I wonder how much Yule/Christmas/(in all it's forms)..owes to the cold European winters.

The festivities around mid-winter seems to me possibly serving as a coping device for European winters.With something to look forward to winter wasn't so bad after all...in fact it has a charm that isn't found in warmer climates.

I view the seasonal festivities(call it Yule or Christmas whatever,it has European roots) as part of my ethnic heritage.

@spentonmediocrity Perhaps it has more to do with terrain then climate alone. I have thought a great about the Psyche of the Northern Pagans v. the Desert Judeo Christians. My own conclusion is: Immortality of the Spirit and Rebirth appear to be miraculous events to a Desert People, to Northern People they are the Natural order. In the Spring a leaf will appear on the same spot where a previous one withered and fell.

This is Welsh, from the title, and puts me in mind of fiddle music from the Civil War era. Would fit seamlessly with the Ken Burns documentary "The Civil War".

Yuletide was the Norse/Viking Celebration of the Winter Solstice and Saturnalia was the Roman winter Solstice. The Solstice in winter is perhaps the most celebrated event in the world.

The Celtic people didn't celebrate the winter solstice until the 5th century, earlier our winter Celebration was and still is Samhian and in my country (Scotland) we celebrate our own new year called Hogmanay.

thank you for the comment ackangi. the solstice are a vary old advent. thousands of years old. you could say it writen in stone. which our brythonic ancestors built as seasonal calendar. Cymraeg language is far older that what people think and spoken as far as Yr Hen Ogledd old north or Rheged and some say mayby futher.

@jimsim3 Thank you for your wonderful reply and yes, my Scottish and Irish ancestors built there own calendars - just take a look at Ireland's Megalith Knowth for example, which is far better at tracking the solstice then our modern Calendar! 

Gaelic is indeed an ancient and well spoken language too, as well as Welsh and the other Celtic Languages.

And New Morning in Scotland was all thanks to the Viking settlers of Orkney

Winter Solstice is. "midwinter" when its the longest night of the year. After which night start to get shorter. Midwinter marks a turning point.

Its a Celtic and pagan festival of a nature celebration. We have eight of them.
