@dukedome the main theme is based on london street cries, hence the name the london symphony. People would sing songs on the streets of london to advertise what they were selling. Hayden like the tunes, so he put them in his 104th symphony
@bindercobt word up! and this theme is taken from a Croatian song, Oj, Jelena, Jelena, jabuka zelena. Turns out Handel, Haydn and the whole bunch are what we would consider in modern times to be "samplers" of sorts.
2/2 @conradin1000 Maybe Haydn thought of it like that, or just saw it as a typical folk song theme, since folk songs, wherever they came from, were seen in the same light at the time. And it's his "London" symphony, so... I can't help it, I think of Scotland!
1/2 @conradin1000 I always thought Haydn was "inspired" by Scottish folk songs when he wrote that movement, since he wrote a lot of arrangements of Scottish songs in his old days. Anyway, that's how I interpret it, but it's just a personal interpretation. Some say it's Croatian, but I hear the theme as being kinda Scottish.
@Graoutine jelena zelena moja ljubava..hayden stole it from a croatian folk song. because his neighbors were croatian - not scots.... jelena zelena... by the way some scots have the I haplogroup so that makes us cousins.
nice piece!!!!!...nice playing!!! and nice conducting!!!... but it seems some instruments were slightly out of tune...... but aside that its probly the best video of diz symphony
You have to understand that Mozart and Beethoven were greatly influenced by Haydn. Haydn IS famous! He was the most famous composer of his time. He not only created the quartet but also fine tuned and gave meaning to the symphony! He is a genius and my favorite composer. Nobody plays like Haydn and Mozart tried to imitate him so much. Beethoven took Haydn's piano sonatas and used them to manipulate his tunes. Moonlight sonata from Beethoven is based off of one of Haydn's own sonatas.
Well ofcourse Mozart and Beethoven was greatly influnced by Haydn. Haydn was a friend of Mozart and the teacher of Beethoven. He IS " The Father of Symphony" and " The Father of String Quartet " . Truly a magnificent man.
to the video - Amazing . It was wonderful. The dynamics IMO are outstanding . The whole group knows this song.

I was never sold on the idea that this movement was based on the street cries of London. It sounds more like a Croatian dance to me.

Thank you for sharing this brilliant performance of one of my favourite symphonies from Haydn.

Oh and by the way, Minkowski does it better. I heard his interpretation in Lyon last may and it was absolutely perfect!

Great Sinfonia indeed I like it and it's near to Mozart style and also close to new begining work of Beethoven new way in he's Sinfonia style.

"haydn create the string quartet"...and mozart could compose his modern and fantastic quartets for this reality.
haydnsalieri8 3 years ago
the problem is that mozart and beethoven are more famous...and haydn was a genius like mozart and beethoven...¿why haydn is not famous?....
haydnsalieri8 3 years ago
Haydn is famous for creating and making string quartets popular...
but mozart is just soooo... awesome
I mean if you study some of his later pieces, you can tell that he was way beyond his years. Like the dissonance quartet (19)
but ur right, haydn is a musical genius. Some people just prefer Mozart over Haydn. Like me.
