocking piece!

  • Hello, i am a sophomore in highschool. Im trying out for 2nd part trumpet. The piece is very fun. Im hoping to get a camera to record me playing so I can post it on youtube.

  • i'm 99.9% sure that it's going to be ALL OVER youtube.

  • whats up with his conducting style when he gets to the 3/8... To me it looks weird just flicking his wrist.

  • he has a very unique and expressive style of conducting. I agree it hard at times to read.

  • FAKE

  • WHAT?! what's fake about it?

  • this is gunna be awsome i soo wanna try out! *plays trumpet*

  • you and me both :D the music is pretty simple

  • yaaa

  • this is gonna be plain and pure fun

i already tried out the piece. pretty fun

  • I would record myself for this purpose, but I don't support uncreative music (e.g. same four chords over and over in a I, iv, IV, V pattern).

  • This piece of music changes and builds.

  • This piece of music is garbage, I write better music than this....and can conduct much better.

  • Agreed.

  • Yes, it does, but the chords don't. Can you find one point in the music where there is a chord other than I, IV, V, or vi?

  • I don't think I'm gonna record myself playing this (cause it's nearly impossible for me)

but I am now determined to play this

  • I'm Only A High School Level Student Wishing To Audition. I Have Little Chance Or Hope Of Getting Selected, But It Would Still Be Good To Try Out And Get Some Constructive Criticism On My Audition. But For Some Reason As Soon As Measure 28 Starts, I Get Completely Off From What The Director Is Directing. I Play Bass Trombone And Will Hopefully Have Videos Ready And Up Soon, But Could Anyone Give Me Any Advice How To Understand How The Director Is Directing At 28? Any And All Help Is Appreciated!

  • He is conducting the eighth note.

  • yea some of the measure get off the recording. but not all lot just like 2 or 3. And sometimes you can't really hear the lower trumpets. Not when its totally important, but its nice. Also the hard part is 69-73 for me at least. I also get lost with the counting because of the weird time signatures. Oh well must get better!

  • It is hard to coordinate the ending, that is where the track gets really off, so when i try to do the recording I always mess up there cause i cant tell where the horn riffs start and where the down beat is. Oh well, I shall perservere I guess, i have two recording I could possibly put up, but I want to do better, the tuba part is fun!

  • Could someone help me with the turn on the downbeat of 73? (At least I think it's a turn) How would I play it? Thanks :)

  • man i have almost the entire peice down. not great, but to where i can at least play all of it.

only parts i have any real trouble on are measures 69 thru 72 (not hard, just fast) and measures 93 thru 98 (the syncopated stuff is hard for me.)

  • I know what you mean for 69-72... Once you get the fingering pattern down although it's easy to incorporate the actual playing. Awesome part too ;P

  • Yeah measure 51 it's almost like the sheet music is different from the recording.

  • I understand this is the practice piece, but there are even issues beginning at measure 4 and the music.. it can be played by fudging the part to sound like the music, but if I play the music as written, it's not the same as the audio.

  • yeah, theres no fermata at measure 4, on here he holds beat 3 out like there is.

  • There are some serious issues going on with the music in Measure 51.. at least for Trumpet Part.

  • This would be my part, I play bari sax, but I have to transpose tuba. :B
