he sold the farm because he wanted to quit and that most of his hired men didn't care about anything. they found a 4 wheel drive tractor in a grain storage building buried in grain.
the government made him sell out because him and his wife lied big time on the crop insureance. i think they filed false claims on over 36,000 acres. if he didnt sell out than the gorverment was going to seize the farm
i just got home from the Robert Hamilton farm sale in iowa falls. it wasnt anywhere near as big as this one but they had some very nice equipment. I was gonna tape it but was in a hurry and had to get going so i forgot the camera
yeah did Salters buy a Cat tractor from them and did Johnson Harvest Crew buy one of the Peterbult service trucks or both of them. they look like what Johnsons have as service trucks now.
i dont think salters bought one because i think both of there cats are MT755s whereas the ones at the sale are MT765s. I never noticed how the service trucks look like the ones Johnson Harvesting owns
Big farmer or not, just another farmer tryin to make a livin with odds against them such as weather markets etc. farming and ranching has always been a challenge in some parts of the country, just due to geograhic location and such. farmers and ranchers have always been an easy target for any wrong doing. My hat off to this guy for having an operation like this at least he tried .With trillions being talked about today sure makes one wonder how many ppl are going to cash in HONESTLY !!
They had 10 John Deere 9610 Combines that they bought new. From what I remember they bought the first 8 then they bought 2 more a year or two later. It was more than sufficient for their operation though in my opinion.
I was part of the auction crew that helped to clean up and sell all of the equipment. We were given a drive through all of the property and it was most definitely impressive. I know a lot of people may not like the guy but it was an impressive set up in my opinion.
sorry 36,000 acres and if you have google earth, the fields were all summer fallow the year the picture was taken so their fields are darker color than the farmed land around it. the farm actually goes north west but it is very easy to tell the field since it is much darker. being from new york i couldn't of imagined the true scale until i actually was there and it still is amazing to me. I would of loved to see that farm in action in its hay days. I can only imagine what it was like.
lol I was there for alot of its hay day and it was one of the most amazing things i've seen to this day. before all the challengers it was all john deeres 4x4 and mind boggling when harvest started as you have learned firsthand. glad you got to experience that craZy your from ny but on a harvest crew good for you.
I actually harvested that farm this 2008 harvest year. the farm is rented out and i believe is owned by investors. The farm in 36,00 acres total but they only got about 20,000 acres planted this year to all spring wheat. There 1.3 million bushel storage in bins on the farm. it was the most amazing thing i have ever done and will charish the memories forever. I harvested it working for johnson harvesting.
i was trying to find this place on google earth and now you cant even find the road that it was on. its like the whole thing disapeared, if anyone finds it on a map PLEASE TELL ME or if you now anything about it
jeez that would be nice havin that guy as your step dad! Do you know who is farming it now? I have been trying to find it on satilite maps but i cant even find the road it is supposedto be on.
yere but at some farm sales the local delers throw kit in they wont to get rid off and give some of the profit to the farm selling it and also extend the invatation to other local farmers
I was at a Diamond Ring Ranch sale in the early 1980's. How many tmes are they going to sell this place? Are they going for the guiness world record for this big ass farm!
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) A Midland couple can avoid criminal charges for allegedly lying to the federal government if they comply with a federal program called pretrial diversion.
Prosecutors say 67-year-old Wilbert Ohlmann and 63-year-old Judith Ohlmann are accused of making false statements to the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation and Farm Service Agency regarding preventive planting claims on more than 31,000 acres of spring wheat.
i was at this sale bought #14 cat! 448hrs average engine load was 20% only pulled a grain cart and idled most of its life! The shed is 200 by 600! +-35,626 acres the land auction was actually not too long ago, 1-24-08, use to run all deere 4x4s.
SIOUX FALLS (AP) -- Grand jurors have indicted three men from McCook County on charges they defrauded the federal farm program of more than $381,000 in 2003 and 2004.
Brian Randall and James Randall of Canistota and Lynn Schultz of Emery are charged with conspiracy, false statements, wire fraud and money laundering.
Prosecutors say the three men claimed to run separate farming operations, but Brian Randall owned them all
I was at this sale and the thing that struck me most of all was that they were way over powered. 15 Cat Challengers for 34,000 acres works out to only 2267 acres per tractor.
The trailer at the end had a grain leg fall on it. The bent JD head looked like a grain cart ran over it. The combine had a fire. It takes a lot of hired help to run that much machinery. Some are smarter than others.
This was definitely one of the largest, if not the largest, farm in western SD. Most of the land was range before being purchased by the owner who has sold out. In the beginning, 20-some 4X4 tractors were shipped in by railroad. I am not sure exactly how large the place is, but I think that it is 20-30,000 acres. I wish that I would have set aside the time to see the auction!
I used to live on this place when we were married to their son but its not the largest in western south dakota. It's not as big as Haskins even but it is huge
It's been awhile since I've been there but I think its around 35,000 dont quote me on that but it's changed hands a few times so the number moves around but i think that's fairly close
Very sad !

@GWL1961 Very true! You have to do what you can with what you have and make it work. It doesn't matter whether your milking cows or growing wheat.

what do you mean try to get away with that? just a big farmer tryin to make a livin, look at whats going on now with banks, government, wallstreet
