Such a killer performance!!Probably my favorite year for zeppelin, plant still had that loud blues voice and the rest of zep are so great!!FInally got me this bootleg of the whole show at the fillmore west in san fran, this is a definite must for any zeppelin fans!Great great performance this whole show. They need to come out with this bootleg digital remastered on cd with a book pages describing this show and put it in stores for people to be able listen to this wonderful stuff like it deserves!
ok seriously, can SOMEBODY tell me where I can find this song in its entirety in mp3 format!? I've been looking for it for the past year or so now and I know it's out there somewhere because I've heard it on 107.7 the bone and it was some top notch studio quality.
Anyone want to trade Zep Bootlegs let me know. I am still burning to CD. Sorry I am old school been trading for nearly 21 years and have a huge collection of all sorts of stuff. Only like 6 Zep shows. would love more. I have stuff like: Kiss Ozzy, Maiden, Sabbath, Metallica, Megadeth, slayer Manowar and tonds more. Hit me up!
Greatest Rock n Roll band of all-time....PERIOD...End of story...This interpretation of the Mimms classic is so raw and primal....I had goose bumps listening to it... Thank God for the mighty Zep....and thanks to whoever is preserving these priceless slabs of music......They will be listened to and copied forever and ever...... RIP John Henry Bonham...
There isn't another band that comes close to this degree of intensity and variety. The Rolling Stones seem absolutely tame by comparison. The thing about them is -- I feel that they really peaked here! I mean I've been a Led Zeppelin fan since 1976 but this is like finding this hidden treasure that reveals they were even better than I thought they were -- and just as they were getting started!!!!
HAIL to the burnin´ Zeppelin! HAIL to Jimmy´s fuzz box on that record! May the spirit of ´69 survive the times! I truly regret I didn´t live back in the day.
lol everybody requesting plant songs... and he saying ok we will do it 0:21.... wow... when zeppelin was just starting as a little band.... and look now at today... lucky the ones who had the pleasure to see their first concerts, in which you could say hi to them, or talk to them....
I've got this on a bootleg tape that I bought back in the early 90s. I'm glad you put it on youtube to help preserve this awesome performance. The raw power in these live Zeppelin performances is utterly thrilling!
Wow! Plant had some serious power in those vocal chords in 69'. Shame all the touring, smoking and age made it less so as years went on. Crazy that they start with this song without having Plant warmed up to sing so hard. (notice his voice cracks at 3:21). Regardless, this is the Hammer of the Gods.
Okay, I know this was well before Stairway to Heaven, but as Jimmy's plucking away at 1:22, waiting for the snare drum problem to be rectified, I hear what seems to be the embryo of StoH's opening notes...does anyone else hear that??
@LedPeplum Think he plays a bit of Davey Graham's "Anji" then does a bit of their opwn version of "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" both of which are based around an A minor shape - which is maybe where you're hearing the "Stairway" echoes.
Fantastic. Never heard this before. Incredible that this isn't on an album. Their side jams are better than most bands best song. Thank you for putting this up! I love how every member tears into their parts but still in total unison. The only other band I've seen do this was Soundgarden in their live Come Together journeys. They roll off into their own riffs and BAM! back on time with magical timing.
No they shouldnt. Led Zeppelin should leave their legacy alone and be happy with it. Plant understood this and we should be grateful to him for not wanting to tour with Led Zeppelin and to Page and Jones for having the class not to go on without him.
To be fair, this is an absolutely kickass song though and Page should release an album of all the unreleased bootlegs digitally remastered or something.
@1Bluesboy1 thats because its a garnet mimms cover, and spirit cover. of course that didnt stop them from releasing led zeppelin 1 haha. i wish i had the mp3 of this version, its, in my opinion, the best. thank you very much for uploading it. i work out to it its great :)
@samuelshepard - I grew up enjoying the British Invasion's covers of the old blues artists and then discovering all the great songs of the blues greats during the 1960s. I used to have the Garnet Mimms cd just from this Led Zep recording.
@1Bluesboy1 we do a cover of these covers to start off our live sets now. there is no way you can make this sound bad! check out our band 'pheta morgana' if you get a chance, i write all of the stuff and was VERY heavily influenced by jimmy page and almost only him. he's always fresh and never boring.
@samuelshepard ya this is my favorite probably to I wish they would come out with this song on a official cd....I swear I need to be in charge of all those live albums
@samuelshepard Thats what Im saying!!! They have all this amazing shit on and wont officially release it...im telling you if I was in charge i'd be making bank
it´s all about Jimmy Pages descision. So, as he officially released their 1970 gig in Royal Albert Hall on LZ DVD set, he didn´t take "Hearbreaker" into the set, cause of the recorders´ break down during the guitar solo. He couldn´t overdub that section. As I listened to that song the very first time, I astonishingly was blown away. I noticed the break down during the solo, nevertheless that song is pure Zeppelin on their best! But Page unfortunately didn´t take it on the release.
Just dug out my Zep boot discs. It's on a boot called 'Through The Years 1969'. This version is 16:59. I will work on getting it posted as I haven't seen this one on YouTube as yet.
On the other version I was refering to Bonham's drums are quite loud and stand out in the mix if that would give any clue as to what the date, lication may have been. Because as I say, I have it but the details aren't marked on it.
I do enjoy this version but there's another 15+ minute version that IMO rocks quite a bit harder. I think it may be an earlier recording. The boot disc I have doesn't list the date. Bonham is insane and all over the place wild on the version I'm talking about. Long Spirit influenced interludes, tons of feedback in sections etc. Very chaotic but listenable.
It was in Paris, in the early nineties, that I bought the bootleg with this version included. Among all 200 LZ bootlegs (yes, I am a fan indeed) this song and 'No Quarter' on the Destroyer bootleg are my favourites. This is the real thing!
I love this!! Always an extra-special treat to hear some zeppelin that i previously hadnt heard! The beginning reminds me of "Green Manalishi" from the Peter Green days of Fleetwood Mac. thanks!!
Wow!! 4-27-69. This puts them back in the Filmore West SF. Their 2nd US tour in 5 months and 6th time at the Filmore West. What was the exchange between the audience and Plant? What's amazing is how hard Plant could push his voice in the early days, it was as if he could do what ever he wanted. Pretty much night after night too, sometimes two shows a day. Thank you for posting this, who's tune is this anyway? lol Page almost starts in with Bouree by Bach, which there's a tape of.
It's an old Jerry Ragovoy / Bob Elgin (early '60's)tune made famous by soul and R&B singer Garnet Mimms in 1965. Garnet Mimms and the Enchanters had their biggest hit (1963) with the old Janis Joplin cover Cry Baby.
In 68 - 69, Plant (being only 20 - 21 yrs) was still developing both physiologically, and in his training(learning) to control his voice. Consequently his voice "screeched out" at times earlier on. By 71 - 72, he was at his PEAK ability in terms of the HIGHEST end of his range. Yea?
No doubt, Plant cannot be topped, what a set of pipes. I love Steve Marriotts voice too but THESE guys were from another planet. I read that these early concerts would go for hours cuz the audience wouldn't let them go! About Plant's screeches, he was leaving nothing on the stage and they actually fit perfectly for me. I'm so glad he left nothing in the tank cuz it's gone now and what he left behind will be listened to by every serious singer till the end of time. Led Zeppelin 4-Ever!
@AnthonyStJames ~ totally agree. i have no idea what happened, probably bad technique and physical abuse led to robert's voice going. plus he never left anything in the bag, it was balls out all the time.
