@maxmooney I happen to agree with this. Not only did boys perform it when it was composed but I sang it as a boy with The Columbus Boychoir..(.now The American Boychoir). The vibrato does not do it justice at all and there shouldn't be any.
@noklarok Cascadia Academy of Music in Portland? You think these people are right wing people who agree with the war? Oh I see you are just trolling.. *yawn*
no, i am not "trolling",, nor did i suggest these musicians were right wing, but they are hijacking a very emotive piece for a political end.
i am suggesting there is a difference between a mother losing her young child to (e.g) an illness and a mother who encouraged her son to join the army and proudly boasted of her son defending america only to have him returned in a casket.
although deaths of soldiers are sad, they are avoidable... especially since there was no reason to invade iraq,
Sorry but there is nothing in this music against Protestant doctrine. As for "Protestant" music being played in Catholic settings.... what difference does it make? A silly comment...
Well...Somehow it is true that we may have heard "different" performances. But for a reason I can´t explain from a musical point of vew...This 1 Is very touching..TY
i listen it yesterday night [13/4/09] Holy Monday for the East Greeck Orthodox Church, from chamber's music national orchestra of greece was so nice !!!!

very beautiful.
But one of the singers over shot a little in the first movement. And thank god everyone came together in the second movement. The violins were late coming in and then the conductor tried to wait for them but thew off the cellos in the process lol
the manage of tempo is one of the most elocuent features in a performer, i think that is the proper tempo, in my very personal opinion, very personal.... the proper tempo is the fastest possible, without damaging the spirit of the music, very personal, if you think otherwise, please don't nag at me ok, i don't care hehehe
Before 1800 Largo was a caracter indication wich meant "broad". It got nothing to do with tempo. Since Beethoven Largo, Allegro, Andante and so fort, are tempo indications. A famous quote by Beethoven he put above a composition was: Allegro non troppo Largo quasi Andante molto Vivace.
the accent is at times slightly american, yes - but one cannot have everything, and a lot has been written over which pronounciation of latin is correct.
I found the piece hauntingly slow, and moving. Dead people are dead people - irrespective of what one thinks of the war they died in - and they and their families deserve respect.
Unfortunatly the american soldiers died for the profits of the capitalists... They were send send from home to kill their iraqi brethern. The Iraqi bosses and the american bosses were in conflict. And who were sactifised? The iraqi and american workers. What did those workers have to win in this war? Nothing. they could only lose.
Why just not put saddam and bush in a gladitorial battle without sacrificing the blood of the innocent?!
We performed this at school when I was studying for my A level in music in Southampton, England. I do not feel as though it was performed too slow, I think that you all did a sterling job! You all executed the perfomance well will pleasant phrasings. Very well done!!
Did you know that this Stabat Mater wasn't written at all by Pergolesi, he stole it completly from Fransesco Provenzale who died 6 years before Pergolesi was born. On youtube you can find more about this ( only in Dutch )
Fill in "Stabat plagiaat " and you will see the whole story.
Plagerism was a way of flattering musical colleagues at that period. The other composer did not think of it as stealing.
Handel's magnificent oratorio Israel in Egypt would never have been written if he had not been able to borrow much of the music from Stradella, who was...flattered by this attention.
Pergolesi is better than Mozart

any mother that let her son go to war in Iraq should accept that that was a pretty obvious outcome.
the legality of the war in Iraq is now under review in the UK.
everyone knows that tony and george wanted to go to Iraq.
9/11 was the real clincher.
fuck the iraq war.
fuck 9/11.
look how our civil rights have changed.
it's all bullshit.
war in afghanistan is making my streets safer??
complete bullshit.

This is not conducting, this is beating time!
I don't have the impression that the singers are practising abdominal breathing and the cionductor doen't inspire this).
Latin words have stressed syllables that do not necessarily coincide with high notes!
